MH's show is now a regular for me - and he has all his songs/artists on a play list so it's easy to track things down. Well done to Mike! |

Although, paradoxically perhaps, I do prefer Mark Radcliffe's BBC show to his. Personally, I think the best folk UK folk show is BBC Merseyside's Folkscene. They have Emily Portman presenting it once a fortnight, and the music she plays is closest to my taste (she keeps the middle-of-the-road fluff to a minimum and plays people like Mary Hampton and Alasdair Roberts and Cath & Phil Tyler). When Portman's not presenting, they have Stan Ambrose, who presents 'at at distance',as it were, generally inviting guests to share their musical experiences. |

06 Aug 14 - 07:36 AM (#3648763) Subject: RE: Mike Harding (UK) Folk Show From: GUEST,Ed Dave, do you have any evidence that the BBC told Mike what to play? I know, having spoken to him, that Bob Harris working for the same production company (Smooth Operations) has carte blanche in choosing what songs he plays. Not sure why it should have been different for Mike Harding. Besides, looking at his recent playlists, I can't see too much difference to the type of fare that he used to play on Radio 2. |

06 Aug 14 - 10:30 AM (#3648805) Subject: RE: Mike Harding (UK) Folk Show From: Dave Hanson Ed, Mikes programme on BBC Radio 2 had to cover everything from folk, blues, jazz, country & western, pop, bluegrass, rock and roll and everything in between, whereas Bob Harris only played country, jazz programmes only play jazz and classical music gets it's own feckin channel ffs. NONE of them played any folk music. I've never heard an explanation for this, on his internet show Mike plays 99% folk music, because it's up to HIM, and 100% of it is good stuff. Dave H |

I listened to a couple from the archive and it is more to my taste than his R2 programme was. While listening I wrote a bookmarklet to play it without Flash on my Android: if anybody wants it it's here: https://gist.github.com/revad/a232062e90fa05784786 Works on iPad too. +1 on Merseyside's Folkscene. I like the variety of presenters. Mike's R2 programme used to have guest presenters - I remember John Kirkpatrick doing a couple - and it was a pleasant change. Change of vocabulary, too ;) |
