I think the practice scrimmages with other clubs is a great idea but a buddy of mine says no because players are not allowed full contact. While I know there is always gonna be the possibility of some asshole deciding to lay one an opponent and thereby throw a wrench into the works, I still think it's a good thing. The Pats have been doing it for a while. Not sure, but this may be the first time for Washington. Any thoughts?

when one team drops the ball while attacking there are 20 minutes of adverts (probably for guns and hanging and supplying arms to tyrants etc)then all the players on both sides run off to be replaced by 2 new teams. have i got this right? and if your team's new owner isn't so keen on - say - detroit he (or she) could move it to seattle . (what about the fans? -well of course, it's capitalism - they mean fuc***ll) and though no other sane country plays this game, the winners of this cup competition get to call themselves world series winners. or something. ridiculous 'sport' for girls

Pre-season play. No worries.

The Cubbies will take it all.

They'll pulverize the Pats, flog the dolphins, jack the Jaguars, clamp on the Cowboys, beat the Browns, slam the Seahawks, badly bruise the Blackhawks, and badly frighten the Maple Leafs.

Just you wait! They'll have NO losses this football season! The Superbowel is already theirs, and so is the Americas Cup! They're going to wearing those green jackets and yellow shirts! You'll see!

"...in their ivy covered burial ground."
It's sad to witness the the toll that World Series deprivation can take on a body.

The Washington Calluswhateveryouwanttojustgiveusourlandbacks gave the Pats a good thumping last night though I admit I didn't recognize any of the names on the Pats' side of the box score.

the 'Superbowel' is already theirs. shame, i would quite like one. i wouldn't really want to criticise anyone else's harmless interests but don't some of the aspects of the way the game is organised not spoil your enjoyment a bit? here in the uk - well, the english premier league (football)- is increasingly priced out of the reach of all but the wealthiest fans and the whole thing has become a money driven marketing exercise. overpaid players have no loyalty to their club while the fans' loyalty is exploited at every business opportunity. i still love the sport and particularly at lower league levels but something culturally very valuable is being lost

I no longer watch any American football, except for UCLA games (when not on Pac-12 Network, which is unavailable to me); gotta be true to your school even 50+ years away. There are several reasons:
1) I'm not sure there really is a flesh and blood human being under all the padding and behind the masks.
2) TV has taken over the game. Way to many commercials. Inappropriate time outs.
3) The game has been taken away from the officials on the field. Too many stoppages. Destroys the flow of the game. I would rather an occasional incorrect call than checking disputed plays frame by frame.
4) Reasons 2 (especially) & 3 also apply to college basketball--I have no opinion about NBA, as I have not watched a game in about 30 years. The last game I attended was San Diego Clippers at the now old Sports Arena.

Fair enough jotsc, but I am always baffled by people coming on the NFL threads to say they are not interest in the NFL. Maybe we should have a thread about that?

Gnu, j-boy, Mudcat Canadians. I was excited when Gettleman took over as general manager of the Carolina, not in small part, because I read that he was an expert in scouting the CFL. The Panther's current roster includes not one, but 2 big Canadian Lineman who were first round draft picks in the CFL. Linden Gaydosh is a defensive lineman, on a team with a number of great defensive lineman, I'll be looking to see if he graduates past the practice.

David Foucault is a very exciting player, with his size, 6'8", 305 speed and skill, Carolina is hoping to develop him to fill the very large and important shoes of all-pro Jordan Gross and protect Cam Newton's blind side. I will be watching him with great interest.

Sorry CFL, but these two lads are going to make it more fun for me to watch the Panthers!!

Well ,jts, I guess I'm venting because I used to really enjoy sports. e
Electronics and big bucks, which I think is the reason for taking he game away away from humans has turned me off of sports. Whilst you may not agree with my analysis, I think it a valid observation to share.

JotSC, I agree with points 2 and 3. For me the game has become almost unwatchable due to the ads and replays. I mostly just view Washington's games nowadays and tie flies or pick a couple of tunes during the breaks or do chores (when forced to).

Jimmy Garoppolo starts for the Pats (at Giants) Thursday night. He's a tad on the small size for QBs these days at 6'2". Looking forward to see what he can do as he becomes more comfortable playin with big boy pads on.

Wes Welker suspended

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
eNGLeWOOD, COLO. • The Denver Broncos will be without Wes Welker for the first four games of the season after the NFL said the receiver violated the league's performance-enhancing drug policy.
Normally, the league announces such violations on Monday. News of Welker's ban didn't come down until late Tuesday, after the league offices had closed and the Broncos had already finished drawing up blueprints for their opener against Indianapolis, undoubtedly with Welker playing a prominent role.
ESPN first reported Welker's suspension, saying the violation had to do with amphetamines.
Welker told the Denver Post in an email that he was"as shocked as everyone at today's news."
He noted he's meticulous about what he puts in his body and would "never knowingly take a substance to    gain a competitive advantage in any way."
The 11th-year pro who's been the NFL's top slot receiver over the last decade added that he never concerned himself with the league's drug rules but now realizes those policies "are clearly flawed."
While it takes multiple violations of the league's substance-abuse policies to trigger a suspension, a four-game ban is issued for a single violation of the NFL's ban on performance-enhancing substances.
Welker's suspension will cost him roughly $706,000 in base salary.
Welker played a key role in the two greatest statistical offences in NFL history: the 2007 New England Patriots and last year's Broncos.
