Sing Justice and Peace for Ferguson

Subject: Sing Justice and Peace for Ferguson
From: wysiwyg

I dunno how it is for y'allses but I was feeling like I didn't know "what I could do about Ferguson" until I picked up on long-established post-vacay priorities. We had gotten back with no time to spare before weekend church services, so Job One was eat, sleep. I fit checking email and FB around that, checked the news (omg ferguson).... it had been a no-TV vacay.

We also knew that Monday (yesterday) would be devoted to an all-day funeral. Still, last night I got onto the Week One tasks-- getting a songbook to the printer by making final, Final, FINAL corrections. And as soon as I opened the text I saw God's plan for me as clear as day: it's the JUSTICE songbook, I reminded myself. Greg surprised me also with a long-needed autoharp repair, so now I can songlead from that book. It's got racial equality all thru it!!! Next: craft a Diocese - wide piece on Ferguson.... because I can and because no one else has done it.

What can you sing/have you been singing?

DONE MADE MY VOW TO THE LORD
Traditional Negro Spiritual. American Negro Songs, 230 Folk Songs and Spirituals, Religious and Secular. John W. Work, Dover Publications, 1998. Learned from the singing of Sister Thea Bowman. Adapted, edited, arranged, v. 5 © 2014 Susan O. Hinton for
The Good News-Goodtime Band. Dedicated to our harmonica-playing friend, Nathan.

REFRAIN:
Done made my vow to the Lord, and I never will turn back. I will go, I shall go, see what the end will be.

1. Sometimes I'm up, sometimes I'm down (See what the end will be).
But still my soul is heav'nly bound (See what the end will be).

2. I'll pray and pray and never stop (See what the end will be),
Until I reach the mountain top (See what the end will be).

3. The man who loves to serve the Lord (See what the end will be),
Will surely get his just reward (See what the end will be).

4. When every star refuse to shine (See what the end will be),
I know King Jesus will soon be by (See what the end will be).

5. And if I go before He comes (See what the end will be).
I'll know His work I've surely done (See what the end will be).

6. If you get there before I do (See what the end will be),
Tell all my friends I'm coming too (See what the end will be).

THE RECONCILIATION SONG
By Buddy Owens, Claire Cloninger, and Morris Chapman. Learned from the singing of Morris Chapman on "Gospel Praise." Adapted, edited, arranged © 2014 Susan O. Hinton for The Good News-Goodtime Band. Dedicated to the memory of Mr. Daniel Rudd, an abo- litionist who argued for the "one Father/one race" theology controversial in post-Civil War times, and the full humanity of Black people.

1. Oh let us be the generation of reconciliation and peace.
And let us be a holy nation, where pride and prejudice shall cease.
Let us speak the truth in love to the lost and least of these, and serve the Lord in unity, so others will believe.
Let us be the generation of reconciliation and peace.

REFRAIN:
Have we not one Father? Have we not one faith? And have we not one Calling: to become one holy race?
Oh, let us be the generation of reconciliation and peace.

2. Oh let us be the generation of reconciliation and peace.
And let us build on one foundation, till He comes and the wars of men shall cease.
Let us share the love of Jesus without hypocrisy, for mercy and forgiveness begin with you and me.
Let us be the generation of reconciliation and peace.

3. So let us pray for restoration, and seek the Lord "together on our knees,"
Let us keep our hearts from evil, and cling to what is good, in everything.
Let us honor one another and love the brotherhood, for if there is One Father, there is only family-hood.
Let us be the generation of reconciliation and peace.

YOUR NAME
By Paul Baloche, John Kee, Piers Faccini. Adapted, edited, arranged, v. 3, 4 © 2014 Susan O. Hinton for The Good News-Goodtime Band. Dedicated to Tom and Martha Benson.

1. As evening comes and daylight fades You inspire songs of praise
That rise from earth to touch Your heart, and glorify Your Name.

REFRAIN:
Your Name is a strong and mighty tower. Your Name is a shelter like no other.
Your Name, let the nations sing it louder. 'Cause nothing has the power to save, but Your Name.

2. Jesus, in Your Name we pray: Come and fill our hearts today.
Lord, give us strength to live for You, and glorify Your Name.

3. Send us from this place today in Your Spirit and Your Grace,
To do Your Holy Will-- Your Work-- and glorify Your Name.

4. In Your Name may all we do bear Your likeness though and through,
Show Your mercy (Justice too), and glorify Your Name.

THAT'S WHAT HIS LOVE CAN DO
Traditional? Learned from the singing of The Thomas Family Band on "The Condition of Your Heart." Adapted, edited, verses 3, 5 © 2014 Susan O. Hinton and arranged © 5/24/14 Greg and Susan O. Hinton for The Good News-Goodtime Band. Dedicated to John and Lill Kilbourne; first song to go into the Blue Songbook.

