Song Collectors Conference - London, 26 April

15 Apr 14 - 05:05 AM (#3618914)
Subject: Folklore: Song Collectors Conference
From: GUEST,Song Collectors Collective

The Song Collectors Collective Conference is on April 26th in London. A one-day event of talks, presentations and performances covering the practicalities, ethics, histories and art of contemporary song collecting. A unique opportunity to explore the origins of folk song, learn about the conservation of oral culture and celebrate the gems on your doorstep and beyond!

There will also be presentations by the song collectors currently taking part in the ground-breaking Song Catchers initiative. This collaborative project between the SCC and SOAS has trained a team of people to record the songs of various religious and ethnic communities throughout London.

There will be lots of events throughout the day and a concert with all the invited musicians and singers at the end.

Hm? SOAS' music department is as close to World ethnological musical study on the lines adopted by Cecil Sharp as is to be found these days - they are, for example, a major sponsor of the Bagpipe Society. I think they may be pointing out that the broadening of English culture of the last 30 years should result in a similar broadening in definition of the heritage roots of the culture so we're no narrowly nationalist. It may be premature to declare it English, but even so, someone doing something is to be applauded surely?

With respect, Ray, I don't understand your objection. Since it is permitted to post here without being a member or using a consistent name (according to Max, the site owner) log-in is not required. Conferences and workshops as well as many kinds of gigs are welcomed by those of us looking for music and music scholarship. It appears this conference takes place in London, and involves music of multiple heritages- "The Song Collectors Collective celebrates the people who conserve rare oral culture within their communities in Britain, Ireland and beyond."http://songcollectorscollective.co.uk/about/

As for the original post, http://songcollectorscollective.co.uk/about/aims-objectives/, the aims for the Song Collectors group look good to me.

From the website:
"The aims of the Song Collectors Collective are to:

Meet Tradition Bearers including singers, tellers and musicians and to conserve the traditional oral culture alive in Britain, Ireland and beyond

Record the repertoires of songs, stories and lore of Tradition Bearers, with initial focus on the old traditional songs of the Gypsy and Traveler communities of Britain and Ireland

Share these recordings freely with as many people as possible to encourage appreciation of the Tradition Bearers and their repertoires and to help conserve traditional oral culture

Return copies of the recordings to the individuals, families and communities who have contributed

Provide an archive of these recordings as a resource for the public to use for personal enjoyment, education, social work, and performance

Empower a new generation of song collectors to meet, record, share, return, provide and empower others to ensure the future of Song Collecting and the conservation of traditional oral culture

The Song Collectors Collective is a united community of amateur collectors, editors, archivists, academics and enthusiasts all supporting and empowering each other to fulfil the aims of the group."

Have I missed something?

The only line in the OP that r padgett's post could refer to is:

"This collaborative project between the SCC and SOAS has trained a team of people to record the songs of various religious and ethnic communities throughout London."

I too am bemused as to what r.padgett was taking exception to. Please come back and clarify!

Anyway the conference took place six months ago. So it might be good for that web page to be updated with a brief report of the conference (apologies if it's lurking there and I've missed it) but that's a different matter. I can't complain, as I was there and didn't offer to write a report.

Wait...I wonder if there was a spam post that has since been deleted? That would explain Ray's objections. I'm told it's usually best to not comment on such since the moderators vacuum it out and said comments then make no sense.

I should have thought of that possibility...sorry!

Ray has confirmed that it was a spam post to which he was referring. Everyone can relax.

Thanks, Ray.

Actually, as I'm in the same School, do we need more input from there?

Yes please, Rahere. I'd like to know how that conference went in April.
