In bringing it from Scotland to Hull he didn't realise the original beggar lass was from Hull. Actually it very likely originated in London in the 17thc as The Merchants Son of York and the Beggar Wench of Hull, but at least it mentions Hull. I read on Mudcat recently that Nic Jones recorded the original ballad. |

Jock learnt all of his material pretty much direct from Davy Stewart and Jimmy McBeath. He would have himself bowed to the masters. Yes, I have Davy's wonderful rendition on Songs of Seduction, side B, track 9. I adapted Davy's tune when I sang the original for our Yorkshire Garland website recordings at www.yorkshirefolksong.net Don't bother looking it up. It's not there for entertainment. |

This is one of the strophic songs from Die Schöne Müllerin, the cycle of Wilhelm Müller poems set by Franz Schubert. Think classical singers find the strophic songs easy to sing? They're doing it wrong, if they do....strophic songs, sung in or out of "diesen heiligen Hallen" of classical music training, require more attention, not less. In my perfect-rendition version, the Canadian-UK accompanist Gerald Moore at the piano, and the tenor is a Dane named Axel/Aksel ... darn, I don't know th computer code for this... Schiotz, kind of. That tenor has a heck of a story. He encouraged the resistance during World War II. Although he sang opera, he was best known for Oratorio and Lieder. Then he suffered mysterious health problems which resulted in the dire diagnosis of a brain tumor. In those primitive days, a brain tumor, located where his was, threatened the nerve which controls the muscles of the jaw and tongue and throat....all they could think to do, in order to save his life and get that tumor excised, was to sever the nerve. And so they did. That was the end of his public career, he spent the rest of his life teaching. And his jaw never did stop settling sideways below his face. That backstory makes the sound of his singing that much more haunting. This is an artist who pays attention to every syllable of every word, never mind distinct strophes. Two tracks by Jock Manuel ~ Lang A~Growing, and The Road to Dundee, these are real traditional songs song with heart feeling and guts ~ and yea maybe not "pretty pretty" keys but my god the man put his life experiences into the performances ~ non of your Jon Boden about these Ray I like Jon Boden btw but Folk songs are for folk singers and beware any cross over to country music and pop music |