REFRAIN:
It can lift you up when you're feeling blue.
It can part the clouds, let the sun shine through.
It can bring you peace that you never knew--
That's what His love can do. That's what His love can do.

1. It redeems the promise of a brighter day,
And it wipes the stain of our sins away.
It brings life eternal for me and you.
That's what His love can do.

2. Oh His love can push the mighty seas aside;
Yes, His love can steer us o'er the strongest tide.
Oh, His precious love can move a mountain, too!
That's what His love can do.

3. It can walk the floors when a baby cries
And provide a reason when we don't know why.
It can show your purpose as you journey through.
That's what His love can do.

4. Oh His love can comfort you in times of trial,
Yes, His love can lead you through the long hard miles.
Oh, His precious love can heal the scars on you.
That's what His love can do.

5. At the end of day, love, as the sunset nears,
It can whisper the Name only you can hear.
It can call you home to your family true--
That's what His love can do.

ABBA, FATHER
Learned from the singing of Ed and Edith Vetter, who brought this song back from Cursillo.

Abba, Father, send your Spirit-- glory Jesus Christ!
Abba, Father, send your Spirit-- glory Jesus Christ.
Glory Hallelujah, glory Jesus Christ,
Glory Hallelujah, glory Jesus Christ!
                                                                                       (repeat, as led by songleader)

HE CAN BE FOUND
By Ella Barrett and Faye Cunningham. Learned from the singing of The Louvin Brothers on "Satan Is Real." Adapted, edited, arranged, verses 3, 4, 5 © 5/10/2014 Susan O. Hinton for The Good News-Goodtime Band. Dedicated to Barb Perkins.

1. He can be found in a mother's smile;
He can be found in the eyes of a child.
He can be found, He is everywhere;
When we kneel in prayer each plea He hears.

RFRAIN: He can be found in the air that we breathe;
He always hears a heart that grieves.
He can be found on life's stormy sea--
He can be found in you and me.

2. He can be found in the hearts of great men;
He will reach down for one who has sinned.
The poorest child, and the rich man's son--
All who believe, and who will let Him come.
3. He can be found in Black and White;
He can be found in colors, all bright.
He's not hiding-- for He made us all;
He can be found when we hear His call.

4. He can be found in young and old;
He can be found in warm and in cold.
In that moment when any life starts,
He can be found in each beating heart.

5. He can be found at our last breath--
If we accept Him before earthly death.
He can be found in the family's farewell,
With trusting love, His story they tell.

HEAVEN'S BRIGHT SHORE
Attributed to A. Kennedy and Alison Krauss (but probably Traditional). Learned from the singing of The Thomas Family Band on
"The Condition of Your Heart." Adapted, edited, arranged, v. 5 © 5/17/14 2014 Susan O. Hinton for The Good News-Goodtime Band. Dedicated to Loren and Connie Christley.

1. Out on the hills of Glory Land,
So happy and free at God's right hand,
They tell of a place of marvelous Grace
On Heaven's bright shore.

REFRAIN:
On Heaven's bright shore (on Heaven's bright shore),
There'll be no more dying (over there);

Not one more grave (not one little grave)
In all that fair land (that wonderful land)!

Not even a tear will dim the eye,
And no one up there will say goodbye,

Just singing His praise through endless days
On Heaven's bright shore (on Heaven's bright shore).

2. The pilgrims on earth someday will go
To live in that home for evermore--
Trusting in Him who died for sin
And rose from the grave.

3. When I must cross that rolling tide,
There'll be someone on the other side
Welcoming me to that fair land
Made perfect by Love.

4. And when I walk up that milky white way
I'll see that homecoming band in array.
How great it must be for the angels to see
A pilgrim reach home!

5. For as we are told, one soul that is lost
Is precious, its worth of marvelous cost.
Gathered to home we surely will be,
On Heaven's bright shore.

DID CHRIST O'ER SINNERS WEEP?
Words: Benjamin Beddome ("He wept for me"), in A Selection of Hymns from the Best Authors, by John Rippon, 1787. Learned from the singing of Doc Watson on "On Praying Ground." The tune Doc Watson sang is unknown (Traditional). I heard this extraordinarily beautiful and strong hymn on the way home from Ohio, climbing through the dark Moshannon Valley Mountains along Route 80.Adapted, edited, verses 3,4 © 2014 Susan O. Hinton and arranged © 2014 Greg and Susan O. Hinton for The Good News-Goodtime Band. Dedicated to Mike and Cherie.

And when He was come near, He beheld the city, and wept over it… Luke 19:41

RFEFRAIN:
Did Christ o'er sinners weep,
And shall our cheeks be dry?
Let floods of holy, healing grief
Spring forth from ev'ry eye.

1. The Son of God in tears
The blessed angels see!
Those tears were shed for everyone;
They were shed for even me.

2. He wept that we might weep;
Each sin demands a tear:
In heav'n alone no sin is found;
There is no weeping there.

3. O news so welcome hear,
That captives are set free!
The better flood His Gospel gives,
That heal-ed we may be.

4. This holy flood of tears
Shall cleanse the heart, the mind;
Renew our faith, let loose our love--
His Kingdom here to find.

