Whitby: Glaisdale Sunday

21 Jul 14 - 04:24 PM (#3643956)
Subject: Whitby: Glaisdale Sunday
From: Raggytash

The annual Whitby to Glaisdale Folk Express will again be running this year.

On Sunday 17th August to train leaves Whitby at 12.46 arriving in Glaisdale at 13.10 for a quick trot up the hill to the Arncliffe Arms where we will spend the afternoon with song and in drink until we catch the return train to Whitby at 17.24 arriving back in Whitby just in time for early evening "cocktails" at 17.55.

As usual we will be rattling the can for the Runswick Bay Rescue Boat. The afternoon is mainly but not entirely singing, if anyone wants to play tunes that fine by us!

Times again:

Leave Whitby            12.14
Arrive Glaisdale       13.08
Leave Glaisdale         17.24
Arrive Whitby          17.55

Hi,

Will there be singing on the train as well?

Hm, train songs?

- City of New Orleans
- Freight Train
- This Train !
- Casey Jones
- Rock Island Line
- Blue Water Line

Not quite enough to fill 2x24 minutes of travel. And there might have to be someone to lead the song. (Hm, there's a song about that too, but I can't recall what it's called.)

So, what will you do with the drunken sailor on the train?

Bye

instrumental interludes:

The Orange Blossom Special
The Flying Scotsman
7.40 (klezmer tune, it was the morning train to Odessa for Jewish workers)

If it's as good as in previous years there will be plenty to do on the train.
Heres a few more
Leaving of Nancy
Union Train
Paddy Works on the Railway
and one to really cheer you up, The Dying Engineer

Well, meant to do this two weeks ago, but the session at Glaisdale was idyllic!

Good company, excellent musicians and some fine singers added together with lovely weather and some decent ale!!
Thank you to the organisers and I'll be doing it again next year.

Glad you enjoyed the afternoon Sapper, it's always an enjoyable time. Away from the throng in Whitby, good singing and playing, good pub, good beer, good food and great people.

Is the Glaisdale Sunday going ahead this year?

Strange to me that people have only been at a major festival one day and yet seem to want to do something else on the second day?!

Guest, we started this several years ago when Regatta and Folk Week clashed. The pubs over the regatta were packed with a good percentage of people did not want to listen to folkies so a group of us decamped for the Sunday. It has grown from there. The pub we go to welcomes us, the room is almost entirely folkies and the singers and players can do their stuff with like minded people. This session has now become a successful part of the fringe.

Thanks Raggytash for organising this again. I think it starts the fringe folk week off in a very civilised manner and is highly recommended but you do need your running shoes to get up that hill and nab a seat! Does the train still leave Whitby at 12.46?

Some confusion here Andiliqueur. The Esk Valley Railway site says 12.46. National Rail says 13.03. Probably best to get there early just in case.

I'm getting confused (as happens quite often these day)

Nick , I was talking to you on the 16th August 2015 at Saltburn saying I will try .....

I appreciate many of the posts above go back to 2014.

Should we be talking about Sunday 23rd August 2015 ??

Hi Pete

Yes the Glaisdale train is this Sunday 23rd August 2015.

The train leaves at ????? either 12.46 or 13.03. I've tried to phone Esk Valley Railway who's website says 12.46 they have not returned my messages. So I'll be at the station at 12.40 just in case.
