Chord Req: C'mon and break my heart again

Came upon this Pete Rowan song again recently. The chord sequence I have worked out is pretty mediocre. Anyone have the definitive (or at least road-tested) chord sequence?

It's a 1,4,5. The actual title seems to be Break My Heart Again. It may be the harmonies that make your rendition of the song seem not as spot on as you'd like, no offence.

Try the take at

The guitar is just strumming a background, and it's pretty straight forward.

Does anyone know what the line about "joker moon" means?
Or have I misunderstood the lyrics? I hear this:

Ah, love! I thought you were my friend.
Mi corazon! We're like a joker moon.
Mi amor! Don't say this is the end.
It's too late to pretend.
Come on and break my heart again.

Thank you Guest. That is what is wrong with my chord sequence, it is 1,4,5 and feels and sounds a bit ploddy. I think I will just have to keep experimenting. I'm being lazy and don't really want to write it out and work out all the possible chord permutations, life is too short!
Harold, as far as I can determine they are the words. Heaven only knows what a joker moon is!

Every time I sing this song someone asks me what a joker moon is, and of course I can't answer. It's frustrating. Maybe it means something down there in Austin, Texas -- isn't that where Peter Rowan is from? And I don't know anyone in Austin to ask.

I have no idea what chords he uses, and probably couldn't play them if I knew (wasn't he the guitarist for Bill Monroe and the Bluegrass Boys?), but I have a lot of fun playing it like this:

I start with what I think of as a regular A chord.

In the second half of the first line I switch to a high A (F moved up 4 frets).

Then I slide back down using high-A, G#m, F#m, and E.

In between lines I play high-E, F#m, and E.

For the second line I use F#m, B7, and E (and I slide the B7 up 2 frets and then back down again just before the E).

Then, after an E7, I repeat all that; but instead of the B7 slide I insert another high-A, G#m, F#m.

Then I use that second version for the first two lines of the chorus.

For the third line of the chorus I use A, Am, E, for a little variety.

Then in between lines I throw in a high E and high C#m.

Then I finish it off with another F#m, B7, high-A, G#m, F#m, E.

Of course I add a lot of other notes to the chords along the way, but that's the basic pattern. The tricky part is timing the high-A, G#m, F#m, E slide with the singing.

Many thanks for that Guest. Just had a quick run at it and it is really promising. Now I'll go away and play about with it.

Peter Rowan started playing bluegrass when he was a student at Colgate University, many years ago. Born in Massachusetts.

Lyr. Add: BREAK MY HEART AGAIN

Cool springs flow from San Antone to Austin, Texas.
Sangre de Cristo, Hot Springs, New Mexico.
Mission bells are ringing over in el barrio
While in the darkness lovers whisper soft and low.

Mi corazón, we're like a joker moon,
Mi amor, don't say this is the end,
for it's too late to pretend.
Come on and break my heart
Come on and break my heart again.

Somewhat incoherent song. Putting together the San Antonio-Austin, TX area with the Sangre de Cristo Mountains in New Mexico is a bit of a stretch. Which Hot Springs?
el barrio- neighborhood or district.
We're like a joker moon? No comprende.

The last two verses-

Lay your tousled head upon my shoulder,
Let us lie awake and love away the darkness until dawn,
This overflowing feeling deep inside you
Sings of promises I'll keep within my heart.

When I awoke I found that I am dreaming
Of a tenderness beyond all broken vows.
You're a mystery that goes beyond all seeming.
Oh, how I long to hold you here and now.

Verse 3- Incoherent.
Let us lie awake.....until dawn
Verse 4- When I awoke....

...am dreaming?

Not certain if lyrics are correct.

That's the way it sounds to me as well, Q.

I used to wonder whether there's a Spanish word or phrase that sounds like joker moon. But my recently-acquired slight knowledge of Spanish pronunciation suggests that if that's the case he can't be pronouncing it correctly, whereas he does appear to be pronouncing the other Spanish words correctly.

So now I wonder if there's a Spanish or Native American expression (akin to new moon or harvest moon, or the dozens of Native American expressions listed at farmersalmanac.com/full-moon-names) that could be translated as joker moon. But to answer that we'd probably need someone from the US/Mexico border region whose first language is Spanish, or maybe someone of Native American ancestry.

I should clarify that I mean the lyrics as posted appear to be correct, not that I agree about them being incoherent.

Except for joker moon it all seems very clear to me, and very nice poetry.

Hi,

Don't know what it all means, probably because the poetry makes it harder to follow, but after listening to various versions, I'd say it sounds something like this:

Lyr. Add: BREAK MY HEART AGAIN

Cool springs flow from San Antone to Austin, Texas.
Sangre de Cristo, Hot Springs, New Mexico.
Mission bells are ringing over in el barrio
While in the darkness lovers whisper soft and low.

Chorus:
Ah, love, I thought you were my friend
Mi corazón, we're like a joker moon,
Mi amor, don't say this is the end,
'Cause it's too late to pretend.
Come on and break my heart
Come on and break my heart again.

(Come) Lay your tousled head upon my shoulder,
Let us lie awake and love away the darkness until dawn,
These overflowing feelings deep inside you
Bring the promises I'll keep within my heart when you are gone.

Chorus

Then I awoke and found that I was dreaming
Of a tenderness beyond all broken vows.
You're a mystery that goes beyond all seeming.
Oh, how I long to hold you here and now.

Chorus

Bye

FWIW, there was a band called Joker Moon in Texas in the 60's and 70's. They played at Armadillo World Headquarters in Austin.
Mentioned here: http://www.austinchronicle.com/music/2005-12-30/322055/

The album with Break My Heart Again was released in 1978.

Saw Peter just the other day in Santa Cruz. He did this in a very different arrangement/tempo than the original recording. I have owned his 1978 solo LP since it came out and probably haven't heard it in 20 years (sad). I love this song and want to learn it. Thanks!

OK, here's my take on the chords, in D. Suits my vocal range. You need to allow some room to go falsetto on "moon" 8^)

Lyr. Add: BREAK MY HEART AGAIN

Verse:
D                                    A
Cool springs flow from San Antone to Austin, Texas.
A                                     D
Sangre de Cristo, Hot Springs, New Mexico.
D                                    A
Mission bells are ringing over in el barrio
A                                             D
While in the darkness lovers whisper soft and low.

Chorus:
    G                         A
Ah, love, I thought you were my friend
       G                      A
Mi corazón, we're like a joker moon,
    G                         A
Mi amor, don't say this is the end,
A                           G
'Cause it's too late to pretend.
(melodic run from B down to A an octave lower)
A
Come on and break my heart
A          G               D      G    D
Come on and break my heart again.

------------------------------------------
I tried to line the chords up with the words, but it doesen't look right in the preview. In general the chord changes occur later in the bar, usually on the last word.

Sorry, just one more thing:

D7 at the end of each verse.
