17 Jul 14 - 10:45 AM (#3642832) Subject: Advice for a sound system newbie From: Cool Beans I'm playing my first gig soon with my own sound system: a vocal mic, a guitar mic (no pickup), the usual... I've been practicing and I'm comfortable with it. I've noticed that some performers choose to position the guitar mic under the boom rather than above it. And there are different angles at which to aim the boom at the guitar. Are there sound (no pun) reasons for such choices or is it a matter of personal preference? |

I try to avoid aiming it directly at the sound hole because it 'mushes up' the guitar sound. You'll have to play around with that. Have a friend with a good ear for sound listen to various positions the mic is in and let you know what sounds best. Then let your friend play and you listen from various places in the room. That should let you know what will work best for you. |

If you are going to amplify, plug in. Takamines make a pleasant sound plugged in. Not like an acoustic guitar, but pleasant. |

18 Jul 14 - 08:34 AM (#3643105) Subject: RE: Advice for a sound system newbie From: treewind The only reason for having the mic under the boom instead of over it is if you're worried the screw thread might come loose - that way up it won't turn because it's already at the lowest point. Mic should be pointing directly at guitar. Most important is which part of guitar to point at - the sound hole is the wrong place because it will be too boomy unless you pull the mic back some distance from the instrument. 12th fret or where neck joins body is about the right place. Other parts of guitar body may work well too but you must experiment to determine if it's any better. About a foot away, not too close and not too far away, wherever you point it. If you haven't decided on a vocal mic yet, consider the Sennheiser e835. A Google search will point to lots of reports about how much better it is than the industry standard Shure SM58 at not significantly higher price. I've just bought two and they give a lovely crisp and clear vocal sound. |

By and large if you sing, the voice is more important because if you can't hear the lyrics you better be as good as Nic Jones "used to was on" the guitar. So get the ballance right - from the middle of the room perspective! |

First the SM57 is a better mic anyway (same capsule as the 58 but none of that pop-shield foam that cuts the HF, and less of a presence peak), also I've seen the e835 and others in its range suggested for use as an instrument mic. Sennheiser would like you to use the e614 as an instrument mic, but as it's a condenser you could hardly say it's equivalent to the SM57. |

Also how big the room - how many people are expected and how much room do you have to setup in and how much time to setup and clear down Are you the only artist or will there be others performing - makes a difference if you have to lug stuff in set up and get the balance right. I would go and do a few guest spots somewhere prior to gig to test gear out |
