Subject: Lyr Req: lyrics with mushroom (edible) ???
From: Mr Red

the trad music forum on Yahoo has posed this question.
the DT come up with 4 or 5 but only one that relates to the edible kind (as opp to nuclear varieties).
eg http://mudcat.org/@displaysong.cfm?SongID=7673 (WEE SANDY WAUGH)

other than that one does anyone have info that I can relay to the trad forum?

suggestions found so far
Twa Brothers (Two little Boys) http://songcollectorscollective.co.uk/tradition-bearers/stanley-robertson/

and
Battle Hymn of the New Socialist Party--Leon Rosselson; (nuclear)
I Ain't Marchin Anymore--Phil Ochs;; (nuclear??)
Sun is Burning in the Sky--Ian Campbell;; (nuclear)
They're Rioting in Africa [The Merry Minuet]--Sheldon Harnick;; (nuclear)
The Irish Jubilee; (nuclear?)
Wee Sandy Waugh. (see above)

OK - over to the forum.
TIA

Engleburt Humperdink (classical composer) wrote a lovely song for Hansel and Gretl based on a folk tune. I often sing it at clubs - English translation:-

A little man is standing within the wood
He wears a purple cloak and a small black hood
Tell me tell me if you can
What's the name of this small man
In his purple cloak and his small black hood

This little man is silent and makes no sound
He stands with only one foot upon the ground
Tell me who this man can be
For he will not answer me
Standing there with one foot upon the ground

The Buddha died from eating dodgy mushrooms.

You'd have thought there was a Buddhist hymn that describes it but I can't find one.

A YouTube search for "morel song" will give you several relevant results.

I have discovered the Chanterelle Song from Paper Mario 64 and an unspeakable vocaloided J-pop song with a refrain about shiitake (google for them). I am not sure either would go down that well in a folk club or session.

There is a truffle growers association in Lorraine whose president, Alain Lieger, is also the director of a choral society. If anybody knows about French truffle songs he will.

[Please DON'T repost anything I write to Yahoo - provide a link so the suckers who use their service can come here to read it].

There is a song called "What kind of a noise annoys an oyster" but I think it is the fishy kind.

Subject: Lyr Add: GROW, LITTLE MUSHROOM, GROW (Mellor et al
From: Jim Dixon

From the sheet music at the National Library of Australia:

GROW, LITTLE MUSHROOM, GROW
Words and music by Tom Mellor, Alf. J. Lawrance and Harry Gifford, ©1906.
"Sung with great success by Miss Elsa Langley."

1. There once was a frog and he would a-wooing go,
With another little frog he knew;
And he happened to stray in a field one day
Where a wee little mushroom grew.
Said he, "What a nice cosy home you'd make,
Affording a shelter free;
And if it is right that you grow in the night,
I will bring my bride with me.

So—

CHORUS: Grow, grow, grow, little mushroom, grow.
Grow, grow; somebody wants you so.
I shall call again tomorrow morn, you'll see,
And if you've grown bigger you will just suit me,
So grow, grow, grow, little mushroom, grow!

2. That evening he told his sweetheart what he had found.
"It's a model little home," said he,
"For the comforts are that of a ground-floor flat
That will just hold two—perhaps three."
So they made all arrangements to go next day
And live in this home so cheap;
Then all through that night in a dream of delight,
He was murmuring in his sleep: CHORUS

3. Now early next morn came an urchin who had seen
This mushroom of minor size;
Then the frogs made a call, but indeed felt small,
For the youngster had claimed the prize.
As the frog searched about with his lady-love,
In disgust she remarked, "It's plain,
Your home, I declare, was a castle in the air,
So it's useless to explain." CHORUS

Subject: Lyr Add: GATHER IN THE MUSHROOMS (Benny Hill)
From: Jim Dixon

Found this on Spotify. It's on several albums, including "Benny Hill: The Ultimate Collection."

GATHER IN THE MUSHROOMS
As sung by Benny Hill, ©1961.

1. Now Lucy went down on a farm, tried to milk a cow.
Though she tried, she couldn't the hang of it somehow.
The farmer looked at Lucy and he murmured with a frown:
"Well, now, you just hang on tightly, gal, and she'll jump up and down."

CHORUS: Oh, gather in the mushrooms, put 'em in a pot,
Pop 'em in the oven, and serve 'em piping hot.

2. To make herself more beautiful, she thought she'd bathe in milk.
She said, "I'll have a bathful(?)" to her milkman, Jackie Wilke.
He said, "You want it pasteurized, before I pour it in?"
She said, "No, I'll be happy if it comes up to me chin."

3. The farmer courted Lucy one dark and stormy night.
She said, "You are too old for me because your hair is white."
He looked into her eyes and then he knew he'd have to tell 'er:
"There's snow upon the roof but there's a fire in the cellar."

4. She took him in the kitchen; she was his turtledove;
And then she started cooking dumplings on the stove.
She wore a low-cut dress; ooh! it was as green as clover.
He jumped with glee 'cause he could see her dumplings boiling over.

5. She said, "You give me half-a-crown and I will read your palm."
And then she saw his love-line went halfway up his arm.
So now she's changed her prices, although she's just as willing.
It's big fat men at two-pound-ten and little boys a shillin'.

"Man in the Woods" is a German. folk song. It was QUOTED by Mr. Humperdink, a German composer, in the opening scene of Act Two Hansel and Gretle (1893).

In a British 1955 songbook for elementary (6 year old) the illustration is of a plant commonly known as a Jack in the Pulpit. I do NOT believe it is about mushrooms.

Sincerely,
Gargoyle

I attended a British School for awhile.