COME INTO HIS PRESENCE

Come into his presence singing: Jesus is Lord! Jesus is Lord, Jesus is Lord!

Come into his presence singing: Worthy to the Lamb! Worthy to the Lamb, Worthy to the Lamb!

4. Come into his presence singing: Holy is the Lamb! Holy is the Lamb, Holy is the Lamb!
Come into his presence singing: Holy is the Lamb! Holy is the Lamb, Holy is the Lamb!

4. Come into his presence singing: Alleluia! Alleluia, Alleluia!
Come into his presence singing: Alleluia! Alleluia, Alleluia!
                                                                   (repeat, as led by songleader)

SPIRIT OF THE LIVING GOD
Learned from the singing of Ed and Edith Vetter, who brought this song back from Cursillo.

1. Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on me.
Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on me.
Melt me, mold me, fill me, use me.
Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on me.
2. Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on us.
Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on us.
Melt us, mold us, fill us, use us.
Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on us.
(repeat, as led by songleader)
BETTER THAN TODAY
Jeff Stevens; Leslie Satcher. Learned from the singing of Don Williams on "And So It Goes." Adapted, edited, arranged, v. 4 © 5/25/2014 Susan O. Hinton for The Good News-Goodtime Band. Dedicated to Lew and Joanne Niles.

1. I've got high hopes that tomorrow
Is going to be better than today.
I know you can't see it a comin'…
But why not believe it anyway?

REFRAIN:
Call it a prayer, call it a dream,
Call it a leap of faith, if you call it anything…
'Cause I got high hopes that tomorrow
Is going to be better than today.

2. I got two hands that ain't afraid to work hard
And I jump out of bed every day.
Yes I know these times now are real tough,
But lookin' on the bright side always pays!
3. Oh I know, it's been awful dry here
But with the Lord's provision, that'll change;
No I can't say we've seen a drop yet,
But somehow, we seem to smell the rain.

4. And that prayer I've had for so long now,
Oh, I know He's hearing every plea.
Though it might not be quite His time yet,
Still I know He's busy changing me.

CONDITION OF YOUR HEART   Matt. 13:1-8, Matt. 13:31
By Amy Thomas. Learned from the radio singing of The Thomas Family Band, after church, one lonely Lenten morning in Xenia, Ohio. CD courtesy of the Thomas Family. Adapted and verse 3 © 2014 Susan O. Hinton and arrangement © 2014 Greg and Susan Hinton. This song sparked off what would become our "last" gospel songbook. Dedicated to former band members.

"A sower went out to sow…."
"The kingdom of heaven is like a grain of mustard seed, which a man took and sowed in his field."

1. Jesus was talking to a multitude one day; He spoke of the Sower and the Seed.
Some seeds fell by the wayside and were quickly trampled down… The birds came along and set to feed.
Some sprang up on rocky ground, but withered soon away, while others were choked out by all the weeds.
But some fell on fertile ground, and fruit began to yield a hundredfold, by God's sufficiency.

REFRAIN:
What is the condition of your heart? Is it hard just like the stony ground, where no plow can leave a mark?
Or is your heart tender, bearing fruit in its due time?
What is the condition of your heart? What is the condition of your heart?

2. Jesus said the seed is the Word of God, the wayside is the one who lends an ear.
Satan comes so quickly, and takes the Word away, but the Word of God the hard in heart can't hear.
The Word that fell on the shallow heart never could take root; temptation came and soon they fell away.
Seeds that fell on a worried heart were soon chopped out by cares, while the noble heart bears fruit another day.

3. Another story Jesus gave about the seeds we sow said the Kingdom is like a mustard seed.
A man took and sowed one, out in his field, it grew to become a spreading tree.
Birds found its branches there, and raised their families, who flew to all the corners of the earth.
So is the Word of God in every human mouth, though starting as the tiniest of seeds.

Bridge:
He who has an ear, let him hear, let him hear. He who has an ear, let him hear!
What is the condition of your heart? What is the condition of your heart?

HE IS LORD
Learned from the singing of Ed and Edith Vetter, who brought this song back from Cursillo.

He is Lord, He is Lord, He is risen from the dead and He is Lord.
Every knee shall bow, every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.
(repeat, as led by songleader)

O THE LOVE OF MY REDEEMER
By Josh Caterer. © Captive Bird Music ASCAP. Learned from the singing of Joe Mullins and The Radio Ramblers on "Hymns From The Hills." Adapted, edited, arranged, verse 3 extended © 2014 Susan O. Hinton for The Good News-Goodtime Band. First heard (quartet style) in dark mountains, on the long, cold drive from Xenia to Mansfield. Dedicated to Sherry Bodine, with thanks for bringing us to
St. Paul's and being our faithful family advocate.

