One of my band members keeps referring to Some of these Days I'll be Gone by Charlie Patton and Some of These Days as sung by Sophie Tucker (written by Shelton Brooks) as different versions of the same song. Different tune and different lyrics. So I'm wondering what you think. Tucker was born in 1887, Patton sometime between 1887 and 1891. I think Patton fits the 'songster' mode, and would have gathered songs from the larger community. This certainly was the case with Leadbelly who had a wide repertoire of popular songs. Best wishes, Thomas. |

I've never been solidly convinced that he had a lot of interest in what the words to his songs meant, and perhaps not even what they were. His strength was in the sound and the feeling, and there he was unsurpassed. |
