05 Aug 14 - 06:19 PM (#3648626) Subject: Tech: Parking at Whitby From: GUEST,Guest This one deserves a thread all on its own. The new system is up and working well according to the Council. The locals don't understand it. The Tourist Information don't understand it. The Park and Ride finishes at 6:00pm and there is no overnight parking. There is a local bylaw which makes it an offence to sleep in vehicles overnight anywhere on public roads in Whitby. You can though sleep during the day! Don't forget you read it first on Mudcat. |

05 Aug 14 - 06:58 PM (#3648640) Subject: RE: Tech: Parking at Whitby From: GUEST,Peter "There is a local bylaw which makes it an offence to sleep in vehicles overnight anywhere on public roads in Whitby" I thought there always was, have they actually started enforcing it? The scheme is a little more complicated than in most towns but isn't difficult to understand. The only difference from any other CPZ scheme that I have seen is the need to get a card to allow you to use the short stay spaces. If you have booked accomodation in the CPZ your landlord should be able to provide a visitor parking pass. |

05 Aug 14 - 07:03 PM (#3648644) Subject: RE: Tech: Parking at Whitby From: GUEST,Guest I rang Whitby Tourist Office today to buy a weekly parking ticket for Folk Festival Week which is in ten days time and they said they were unable to send me one in time! I have previously had no problem and have purchased a weekly permit for about £25 and parked opposite the Endeavour without much trouble but you do have to sit and wait for an available space but never waited more than ten minutes. Prices are now £6 per day (no weekly permit) so I guess I will have to keep going backwards and forward to the car each day to put another ticket on the car! As we are staying in a holiday cottage just of the pedestrian precinct shouldn't be too much trouble but the other system seemed easier. I appreciate it must be really difficult for the residents in a seaside town that sees an influx of tourists (I live in Sidmouth so should know!) but there are surely ways to make it easier for the holiday maker who after all put a lot of money in to the local economy. There ...... rant over, it certainly won't spoil my enjoyment of the week! |

06 Aug 14 - 05:38 AM (#3648736) Subject: RE: Tech: Parking at Whitby From: GUEST,Peter "Local inhabitants are just as irked by the parking regulations. " It is most unusual to find a community pleased when a CPZ is introduced although GUEST:guest its talking about car park charges rather than the new on-street arrangements. There seems to be an anomaly in the scheme, by my reading of the rules a guest house can get permits for customers' cars to be parked on-street which would only cost a pound for a week while the OP has to pay full rate in a car park as he is in self catering. Is Spring Vale still free of yellow lines? Its outside the new CPZ and always seemed to attract a lot of long term parking during the fetival in previous years. |
06 Aug 14 - 06:33 AM (#3648744) Subject: RE: Tech: Parking at Whitby From: GUEST,Fred McCormick It certainly won't be a case of Scarborough being jealous of Whitby. Parking regulations are supposed to be brought in to control parking, congestion etc. Unfortunately, local councils tend to see them as a revenue raiser and a means of keeping council taxes down. |

You can get a seven day ticket for the following car parks: Whitby: West Cliff, Church Street, Marina Back, Abbey Headland, Pavilion Drive and Pavilion Top. They are £6 per day but you don't need to keep buying new tickets. If guest said "Endeavour" to the tourist office they may have thought he meant Endeavour Warf which has a 24 hour limit rather than Church Street. |

The original plan involved several distinct areas and,if you couldn't find a bit of free road in the area where your house was then you weren't allowed to park in another area. I never did find out where you were supposed to go. We were promised a Resident's Parking Scheme, just like they have in Scarborough, where,I was informed by a SBC official "It works really well".Ho! Ho! We hatched a plan in the Black Horse last week to charter a Ro/Ro ferry and moor up in the Harbour to provide town centre parking for Folk Week, but I dont think anything came of it!!!! 06 Aug 14 - 03:27 PM (#3648877) Subject: RE: Tech: Parking at Whitby From: MoorleyMan Roger - spot on. Guest -- you're totally wrong there. As a matter of fact, I was over in Whitby only a few weeks ago, and was observing the new restrictions (which came in stages between January and the spring) at first hand (after having consulted various websites and made enquiries of several "authorities" beforehand). The various maps on the Internet are of differing configurations, and some information sources contradict each other. And as for the new "scratchcard" scheme, well that would put Kafka to shame. Re Folk Week itself, I last visited Folk Week for a day trip only, the year before last and the year before. I was always happy to dart about between venues, until the year when I got stranded on the "wrong" side of the swing bridge when it failed... and in the years since then it's been more difficult due to decreasing mobility. We're none of us getting any younger, so don't knock advancing age, it'll happen to you too one day! |