1. Highest heights or darkest deep,
Be there pain or poverty--
There is nothing that can keep
My Redeemer's love from me.
All alone though I may feel,
All the world my enemy…
Still, there's no one that can steal
My Redeemer's love from me.

REFRAIN:
O the love of
My Redeemer--
Never failing,
Come what may!
He has purchased
My forgiveness…
And has washed my sins away!
2. Although burdened by the weight
Of great trial or tragedy,
None of these can separate
My Redeemer's love from me.
Though the earth's foundations shake,
Driving wind or raging sea,
Neither death nor life can take
My Redeemer's love from me.

3. Through this world's few passing days--
And through all eternity--
I will never cease to praise
My Redeemer's love for me.
I will praise Him all my days,
Seasons' chill or seasons' heat,
Still my heart will sing always,
My Redeemer's love for me.

THE MASTER IS WAITING
Harry Stinson. Learned from the singing of Harry Stinson on "Who Is This Man?" Adapted, edited, arranged, v. 4 © 2014 Susan O. Hinton for The Good News-Goodtime Band. Dedicated to the Tevlin family.

1. What do you want? What do you need?
What have you done? Do you want to be free?
Are you losing the battle-- the battle with sin?
Well the Master is waiting, waiting to come in.

REFRAIN:
Oh He'll lift you up, yes He'll lift you up.
He'll stand right beside you, to guide and to win.
Well the Master is waiting, waiting to come in.
2. And if there's an answer, it's easy to find,
Drop down to your heart, and rest there awhile.
'Cause right there in the silence, beneath all the din,
Yes, the Master is waiting, waiting to come in.

3. So let down your guard, once and for all,
'Cause that Voice that you're hearing-- that's your personal Call.
Don't try to resist it, don't try to defend,
You know the Master is waiting, waiting to come in.

BEHOLD WHAT MANNER

Behold what manner of love the Father has given unto us-- Behold what manner of love the Father has given unto us!
That we should be called the children of God-- That we should be called the children of God!
(repeat, as led by songleader)

THY HOLY WINGS, O SAVIOR   Psalm 91:4, Luke 13:34, Psalm 119:114, Psalm 51:10
Tune: Traditional Swedish Folk Melody. Words: Lina V. Sandell-Berg, 1865, trans. by Gracia Grindal, 1983. Adapted, edited, arranged © 2014 Greg and Susan O. Hinton for The Good News-Goodtime Band. Dedicat ed to Laurel Paulson-Pierce.

1. Thy holy wings, O Savior, spread gently over me; and let me rest securely, through good and ill in Thee.
O be my strength and portion, my rock and hiding place, and let my every moment be lived within Thy Grace.

2. O let me nestle near Thee, within Thy downy breast; where I will find sweet comfort, and peace within Thy nest.
O close Thy wings around me, and keep me safely there, for I am but a new-born and need Thy tender care.

3. O wash me in the waters, of Noah's cleansing flood. Give me a willing spirit, a heart both clean and good.
And take into Thy keeping, thy children great and small, and while we sweetly slumber, enfold us, one and all.

REJOICE
Learned from the singing of Ed and Edith Vetter, who brought this song back from Cursillo.

Rejoice in the Lord always, and again I say, "Rejoice!" Rejoice in the Lord always, and again I say, "Rejoice!"
Rejoice, rejoice, and again I say, "Rejoice!"
(repeat, as led by songleader)

ACROSS THE RIVER FROM HERE
Learned from the singing of the Lewis Family on "The Golden Gospel Best of The Lewis Family." Adapted, edited, arranged,
v. 3,5 © 2014 Susan O. Hinton for The Good News-Goodtime Band. Dedicated to Ed and Fran Vetter.

1. Someday, I'll go to that far-off shore
Across the river from here.
I'll live in sunshine forevermore,
Across the river from here.

REFRAIN: Across the river from here I'll go,
Across the river from here!
I'll stand beside Him someday, I know,
Across the river from here.

2. My home awaits in a mansion fair
Across the river from here.
To reach that gate I must climb that stair
Across the river from here.
3. I taste the air that is pure and sweet
Across the river from here.
It soon will carry me, friends to meet
Across the river from here.

4. I'll leave my treasures on earth behind
Across the river from here.
I know new treasures up there I'll find
Across the river from here.

5. And when I go on that lovely ride
Across the river from here.
I'll look below as your steps, He guides,
Across the river from here.

TURN YOUR EYES UPON JESUS
Learned from the singing of Ed and Edith Vetter, who brought this song back from Cursillo.

Turn your eyes upon Jesus; look full in His wonderful face;
And the things of Earth will go strangely dim… in the Light of His glory and Grace.
(repeat, as led by songleader)

EAT THIS BREAD
Eat this bread, drink this cup, come to Me and never be hungry. Eat this bread, drink this cup, come to Me and you will not thirst.

