It's absolutely not the case that I was trying to "undermine the session" - my original comment was purely regarding the expensive nature of the qualification for competition entry. Just because someone is able to afford the high entry fee, it does not follow, let alone guarantee, that they will possess the expected "high level of singing"... It has been said that some poor (read less well-heeled, or unwaged or penniless) folk may be "better" singers - that they may sing with more passion, of the lived-in experience of the trials and hardships of life - but let's not get into debate, that's for another thread. Betsy - you're absolutely right. The anonymous Guest should be ignored unless they can provide a good reason for being so - and in any case, the term "best" is both relative and (especially in competition terms) somewhat artificial. All that said, I look forward to coming to Saltburn again and catching up with genuine good folks like Ray and Glen. Cheers! |

So spread around hard to say whether numbers were up or down. Festival goers mostly 65 plus, so I dont know how younger people might be encouraged, to see a festival in the future. Only six tickets sold at door for the ceilidh, so good job the dance teams were there! The singarounds were good in the conservative club. Heard lots of songs I had not heard since the seventies. Wonder how many inhabitants of sal5burn attend the festival. First festival this year that does not run a feedback survey, or did I miss it? |

The festival (for me) was as friendly and enjoyable as ever but I have to admit that there was a shortage of young people but that is a universal problem that has been discussed many times in Mudcat Threads. Having said that - the young people who did attend both as guests and punters were enthusiastic and talented as shown by the young lady (Bethany) who won the Fred Jordan Memorial Trophy. |

I was asked (I was in costume) what was happening behind the door of the Cons Club room. By I'd guess a folkie and by I'd guess someone local. Without a programme in my cossy I'd no idea. I'd already thought of suggesting to John that rooms with things happening should have posters outside saying what and when is happening (and if its Free!) Can't say whether thay would bring in non-believers or turn them away. |

The town itself was as welcoming as the festival with good shops and cafes. Biggest disappointment was that we decided to leave early on Sunday because of the weather so missed quite a few acts. We are already planning our next visit |

Apart from the great performers we expect to do the biz (and they did ), the Young 'uns were excellent, as was Roy Bailey. Amy's singing (hope I've spelt her name correctly), and Shona's fiddle playing in Real Time plus the lads were tremendous, but of the performers I hadn't seen or heard of before ,who blew me away was the guitar-pLaying of Brian Willoughby as he accompanied the talented Catherine Craig. Guitar players amongst you have got to give this guy a listen. Great Weekend - shit weather on Sunday (but anyone in Britain could have said THAT ) at least we were all in good venues / buildings and as some Dutch People said to me on Sunday - 20 €uros (15 quid) for a 6 hour Concert of this quality of performer(s)is fantastic - and it was.
