21 Jul 14 - 07:06 AM (#3643812) Subject: RE: Singing at Whitby 2014 From: GUEST,Fred McCormick I'd be inclined to avoid the marathon singaround in the Rifle Club, if I recall correctly. The few times I've been in there, I've heard some appalling rubbish. The other official singarounds are usually much better, especially if they're led by a guest who knows what he or she is doing. Venues last year included the Dolphin, just by the bridge and a pub whose name I've forgotten, which is over the far end of the bridge and turn right. There are also various unofficial sessions, the quality of which can vary enormously. In particular, there's a pub opposite the bus station, which has some sort of trendy name; The Tap and Spile or the rat and parrot, I think. Sorry to be so vague, but the brain cells have all retired to the old folks home and refuse to work anymore. |

21 Jul 14 - 10:52 AM (#3643876) Subject: RE: Singing at Whitby 2014 From: r.padgett Yep there are a number of official and unofficial singing sessions, noted above ~ official sessions and others can take up to 2hrs to get a song no matter who you are!! The Star is I believe back as singing venue after many years, also depends on the time of day and inclinations of singers and musicians to have a session! Black Horse, Middle Earth, Elsinore, Little Angel, indeed many of the pubs welcome people to play, sing etc Ray |
21 Jul 14 - 11:23 AM (#3643893) Subject: RE: Singing at Whitby 2014 From: GUEST,Joe Nicholson Fred if the singing in The marathon Singaround is rubbish then maybe you can explain why there has been a full house almost every night for the last twentyieght years. Joe N. |

21 Jul 14 - 12:11 PM (#3643904) Subject: RE: Singing at Whitby 2014 From: GUEST,Peter Maybe there are that many crap singers who want to perform or maybe Fred just went on a bad night. Singarounds aren't a place to go if you want to be entertained by good singers, the festival schedules concerts for that purpose. |
21 Jul 14 - 04:28 PM (#3643959) Subject: RE: Singing at Whitby 2014 From: Raggytash A little thread drift: The annual Whitby to Glaisdale Folk Express will again be running this year. Please see the separate thread. Cheers |
22 Jul 14 - 06:18 AM (#3644097) Subject: RE: Singing at Whitby 2014 From: JHW For some years now I've headed first for the Station where I've found excellent singing and enthusiasm. Last year though it was a bit intermittent. Jude has every right to a rest after years of commitment while she lived in Whitby but I wonder what the form will be this year? |
22 Jul 14 - 08:26 AM (#3644148) Subject: RE: Singing at Whitby 2014 From: GUEST Not so sure about the Endeavour. Maggie and I have usually run singing sessions in there during Folk Week, but it's shut at the moment. |

22 Jul 14 - 09:31 AM (#3644173) Subject: RE: Singing at Whitby 2014 From: GUEST,Raggytash It was open last night, it shut one day as the new landlord moved in. |
22 Jul 14 - 10:29 AM (#3644183) Subject: RE: Singing at Whitby 2014 From: Joe Nicholson Since first replying to Fred McCormicks post about the singing in the Rifle Club, I have had some further thoughts.Ever since mo and I started to run the singarounds we have tried to make it all-inclusive,friendly,non-judgemental and non-selective. we have for instance always encouraged families with children. When we have said anything goes we have meant it. We do get as well as singinging poetry stories and some strange instuments (and even some stranger people) Many people have sung or performed for the very fist time but have gone on to be fine performers. Folk come to Whitby Folk Week to see and to hear fine performances of Music and dance of which there are plenty, others to take part and to learn, some do both. I think that this is the ethos of Whitby Folk Week and I would like to think that Mo and I play our part. So if you come to The Marathon Singaround you will not find wall to wall perfection you will hear some damn good singing, warmth friendliness and a bit of fun. Oh and by the way come early 8 oclock start. Best Wishes Joe Nicholson |
22 Jul 14 - 11:53 AM (#3644226) Subject: RE: Singing at Whitby 2014 From: Paul Davenport I can't believe Fred said that! I have made the point in several places that the Marathon Singaround has, of all of Whitby's events probably done more for the development of traditional singing than most people realise. I can think of a number of current professional performers who first 'dared' to sing in public at Mo and Joe's event. By the way Fred, I've also heard some appalling rubbish at Whitby , but very little of that was in the Marathon Singaround! |
22 Jul 14 - 01:16 PM (#3644244) Subject: RE: Singing at Whitby 2014 From: selby What get's me is all the experts that freeload on the fringe and do not contribute to WHITBY FOLK WEEK have an opinion and dam the main festival without forethought. REMEMBER Without the festival there is no fringe. Keith |
22 Jul 14 - 01:19 PM (#3644246) Subject: RE: Singing at Whitby 2014 From: GUEST,Raggytash Joe, ignore the guy, don't raise to an ill considered barb. You and Mo have done more to encourage people than the rest of us can only dream of. |
22 Jul 14 - 01:26 PM (#3644250) Subject: RE: Singing at Whitby 2014 From: nutty There are many "names" at Whitby deserving of their position as headliners. There are many more behind the scene workers who don't get the credit they deserve. I believe Joe and Mo are foremost of these. It's very easy for Fred and others to mock but these two, with their total committment to folk, are the ones who help to keep festivals alive. Whitby isn't the only festival where they unstintingly give of their time. I think it's time that festival organisers got together and gave them free passes to all British folk festival - they really do deserve it. |
22 Jul 14 - 02:53 PM (#3644275) Subject: RE: Singing at Whitby 2014 From: r.padgett I would echo all said by and for Jo and Mo! Fred has been around a long time and I know he sang in the Dolphin last year day time new venue, took 2hrs to get round for one song (if your face fits) as the standard is high! The Star is I believe back as avenue and of course we did use to have the Station during the day as well as the night time (back and side rooms still used!) Ray |
22 Jul 14 - 07:02 PM (#3644371) Subject: RE: Singing at Whitby 2014 From: GeoffLawes I am surprised that so far nobody has mentioned the Ballad Session held between 1pm and 3pm at the Conservative Club. It is an official part of the festival programme and is led by a number of booked singers who usually invite contributions from the floor. I have heard some very fine singing there over the years. |
22 Jul 14 - 08:46 PM (#3644394) Subject: RE: Singing at Whitby 2014 From: GUEST,Guest Surely Geoff, nice man that you are, should know that the ballad session is really aimed at the excellent guests and not as a general singaround. It was originally Peter Bellamy's idea, taken up by Malcolm Storey - because he listened - and was aimed at setting a standard for others to attain to. Because in recent years this has not been pointed out either by inference to the guests or to the general public ther has been a tendency for it to be devalued. |
23 Jul 14 - 03:33 AM (#3644433) Subject: RE: Singing at Whitby 2014 From: r.padgett a session for audience the Ballad session Geoff ~ booked guests singing and a cost with little time for others; one might say but I certainly would not Ray |
