Rosalie Sorrels needs our support 2014

This was posted on Rosalie Sorrells' Facebook page:

This is Kevin Sorrels I am managing my mothers facebook page and her website www.wayoutinidaho.net.

I have been working on this project to help her earn an income off the work she has done as a singer songwriter.

I take care of her now because she is now unable to do a lot of things she was able to do back in her prime.

The thing is now, she is living on Social security. She is living in the cabin that her dad built up in the mountains here in Idaho.

I go take care of her about 5 days a week. the other two days I found a lady that works for the senior center that brings her dinner and checks on her for me. I haven't let everyone know that she is not doing very well these days.

She has Dementia and is losing her memory. I don't know how much longer she will be able to live at the cabin due to her problems and that is where she wants to be.
I know everyone has done all kinds of benefits to help mom with some of her other problems that life has thrown her way but I feel it would be better if she could sell the music she worked her life to create.

I put together a two CD package with a signed photo that I am selling on her website. These Two CD's have been off the market since 1972 and 1973 they are; Travelin' Lady "the original one" and What ever happened to the girl that was.

I will be working on other projects also but I'm kinda using this project to do a little start up money raising process. It's not going as well as I planed so I am asking all of you, friends and fans of Rosalie to put the word out.

I have very little inventory of all the other CD's so this is my only way to kick start the website.

Thank all of you and please know I will do my very best to keep all of you informed of what Rosalie is up to and how she is doing. I will be posting anything new I can work up but I really don't like to have mom be under to much pressure to do anything new. I want to protect her from anyone that wants her to perform. She just can't do it anymore.

Thanks again sincerely, Kevin Sorrels.

P.S. That photo is from that time, 1972 and 1973 back when she was more honky-tonk although she is a real troubadour. Also she stood up against the big record companies and when independent 100% thats why these two albums were stored away and never to be sold! so enjoy Rosalie's past it was a hard road but she was the ORIGINAL Travelin' Lady.

I would think that that Dick & Sue could offer the best advice, though Kickstarter might be a good way to raise cash, especially for a known artist.

Hi there

If you could find the time to set up a Bandcamp page for those two albums, then please do. The nice thing about Bandcamp is that you can pay a fixed minimym amount, or voluntarily pay whatever you like above that.

you can buy either a download or a CD.

I don't buy CDs any more, I'm download-only these days, but I'd gladly donate some money.

I posted about these CDs a few years ago -

Anyone who loves Rosalie's music should grab them as fast as you can!

I repeat my suggestion that the following two albums deserve to
be made available:
Festival Records-Columbia Research Group SONGS OF THE MORMON PIONEERS,
and Prestige ROSALIE's SONGBAG.

Best wishes, Thomas.

Sorry this great lady is unwell. Wish I could help, but we're having tough times these days. When will the 2 albums be available on her website?

There was a also thread in 2012 when her cabin flooded. Here are some links Stilly River Sage posted there for background on Rosalie:

Let's add some content and context:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rosalie_Sorrels

Rosalie Sorrels (born 1933) is an American folk singer-songwriter who resides in the mountains near Boise, Idaho. She began her public career as a singer and collector of traditional folksongs in the late 1950s. During the early 1960s she left her husband and began traveling and performing at music festivals and clubs throughout the United States. She and her five children traveled across the country as she worked to support her family and establish herself as a performer. Along the way she made many lifelong friends among the folk and beat scene. Her career of social activism, storytelling, teaching, learning, songwriting, collecting folk songs, performing, and recording has spanned six decades. [There's much more at the link.]

Fresh Air remarks (audio not available)

American folk singer ROSALIE SORRELS may not be wildly famous but since the 1960s she's developed a near cult like following. Her admirers describe Sorrels as someone who has lived the life she now sings about. In fact, she was immortalized in a song by Nanci Griffith describing Sorrels as "Salt of the earth.....with a voice like wine." .Her newest CD is "Borderline Heart" by Green Linnet Records Inc. The book "Way Out in Idaho" is a collection of her poems, songs and recipes. In 1992, She received the recording industry "Indie" award for Best Storytelling album for her CD "Report From Grimes Creek."

Profile: Folk Music Matriarch Rosalie Sorrels on NPR
From member station WGBH in Boston, reporter Jill Kaufman profiles folk singer Rosalie Sorrels. Born in Idaho in 1933, she's considered a matriarch of American folk music, and recently the University of California at Santa Cruz dedicated an archive to house her papers, including news clippings about war protests and civil rights marches.

I lost my mom to vascular dementia... her mind/personality in 2012 and her body in 2013... she was 88. It's a series of mini strokes that act like a cancer of the mind/brain... everything is eaten away until there's not enough left to keep the body going. The worst was when she was briefly aware that something was terribly wrong.

It really sucks for all involved.

Since she tested negative for any genes associated with the disorder, keeping blood sugar and pressure under control will probably help the rest of the family stave this off.