BE JESUS TO SOMEONE TODAY
By Jon Weisberger and Tim Stafford. Learned from the singing of Joe Mullins and The Radio Ramblers. Adapted, edited, arranged
© 2014 Susan O. Hinton for The Good News-Goodtime Band. Dedicated to Rose Weatherby.

1. While traveling on in this world, our treasures are few;
We may not have much but there's always
One thing we can do:
Look to the Savior of man, and follow his way--
As you walk through this life,
Be Jesus to someone today.

REFRAIN:
Do unto others
As you would have them do to you.
Glorify God,
Let His holy Spirit shine through.
Serve thy brother in need,
And teach him to pray.
As you walk through this life,
Be Jesus to someone today.

2. When others are tempted to sin, be watchful and kind.
Let not temptation to judgement
Be first in your mind!
Remember that Jesus was tempted by Satan to stray.
Speak from a heart filled with love, and
Be Jesus to someone today.
3. Be ever humble and ready to hold out your hand.
Watch for those who have fallen
And help them to stand!
A brother in Christ is loyal, steadfast, and true.
Give of yourself,
And be Jesus to someone today.

4. Welcome the children among the worshiping
    throng.
And let them be happy and loud,
Their praise is not wrong!
Remember He welcomed the children--
   the young and the gray.
For they too are here to
Be Jesus to someone today.

LIFE BEYOND DEATH
Words: E. Montgomery and M. Montgomery. Tune: Traditional. Learned from the singing of Traditional Grass on "I Believe in the Old Time Way." Adapted, edited, v. 1 © 2014 Susan O. Hinton and arranged Susan © 2014 and Greg Hinton for The Good News-Goodtime Band. Dedicated to Willard Heatley and family, in memory of June.

1. On earth, oh so fast do we journey--
Just trying to catch our breath--
Forgetting it's just preparation
For a land where there's life beyond death.

REFRAIN:
There's life beyond death there in Heaven,
So loved ones, meet me at rest!
We'll have a family reunion
In a land where there's life beyond death.

2. Praises and joy only enter
In the land where there's eternal rest.
And prayer has prepared my way homeward
To a land where there's life beyond death.
3. So spend all your grief on the sinners,
Smile with me-- I'm going to rest!
I'll dwell in the house of our Savior,
In a land where there's life beyond death.

4. His angels of death will surround me,
When near is my very last breath.
Then soon I'll be living where I'll be
In a land where there's life beyond death.

OUR DARKNESS
From Taize, as learned by Greg Hinton.

Our darkness is never darkness in Your sight: the deepest night is clear as the daylight.
(repeat, as led by songleader)

BETTER FARTHER ON
By Doyle Lawson. Learned from the singing of Larry Sparks. Adapted, edited, arranged, v. 3 © 2014 Susan O. Hinton for
The Good News-Goodtime Band. Dedicated to Ed Vetter.

1. As we travel through the desert
Storms beset us on our way;
But beyond the River Jordan
Lies a field of endless days.

REFRAIN:
Farther on still-- go farther!
Count the mile stones one by one.
Jesus will forsake you never;
It is better farther on!

2. Oh, my brother, are you weary
Of the roughness of the road?
Does your strength begin to fail you?
Let the Savior bear your load.
3. Farther on? Oh, how much farther?
Passing mile stones every day.
No more doubting, only trusting;
He has called me to His way.

4. At the grave will you be singing,
Though you weep for one that's gone?
Singing as we once did, singing:
"It is better farther on!"

ONE DAY JESUS WILL CALL MY NAME
Learned from the singing of Lynda Randle on "Timeless." Adapted, edited, arranged © 2012 Susan O. Hinton for
The Good News-Goodtime Band. In memory of Carol Oldberg.

1. Some days drag, and some days fly.
And some days I think I'm gonna lay down and die.
Some days fill me, and some days drain,
And one day Jesus will call my name!

REFRAIN:
One day Jesus will call my name;
As days go by, I hope I don't stay the same.
I want to get so close to Him that it's no big change,
On that day when Jesus calls my name.
2. Some days I sing, and some days I cry.
Some days I ask Him, "Oh my good Lord, WHY!?"
Some days His work for me is clear and plain,
On those days when Jesus calls my name.

3. Most days I pray, but some days I curse.
And too many days, you know I put myself first.
But it's not what I do, or am, the Cross made that plain.
For one day Jesus will call my name!

By Burton Collins, Clayton Mills, Lisa Stewart. Learned from the singing of Taranda Greene. Adapted, edited, arranged
© 2014 Susan O. Hinton for The Good News-Goodtime Band. Dedicated to Jane Wood and to the Renner family.

Lord knows I'm ready, it don't worry my mind!
You see, I ain't afraid of nothing because I believe
I've got a sky full of angels watching over me.

REFRAIN:
You can take my possessions,
You can take all my gold--
Nobody but Jesus gonna take my soul!
2. Walk through darkness, I don't need no light--
My faith in Jesus gonna be my guide.
You see, I ain't afraid of nothing because I believe
I've got a sky full of angels watching over me.

