Anyone know if there are any campsites nearby other than the festival site?

Undermine the underminer?

"Fred" has been won by some extremely good entrants some who have gone on to guest at Sff and other festivals ~ Angela of Broadband won 2 years ago and subsequently guested at the festival! though this not guaranteed a Fred and £100 is and a high level of singing is of course expected, even if others, who should know better wish to undermine the session!

Subject: RE: Saltburn folk festival 2014
From: MoorleyMan

Do I read you right, Ray?
It's absolutely not the case that I was trying to "undermine the session" - my original comment was purely regarding the expensive nature of the qualification for competition entry.
Just because someone is able to afford the high entry fee, it does not follow, let alone guarantee, that they will possess the expected "high level of singing"...
It has been said that some poor (read less well-heeled, or unwaged or penniless) folk may be "better" singers - that they may sing with more passion, of the lived-in experience of the trials and hardships of life - but let's not get into debate, that's for another thread.

Betsy - you're absolutely right. The anonymous Guest should be ignored unless they can provide a good reason for being so - and in any case, the term "best" is both relative and (especially in competition terms) somewhat artificial.

All that said, I look forward to coming to Saltburn again and catching up with genuine good folks like Ray and Glen. Cheers!

Thank you David, Stewards also get the opportunity to enter as usual of course with John Taylor's permission

The event is down as a Big Sing with the Fred Jordan competition and all singers are welcome of course even if they cannot qualify to enter, the rules also say that the spirit of the event is of friendship and the furtherance of folk song in particular in the tracks of Fred Jordan a special down to earth farm labourer

Judges decision is final

But never mind calling it the "rules" - the spirit of all folk events is of friendship and the furtherance of folk song, right?

This has got me picturing Fred, the man himself, hands clasped, singing with twinkle of a smile; and then that reminds me of Willie Scott always with a lilt and a twinkle.
So a tip to entrants (and would be entrants) sing with a twinkle.

Kindly leave the stage and take your trollist comments somewhere else, you do not belong here on a civilised forum.

Thanks for the compering Ray. Enjoyed the festival spread around an old fashioned seaside town. So spread around hard to say whether numbers were up or down. Festival goers mostly 65 plus, so I dont know how younger people might be encouraged, to see a festival in the future. Only six tickets sold at door for the ceilidh, so good job the dance teams were there! The singarounds were good in the conservative club. Heard lots of songs I had not heard since the seventies. Wonder how many inhabitants of sal5burn attend the festival. First festival this year that does not run a feedback survey, or did I miss it?

I'm sure the weather reports and the subsequent rain did put a lot of people off attending which was a pity. The festival (for me) was as friendly and enjoyable as ever but I have to admit that there was a shortage of young people but that is a universal problem that has been discussed many times in Mudcat Threads. Having said that - the young people who did attend both as guests and punters were enthusiastic and talented as shown by the young lady (Bethany) who won the Fred Jordan Memorial Trophy.

'Wonder how many inhabitants of saltburn attend the festival?'
I was asked (I was in costume) what was happening behind the door of the Cons Club room. By I'd guess a folkie and by I'd guess someone local. Without a programme in my cossy I'd no idea.
I'd already thought of suggesting to John that rooms with things happening should have posters outside saying what and when is happening (and if its Free!) Can't say whether thay would bring in non-believers or turn them away.

Ian & I had a really good weekend in Saltburn so many thanks to the organisers and those kind folk running the sessions we joined in. The town itself was as welcoming as the festival with good shops and cafes. Biggest disappointment was that we decided to leave early on Sunday because of the weather so missed quite a few acts. We are already planning our next visit

Saw some sensational performances, and, I know it's sort of wrong to individualise, however I'll try to tell you about what I saw .....
Apart from the great performers we expect to do the biz (and they did ), the Young 'uns were excellent, as was Roy Bailey.
Amy's singing (hope I've spelt her name correctly), and Shona's fiddle playing in Real Time plus the lads were tremendous, but of the performers I hadn't seen or heard of before ,who blew me away was the guitar-pLaying of Brian Willoughby as he accompanied the talented Catherine Craig. Guitar players amongst you have got to give this guy a listen.
Great Weekend - shit weather on Sunday (but anyone in Britain could have said THAT ) at least we were all in good venues / buildings and as some Dutch People said to me on Sunday - 20 €uros (15 quid) for a 6 hour Concert of this quality of performer(s)is fantastic - and it was.
Great time...
Cheers Betsy

I met the chwrming Dutch people too, who only come to Saltburn festival every year. They reminded me of the Austrian people I met at Warwick who drive from Austria every year just for that one festival. Its a long way in a w campervan!

I also met the Dutch couple who were shocked at the poor attendance at the Free Concert late Saturday Afternoon. Do people think that if something is free it must be second class. This was definitely not the case.

Another wonderful Saltburn Festival - thank you to all the organisers, MCs, stewards etc who work so hard to make this the great event that it is.

Met the charming Dutch couple too and many, many others - such a lovely friendly festival.

If you are reading this thread and already thinking which festivals to attend next year - don't hesitate to book this one.

I missed many of acts again, missed Vin Garbutt totally

Fred Jordan Competition winner was Bethany (Beth) Aveyard ~ 20yo from Morley, Leeds who sang Morley Main disaster after being presented with a Graham Ibbeson sculptured trophy of Fred Jordan in bronze resin and her prize money

Trophy presented by Roy Bailey, Beth then sang the song in the main Spa concert room

Thanks to my co~host Glen Osborne and all entrants, should be there god willing in 2015 watch for venue!

I hope that isn't a typo and the song isn't a personal attack on one of the contributors to this thread.

Perhaps you could take up singing blues songs, David, and you could call yourself MoorleyMain? It has a good ole deep south blues sort of twang to it.

I woke up this morning
Dubious assertions going round my thread

I fail to understand what the statement you quote above has got to do with me, Nick.

I neither made the comment you quoted (it was actually Padgett, if you read it properly) regarding the competition winner, nor have I indulged in any personal attack on any of the contributors, so why on earth are you bringing my name into this discussion? It is totally irrelevant, and you know that.

I have no axe to grind with you, so just cut the constant bad jibes now please. It's time you stopped slinging the mud; you need to grow up and rise above this needless asinine name-calling.

Chill out David.

It amused me that the song title that won was almost like your Mudcat name (MoorleyMan - Morley Main. There is a similarity). It happened to coincide with a certain amount of comment in the thread from yourself and also the cowardly unnamed guest (who is not me in case you think it is - I say things to people directly if I want to).

It amused me because I like words and puns. And it was sitting there and tempted me.

If you feel offended then accept my apologies. But perhaps try and cultivate a sense of humour.

The following however is unnecessary, uncalled for and based on god knows what -

"I have no axe to grind with you, so just cut the constant bad jibes now please. It's time you stopped slinging the mud; you need to grow up and rise above this needless asinine name-calling. "

I have not got the slightest clue what you are talking about as I don't sling mud at you. I remember being directly critical of you (though I think via PM I don't think it was in public) when you were pretending to be other people to self promote yourself which I thought was cheap. But that is way in the past and you put your hand up to that one that you had been a little silly.

You are a very enthusiastic singer. While it is not my cup of tea I'm all for people being enthusiastic about what they do. I don't personally have any issues with you so no need to suggest I have.
