need to contact Ted Edwards for song permission

Hi, We are a band called Trimdon Grange Explosion, based in London. I was wondering if anyone could put us in touch with the folk singer Ted Edwards? We heard one of his beautiful songs Weeping & Wailing on a Gary & Vera Aspley record & would love to do a rendition of it but of course, wanted to ask his permission to do so. Here is some of our existing music: https://soundcloud.com/trimdongrange - It would be wonderful if anyone had any info to go about contacting him. Thanks!

Hi, Alison -

I added a few words to your thread title so it couldn't be thought of as an obituary. Hope you don't mind.

Here's a starting point, Alison. One of at least two Mudcat threads about Ted Edwards, the link following has an address for him. Whether it's still good I don't know.

Hi Alison,

I'll contact Ted tomorrow and ask him to look up this thread. I'm sure he'll be delighted that you want to record "Weepin' an' Wailin'" one of many fine songs that he has written.

Cheers

Nick

Thank you so much Nick! That's really good of you. It certainly is a fine song. And thanks Maeve for the links too.

Ted has been coming regularly to Wigan Folk Club for some time now. He was there Tuesday this week, and by coincidence, one of the songs he sang was "Weeping and Wailing". The address on the thread (link above) is still current, and I'm certain Ted will be delighted to be contacted about the song.

Hi
I was born and brought up in Lancashire within sight of Pendle but for 30 years have lived in Bedfordshire. I still call myself an exiled Lancastrian.
I am writing a piece of music for concert band called A Lancashire Suite and would like to include the tune of Old Pendle in it.
Would this be allowed please? I will put an acknowledgement if you could give me details.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Best regards
Sue Batten

Sue, there is contact information for Ted Edwards in this thread. It's his melody, so get in touch with him with your question :-)

But Old Pendle is not a Ted Edwards song :-S

Old Pendle. Music and some lyrics Brian Osborne. Original Lyrics Milton Allen (Brothers Milton and Allen Lambert).

As it is the music you need and Brian has, sadly, passed away I suppose you would need to contact his estate?

I was going by the following, Dave. My apologies if I'm mistaken.

No, it could be me, #. I am only going off internet research as well but I don't remember Ted ever singing it or it ever being introduced as a Ted Edwards song. Maybe Raggy could ask? If not, my mate Ged sings the song and is in regular contact with Ted. If not cleared up in a day or two I will ask him.

Cheers

Cheers back to you Dave. The internet is a boon and a disaster all in one. With copyright laws all over the place (Mark Twain complained about them over a hundred years ago when he said, ""Only one thing is impossible for God: To find any sense in any copyright law on the planet."), I sometimes wonder if Gilbert and Sullivan ever wrote anything :-)

I look forward to what you find out. Good luck to you.

Just spoke to someone and it looks like this will remain one of those folk mysteries. Doesn't help Sue I'm afraid so maybe she can just publish and be damned :-)

Sorry I can't help further.

One memory I will keep forever is standing chatting to Ted outside the Duke of York in Eccles. 4 or 5 of us, all bearded folkies, full of good beer, when a policeman approached us and asked if we had seen anything suspicious on the car park. We answered in the negative but the policeman pressed us further, as the miscreant he was seeking had been described as bearded. Ted, resplendent in Lancashire flat cap, clogs and full length Arab cape looked round at all of us, winked and asked the policeman if the informant had said anything about a cape. The policeman just shook his head and walked off.

Sue - don't let this stop you. The most important thing is to continue to sing the song.

I think we can agree that Brian Osborne set the words to the tune. The composer of the tune remains unresolved. It has been credited to both Ted Edwards and Brian Osborne.

However, the tune may well be derived from a traditional one. Take the action you think most appropriate.