My sweet Savior's gonna pull me out!
You see, I ain't afraid of nothing because I believe
I've got a sky full of angels watching over me!

MORE PRECIOUS THAN SILVER
Learned from the singing of Ed and Edith Vetter, who brought this song back from Cursillo.

Lord, you are more precious than silver. Lord, you are more costly than gold.
Lord, you are more beautiful than diamonds, and nothing I desire compares with you.
(repeat, as led by songleader)

HEART OF HEARTS
Al Anderson; Sharon Vaughn; Stephen Bruton. Learned from the singing of Don Williams on "And So It Goes."
Adapted, edited, arranged, verses 2, 5 © 2014 Susan O. Hinton for The Good News-Goodtime Band. Dedicated to Cherie.

1. In your heart of hearts, there is a Voice;
It speaks from Truth, and not from choice.
It sees it all, not just in part--
Deep inside your heart of hearts.

REFRAIN:
Just listen to your life, it's talking to you.
There'll always be a Light running through you,
Flowing from a Well that never runs dry…

2. You've always known what's really true,
What's best for all, not just for you.
'Cause we're all here, we all take part,
And Justice reigns in your heart of hearts.

3. When you're at the point (down on your knees),
You can find your weakness can be your strength; à
'Cause where one ends, the other starts,
Deep inside your heart of hearts.

4. A secret place known to your soul
Where you can't hide but you can go
When it's all too much and you fall apart,
There's a state of Grace called your heart of hearts.

5. It's so much simpler than it seems
This life we share, with all our dreams,
And day by day, with a fresh new start,
Joining life, with heart to heart.

6. In your heart of hearts, there is a voice;
It speaks from Truth, and not from choice.
It sees it all, not just in part--
Deep inside your heart of hearts.

AH, LORD GOD
Learned from the singing of Ed and Edith Vetter, who brought this song back from Cursillo.

Ah, Lord God, Thou hast made the heavens and the earth by Thy great power.
Ah, Lord God, Thou hast made the heavens and the earth by Thy outstretched arm.
Nothing is too difficult for Thee. Nothing is too difficult for Thee.
Great and mighty God, great in counsel and mighty in deed.
Nothing, nothing, absolutely nothing, nothing is too difficult for Thee.
(repeat, as led by songleader)

REFRAIN:
Oh, how He loves you, Oh, how He loves me, oh, how He loves you and me,

2. Jesus to Calv'ry did go, His love for mankind to show; what He did there brought hope from despair.
(repeat, as led by songleader)

LORD SEND YOUR ANGELS
Learned from the singing of Candy Christmas and Sheri Easter. Adapted, edited, verses 3, 4 © 2014 Susan O. Hinton for The Good News-Goodtime Band. Dedicated to Sandy Losinger.

1. When I'm alone and the light slowly fades, cold with the night closing in...
I know a shadow of Almighty wings. Lord, won't You send them again?

REFRAIN:
Lord, send Your angels to watch over me; I'm so afraid of the dark!
Lord, send Your angels to watch over me... wrap me in sheltering arms.
Shield me! Keep me! Hold me safe in Your arms!
Lord, send Your angels to watch over me... wrap me in sheltering arms.

2. Sometimes the child still inside of me cries, with fears of the dangers unseen...
And questions with answers I can't seem to find-- then You send Your angels to me!

3. Deep in the darkness of winter's half light, wondering if Spring ever was.
I call Your Name and Your Light fills my heart-- You send Your angels to me!

4. And at the last, when eternal night beckons to eternal day.
Then as You gather me safe to Your heart, angels will sing all the way.

I HEARD IT FIRST ON THE RADIO
By William J. & Gloria Gaither. Learned from the singing of Gaither Vocal Band. Adapted, edited, arranged © 2014 Susan O. Hinton for The Good News-Goodtime Band. I fell in love with this song years ago; illness kept me from bringing it into our repertoire till now. It's really a quartet song; hope we caught the tune! Dedicated to WBZI-FM.

1. Jesus loves me, this I know for the Bible tells me so; and I heard it first on the radio.
This love of God so rich and strong shall be the saints' and angels' song; and I heard it first on the radio.
Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound: the lost and lonely can be found, and Grace can even save a wretch like me!
No other love could make a way; no other love my debt could pay. And I heard it first on the radio.

2. Needing refuge for my soul, when I had no place to go; and I heard it first on the radio.
From a life of wasted years, He gave me peace and calmed my fears; and I heard it first on the radio.
Had I not heard where would I be without this love that lifted me, when I was lost and nothing else would help?
Just as I was without one plea, sweet Jesus came and rescued me… and I heard it first on the radio.

