I was out of town for the weekend, got home late Monday, and spent yesterday recovering from too much FUN (musical, of course). So. Here 'tis. Fanfare, if you please! This Saturday, May 17, 2014, is our monthly Press Room Shanty, Forebitter, and Ballad Singaround from 3:30 until 7:30 PM. Seems to have some problems in the lyrics department. What gives? I thought for sure they'd be a trio by now...;-) Portsmouth Maritime Folk Festival will be September 27th and 28th this year. Concert lineup is Andy Kenna from Liverpool, London Julie, and a memorial that hasn't been planned yet for Tom and for Bob Webb. Also confirmed for the festival are John Roberts, Cliff Haslam, Dave Peloquin, as well as our usual local mainstays of the festival. Linn |

Pre-memorial day, beautiful-day tourists and UNH Commencement made parking fun. My voice was going and my throat hurt and I was hungry, but we had an absentee wait-person. I don't know if she asked anybody at the table if they wanted anything while I was there, and some folks walked up to the bar to order. Bartender got my tip. I was also freezing since they had the air on. I went outside to warm up around 5-something and just kept going. I have a severe lack of energy these days, anyway. Probably need to keep taking allergy pills for a bit. And learn some new songs. Dianne brought her young granddaughter, who has a lovely voice...and is not shy, which is great! |

18 May 14 - 03:11 PM (#3626879) Subject: RE: May Press Room (NH) Shanty Sing From: Bat Goddess It rained in the morning, but by mid day, the sun was out brightly, the sky was radiant blue, the temperature was comfortable and it was, I think, the first REALLY NICE weekend day after a long winter and delayed and half-hearted spring. Even the Press Room regulars who hang out around the bar weren't there...probably enjoying the weather outside. But Don Hale made it from way down south...in Massachusetts, and Jeri was there for awhile, and Hutch (Emery Hutchins), Charlie Ipcar and Judy Barrows from mid-coast Maine, Bill Lehrman and Carol Pierson from the Boston area, and Justine Donovan and Steve Smith came in later in the afternoon. Dianne Lavoie was in early with her granddaughter Annalie and stayed long enough to sing a few songs and Annalie made not only her Press Room debut, but it was the first time she'd sung solo in front of strangers (and, you'll have to admit, we're pretty strange...). Gail Didericksen and her sister came in to listen and stayed most of the session. By the way, Jeri, Lonny came in later and kept us from dying of thirst. We wrapped up about 15 minutes early when Lonny asked (for Tristan) if we could because there was overflow from a wedding party upstairs and they needed more table space. Went to see two ecology-based films last night at the Portsmouth library last night -- "Volunteer" (with discussion with the film maker after) and a short film on North Atlantic Right whales by a 16-year-old film maker. When I left the library it was foggy...with a salt tang. (Hey, it's Portsmouth.) So I decided to go for a ride along the Piscataqua to Newcastle. Nice foggy haloed lights at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard as I drove down the river. When I got to the Coast Guard station, I turned in and took the roads closest to the river, past the yacht club, back to Portsmouth. Lovely detour! And the fog was gone by the time I hit the traffic circle heading out of town. Linn |
