16 Aug 14 - 02:20 PM (#3651457) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: about pigeons who dont know theyve moved From: Mysha Hi Jo, As # said, it's called "King of Rome", the only difference being that the original is actually called "The King of Rome". And that's not much help as people often drop the article. Not a lot to go on, I know. You might have to buy the Guide Cats for the Blind CD it's on. Since the CD-s were created for a good cause, you might not find that a bad idea, anyway. Bye Mysha |

25 Aug 14 - 04:40 PM (#3653992) Subject: Lyr Add: THE KING OF ROME (Les Barker) From: Jim Dixon THE KING OF ROME Written by Les Barker As sung by Sic Transit on the various-artists album "Missing Persians File: Guide Cats for the Blind, Vol. 2" (2005) 1. In the West End of Derby lives a working man. He says: "I can't fly, but me pigeon can." I heard magic in in his words, So I bought the bird, Took him straight back home and down the yard. 2. He said: "This pigeon's called the King of Rome. You set him free, he flies back home." So I bought the King, Set him free, and he took wing. I'd a feeling I'd be buying him again. 3. I bought the King of Rome this afternoon. I'm returning to the West End very soon. I bought the King today, Bought him yesterday. I bought the bastard seven times this week. 4. Experience tells me the hardest part Of keeping homing pigeons is the start. I've come to disapprove Of pigeons who don't know they've moved. One of us has not been very smart. 5. It's a fool, they say, who constantly forgives A pigeon for not knowing where he lives. He's seen the local streets. I've even showed him the receipts. I think he goes back home to check the cash. 6. In the West End of Derby lives a wealthy man. He says: "I can't fly but me pigeon can, And at fifty quid a throw, It don't hurt hurt to let him go. I know I'll be seeing him again." |
25 Aug 14 - 04:48 PM (#3653997) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: about pigeons who dont know theyve moved From: Jim Dixon Apparently Barker's song is a parody of a different song. See the one in the DT: KING OF ROME written by Dave Sudbury, as sung by June Tabor on "Aqaba" (1988). |
