30 May 14 - 03:37 AM (#3629076) Subject: Best folk club From: GUEST,FloraG I know - no such thing as best - too subjective - but I thought we might post examples of good nights had in folk clubs which might help others when choosing what to attend. My opener. Faversham Kent Wedensday 8pm. Parking in the car park next to the co op - free after 6pm - and walk 100 yards to the club or arrive by train - about the same distance. The club used the upstairs room so no intrusive noise from the bar. Format - some guest nights and the rest singers. This week they had Mike Nicholson as guest. He is what I think of as a ' singers singer' so he attracted a good range of singers to join in with all and any bits of his better known songs. Floor singers were made welcome. There was a recorder, banjo, hardanger, guitar, and a range of song styles and singers. Downside - I think it would be difficult for mobility disabled as its up some stairs and the beer is a bit pricey. FloraG |

30 May 14 - 04:35 AM (#3629086) Subject: RE: Best folk club From: GUEST,big al whittle I don't go to many folk clubs that are upstairs unless i'm booked there. my wife and I like going places together and she's been disabled for years, she used to struggle with the stairs, bur now its too much. its a pity cos many of the old folk clubs in the golden age were up stairs in pubs - many fine folk clubs - the old crown in digbeth Birmingham, the jug of punch, the three barrels at ampersand, the co-op club in Nottingham....and so on... my favourite club was the Vernon Arms in Derby...wall to wall friends! |

Closely followed by The Wheatsheaf in Barnsley and Brown Cow in Mansfield. Lots of good ones inbetween back in the day. These days, I enjoy my local clubs (Epworth and Owston Ferry) when I can get, which isn't too often and a few others. I tend to play different venues when I do get to do a set, mainly arts festivals, charity gigs etc. My days of being pinned down with a band are long over. Singaround folk clubs are most prevalent where I live now, although I was brought up on the stage and give us a couple of songs places rather than pass round the room in turn. That said, I enjoy going to them. I just get a wee bit nostalgic for the old days and very different (to my thinking) folk clubs. Most of the "venue" clubs used to be upstairs rooms, although most singaround clubs tend to be in the bar areas in my experience. I suppose the more recent style is more accessible in general, and that is a good thing. |
