A one-day event of talks, presentations and performances covering the practicalities, ethics, histories and art of contemporary song collecting. A unique opportunity to explore the origins of folk song, learn about the conservation of oral culture and celebrate the gems on your doorstep and beyond! There will also be presentations by the song collectors currently taking part in the ground-breaking Song Catchers initiative. This collaborative project between the SCC and SOAS has trained a team of people to record the songs of various religious and ethnic communities throughout London. SOAS' music department is as close to World ethnological musical study on the lines adopted by Cecil Sharp as is to be found these days - they are, for example, a major sponsor of the Bagpipe Society. I think they may be pointing out that the broadening of English culture of the last 30 years should result in a similar broadening in definition of the heritage roots of the culture so we're no narrowly nationalist. It may be premature to declare it English, but even so, someone doing something is to be applauded surely? |

Since it is permitted to post here without being a member or using a consistent name (according to Max, the site owner) log-in is not required. Conferences and workshops as well as many kinds of gigs are welcomed by those of us looking for music and music scholarship. Anyway the conference took place six months ago. So it might be good for that web page to be updated with a brief report of the conference (apologies if it's lurking there and I've missed it) but that's a different matter. I can't complain, as I was there and didn't offer to write a report. |