Alas, and did my Savior bleed that captive spirits could be freed; and I heard it first on the radio.
My soul has found a resting place, until I meet Him face to face... and I heard it first on the radio.
I love to tell the story true, and those who know still love it, too; oh, what a precious Friend we have in Him!
And when in glory, saints will tell, 'twill be the theme they love so well-- and I heard it first on the radio.

FATHER I ADORE YOU
Learned from the singing of Ed and Edith Vetter, who brought this song back from Cursillo.

1. Father, I adore you, lay my life before you. How I love you.
2. Jesus, I adore you, lay my life before you. How I love you.
3. Spirit, I adore you, lay my life before you. How I love you.                                         (repeat, as led by songleader)

ON JORDAN'S STORMY BANKS I STAND ... the glory of God gives [the city] light; the Lamb is its lamp." Rev.21:23
Words: Samuel Stennett (1727-1795); Music: Miss M. Durham, in Southern Harmony, 1835). Adapted, edited, arranged © 2014 Susan O. Hinton for The Good News-Goodtime Band. Dedicated to Sheila Prevost.

1. On Jordan's stormy banks I stand,
And cast a wishful eye
To Canaan's fair and happy land,
Where my possessions lie.

REFRAIN:
I am bound for the promised land,
I am bound for the promised land;
Oh who will come and go with me?
I am bound for the promised land.

2. The transporting, rapturous, wondrous scene,
That rises to my sight!
Sweet fields arrayed in living green,
And rivers of delight!

3. There generous fruits that never fail,
On trees immortal grow;
There rocks and hills, and brooks and vales,
With milk and honey flow.
4. O'er all those wide extended plains
Shines one eternal day;
There God the Son forever reigns,
And scatters night away.

5. No chilling winds or poisonous breath
Can reach that healthful shore;
Neither sickness, sorrow, pain, nor death,
Are felt and feared no more.

6. When I shall reach that happy place,
I'll be forever blest,
For I shall see my Father's face,
And in His bosom rest.

7. Filled with delight my raptured soul
Would here no longer stay;
Though Jordan's waves around me roll,
Oh fearless I'd launch away.

REST MY SOUL
Words: Rebecca Reynolds, Wynken Owl, BMI. Music: Ron Block, Moonlight Canyon Publishing. Learned from the singing of Ron Block on "Walking Song," via WBZI's "Hymns from the Hills." Adapted, edited, arranged, verse 4 © 2014 Susan O. Hinton for The Good News-Goodtime Band. Dedicated to Joyce Peterson.

1. Hush now! stirring, troubled waters,
Meet each fear by choosing rest.
Lean upon the Love of Jesus--
Ride this storm on Heaven's breast.

REFRAIN:
I am calm and I am quiet
For my hope is in the Lord.
Rest, my soul, for He is with me--
Lives within me evermore.

2. Hear the gentle Savior calleth,
Sings across the angry skies.
Quiets Earth with hymns of promise,
Bearing all that trust applies.
2. Every tremor He has answered,
Terrors shorn from all alarms;
Shelters He the shaken children,
Lifts the trembling in His arms.

3. Drink the sleep that courts thee sweetly,
Lay your deadly doing down.
Sink into the love of Jesus,
All you've lost in Him now found.

5. Still again, the Savior calleth,
Sings across ten thousand skies.
Every word a song of promise,
All is well that trust confides.

THIS IS THE DAY
Learned from the singing of Ed and Edith Vetter, who brought this song back from Cursillo.

This is the day that the Lord has made, that the Lord has made,
We will rejoice, we will rejoice and be glad in it, and be glad in it.
This is the day that the Lord has made, we will rejoice and be glad in it, and be glad in it.
This is the day, this is the day that the Lord has made!
                               (repeat, as led by songleader)

I'LL BE ALRIGHT ("all right" is a different song)
By the Rev. F.C. Barnes. Learned from the singing of Janice Brown and the Rev. F.C. Barnes on "Rough Side of the Mountain."
Adapted, edited, arranged, v. 2-6 © Susan O. Hinton for The Good News-Goodtime Band. Dedicated to Rich Perkins.

REFRAIN:
I'll be alright-- alright!-- yes-- the Lord has told me-- I'm going to be alright!
As long as I know I've got the Lord, I'll be alright! Alright, alright, alright, alright!"

1. Remember Job-- he was sick so long,
You know the flesh fell from his bones.
And his wife came running to him,
Said, "Job, I don't see how you can keep going on."
Job looked at the woman, and he looked in the sky,
Said, "I'm going to trust God until I die.
I know God won't pass me by--"
Job said, I'll be alright!"

2. Remember Shadrach, and Abednego,
And that third one, Meshach… it was long ago,
Well Nebuchadnezzar sent them to the fire,
But God heard about it, on the Trouble-Wire.
They were praying, and God didn't hear, "WHY!?"
Heard them say, "I'm going to trust God until I die.
I know God won't pass me by--"
Those boys said, I'll be alright!"