10 Aug 14 - 10:25 AM (#3649836) Subject: RE: Parking at Whitby From: Mo the caller I agree though. We've been used to thinking we can park free anywhere. 10 Aug 14 - 05:45 PM (#3649951) Subject: RE: Parking at Whitby From: Tootler Correction to some "facts" quoted above. The Park and Ride closes at 7pm not 6pm as stated somewhere above. Bus Pass holders get half price on the P & R. Source: North Yorks Council's relevant web page Unfortunately, the timetable link is returning a "404 Page not available" error. It was OK before the weekend but then Arriva are not the best of bus companies. When I checked at the end of last week, the last bus to the P & R was just before 6.45 from the bus station. I've parked my car at Sleights before now and gone and fetched it at 6pm when you can use the car parks for free. By that time most day visitors have gone home and there are plenty of spaces. Last year I came early and there were spaces by the leisure centre so I bought a day ticket. |
10 Aug 14 - 08:48 PM (#3649985) Subject: RE: Parking at Whitby From: GUEST,Guest The P & R is irrelevant as it is of no use to anyone staying for more than a day. There were certainly no concessions for Bus Passes when the service started but that could well have been the drivers not being given the necessary information / training. I have come across problems with the York P & R and that has been running for a number of years now. Arriva are certainly NOT one of the best bus operators. I assume Tootler only makes the odd day visit so yet again any observations made are irrelevant to anyone actually visiting for more than a day. Whitby, in common with most tourist destinations, is costly. I don't know how the locals can afford to live there. That said I have just returned from a week at Sidmouth where everything is very expensive and no - you don't get what you pay through the nose for. I noticed a large central disused property so if Wetherspoons can be persuaded to take it on then perhaps the other businesses would be encouraged not to rip off (take the piss out of) the Folk Festival and its attendees. |

12 Aug 14 - 01:55 PM (#3650483) Subject: RE: Parking at Whitby From: Tootler I was responding to earlier comments about the P & R. I usually spend 2-3 days at Whitby but I live reasonably near so I travel daily. I've not yet tried the Whitby P & R so I don't know how effective it is but it's long been needed. Last time I went to Whitby was for the quilt show. My wife has a blue badge and we got into disabled space down by the Spa no problems which has not been the case in the past. We've usually dropped her by the Spa then I've taken the car to find somewhere to park. Whitby (the town) is heaving at this time of year regardless of FW. Prices in pubs, cafés etc are the same during FW as any other time. At least I've not noticed any difference. The folk week is based in a popular holiday town with all that brings. |

12 Aug 14 - 04:07 PM (#3650522) Subject: RE: Parking at Whitby From: MoorleyMan Presumably 78 rpm, Tootler!? I am intrigued by your comment re Saltburn ("Rubbish! I spent most of yesterday in singarounds"). You may well have spent the time in singarounds, but in doing so you will have observed that any participant would have been extremely fortunate to get to perform more than one song at each of them. There were only two singarounds programmed during the afternoon - and these overlapped - then a very brief "music and song session" in the early evening, a festival folk club in the evening and a late-evening sing. So, even if one could have attended all of these (which I myself couldn't), I'd say that one's own singing opportunities were very limited, and in any case not necessarily the right occasions for trying a brand new song out for the first time in public. |
12 Aug 14 - 05:27 PM (#3650531) Subject: RE: Parking at Whitby From: nutty You missed the sat evening singaround in the Victoria then, Dave. The problem was not one of shortage of singarounds but of an abundance of local singers all willing to perform - but this really is a thread creep and belongs in the Saltburn FF thread |
12 Aug 14 - 06:12 PM (#3650538) Subject: RE: Parking at Whitby From: Noreen Tootler, it may be your experience that Prices in pubs, cafés etc are the same during FW as any other time but it's not been mine- the most extreme being in excess of £4 for a pint in the Black Horse last summer. I'm very sure that the locals there were not being charged that. Hence it was our only visit to said establishment- a shame as we've had good sings there in the past. |
12 Aug 14 - 07:32 PM (#3650550) Subject: RE: Parking at Whitby From: GUEST,Malcolm Storey In the years when I was involved with the festival I made a point of getting round as many of the likely or not venues as I could over the year. Just listening and talking to the locals was useful and it was a good way of finding out where the best pint might be found as well as indulging one of my hobbies - having a pint. I only ever visited the Black Horse once "out of season" as it were and found the prices extremely expensive. I can only assume that the locals were paying the same price as myself. I know there are some of the festival venues that have a two tier price list and find that abhorent but don't know what can be done about it. |
