I have heard that Mudcat Cafe is a good place to find lyrics, for old time country songs. I hope you can help.

Uncle Dave's "Good Old Summer Time" is available on the 4 CD set "Uncle Dave Macon - Volume 2" (JSP7769). Its a nice parody.

So, are we looking for a good old song or for a parody? (I think that In the Good Old Summertime is corny enough on its own.)

Leeneia, the complete lyrics to that good old song, "In the Good Old Summer Time" were posted in thread 150414.

Corny? You'll never be a tootsie-wootsie if you decry those wonderful, sentimental, heartfelt lyrics.

Note- At the time the song was written (1902), summer time was two words. Important when searching for sheet music.

The above of no help if Uncle Dave was using different words.

Spotify doesn't play here, nor does Pandora. However, it is on Pandora which is available in the US, Oz and NZ. That should allow someone to see if UDM's version matches the original from 1902.

I just posted the lyrics from the 1926 and 1938 versions of this but, naturally, since I did not control-A control-C before hitting "submit," the message vanished into electronic limbo.

It's a mix of straight and parody. Key verse is the opener, same in both versions exc that in 1938 the cow is only NINE miles away:

In the good old summertime
It was on the Beeno [sic; B&O, probably] Line
Stuck my head out at the window
To kiss that baby of mine
The train it ran so quick and fast
I missed that baby of mine
I kissed a cow ten miles away
In the good old summertime.

Second verse in 1926 is "Good Old Summertime" as you would have heard it on Sing Along With Mitch in 1959, the verse everybody knows.

Second verse in 1938 is a little different

In the good old summertime
In the good old summertime
Strolling down that shady lane
With that baby of mine
Oh heart to heart and hand to hand
Life is a beautiful rhyme
Go walking together, talk to one another
In the good old summertime.

Third verse in 1926

In the good old summertime
Down Broad Street after nine
If you meet a girl dressed to kill
Oh that's my baby mine
But if she gives you the telegraph wink
That is a very good sign
That she'll be your tootsie-wootsie
In the good old summertime.

The 1938 version is somewhat different:

In the good old summertime
Down Broad Street after nine
If you meet a real pretty girl
Oh, that's my baby mine
But if she gives you a pleasant look
That's a very good sign
That she will be your tootsie-wootsie
In the good old summertime.

Both 1926 and 1938 repeat the second verse to conclude the song.

First version is UDM solo, recorded 8 Sept 1926 in New York, released on Vocalion 15441 and 5003. Second version is UDM, with Smoky Mountain Glenn on guitar (Glenn sings harmony on verse 2 only), recorded 24 Jan 1938 at Charlotte, SC, released on Bluebird B-7779 and Montgomery Ward M-7461.

There is a poem called "The Oriole," written in the 1850s. Nothing to do with the request, but here is one verse:

And thus she sings until her young have grown,

Needing no more their "hang down" home.

Ah, they don't write them like that any more.

Mike Yates, I swear I looked through the CD booklet song lists on all 8 JPS Dave Macon CDs until my eyes were bleary, and I didn't see that song listed. When you said it was there, I looked again, but I didn't find it until I had read the CD booklets several times.

Joe. I know just what you mean. JSP have also issued 2 5-volume sets of Carter Family material (ie 10 CDs in all)and I am constantly failing to find tracks which I known are there!!! Just getting old, I suspect.

...and isn't it a treat to have those JSP box sets, Mike? I ripped the Carter Family sets to MP3 files and reduced the ten CDs to two discs, which play quite nicely in my car.