3. Remember old Daniel in the lion's den,
He could have thought he was at the end.
But Daniel trusted He'd get him out.
God sent his angel and shut the lions' mouths,
Well Daniel was blameless, and so he cried:
Said, "I'm going to trust God until I die.
I know God won't pass me by--"
Daniel said, I'll be alright!"
4. Remember Peter, and Andrew too,
They were fishermen, yes! Through and through.
But Jesus said, "Follow me until the end,
And I'll make you mighty fishers of men."
They picked up more brothers, who they had passed by,
Said, "Why not trust Jesus, until we die.
You know God won't pass us by--"
And they said, "I'll be alright!"

5. Remember Mary, mother of God,
The angel came with personal news & she was awed.
"The Holy Spirit will come upon you,
And a Son will be born, to make all things new."
Well Mary was young, but she said she could try--
Said, "I'm going to trust God until I die.
I glad He won't pass me by!"
Yes Mary said, I'll be alright!"

6. So if you have troubles, and trials, and pain,
You know Jesus came once, and He will come again.
He's always been faithful to show us His power,
Saving his saints, at the unlikely hour.
He wants you to call Him and let Him come by,
Say, "I'm going to trust God until I die.
I know my Jesus won't pass me by!"
Say, child, "I'll be alright!"

GOING HOME
By William J. Gaither and Gloria Gaither. Learned from the singning of Lynda Randle on "Timeless." Adapted, edited, arranged,
v. 3 © 2012 Susan O. Hinton for The Good News-Goodtime Band. For "graduates" passed.

1. Many times in my childhood
We'd travel so far...
By nightfall, how weary I'd grow.
Father's arm would slip 'round me...
So gently, he'd say,
"My child, we are going home."

REFRAIN:
Going home... I am going Home.
There is nothing that can hold me here.
For I've caught a glimpse of that heavenly land,
Praise God! I am going Home!
2. And as I grew up,
Well, I journeyed on,
That road looked so wide, and so long.
Discouraged and weary,
I leaned on His arm,
Till that day He would lead me home.

3. The twilight is fading...
The day soon shall end.
I get homesick the farther I roam;
But my Father has led me
Each step of the way,
And now, He will lead me Home.

DRAW ME NEAR
Learned from the singing of The Thomas Family Band on "The Condition of Your Heart." Adapted, edited, arranged, v. 4 © 5/25/14 2014 Susan O. Hinton for The Good News-Goodtime Band. Dedicated to Lisa Dodge and family.

1. I'm walking through this world of woe;
The Devil tries to bring me low.
His traps are scattered on the way
To take my joy, lead me astray,
To take my joy, lead me astray.

REFRAIN:
There will be trials on the way.
Out here the world wants to rule the day.
Not far away Your voice I hear;
I ask you Lord to draw me near.
I ask you Lord to draw me near!

2. Oh Lord, the road is rough and steep;
I ask you, please, to give me strength.
I ain't gonna let it get me down;
I'm walking toward that robe and crown.
I'm walking toward that robe and crown!
3. My pack gets heavy-burdened-down;
Satan wants to turn me 'round.
It'd be so easy to give in!
Help me Lord, this race to win;
Please Help me Lord, this race to win!

4. You promised, if I'd trust in Thee,
That someday soon, Your face I'd see.
I'm holding to those words You said,
I'll keep my eyes on the road ahead;
Help keep my eyes on the road ahead!

5. Oh, Gracious Jesus, take my hand,
And lead me to that promised land.
And with the angels I will sing:
"Hallelujah to the King,
Hallelujah to the King!"

I SING PRAISES
By Terry MacAlmon. Adapted, edited, arranged, © 2014 Susan O. Hinton for The Good News-Goodtime Band. Dedicated to Monica.

1. I sing praises to Your Name, O Lord, praises to Your Name, O Lord, for Your Name is great and greatly to be praised.

2. I give glory to Your Name, O Lord, glory to Your Name, O Lord, for Your Name is great and greatly to be praised.
(repeat, as led by songleader)

FAR SIDE BANKS OF JORDAN
By Terry Smith. Learned from the singing of John and June Cash on "O Lord How Great Thou Art, Vol. 2." Adapted, edited, arranged,
v. 3 © 2012 Susan O. Hinton for The Good News-Goodtime Band. Dedicated to Lillian.

1. I believe my steps are growing wearier each day; still, I've got a journey on my mind.
The lures of this old world have ceased to make me want to stay, and my one regret is leaving you behind.

2. But if it proves to be His will that I am first to cross, and somehow I've a feeling it will be.
When it comes your time to travel likewise, don't feel lost-- for I will be the first one that you see.

REFRAIN:
And I'll be waiting on the far side banks of Jordan. I'll be sitting, drawing pictures in the sand.
And when I see you coming, I will rise up with a shout,
And come running through the shallow waters, reaching for your hand.

3. I have loved each minute of this life that we have shared, and I will shed a tear to see it go.
But I know that in His house, a mansion's been prepared; when we move in, I know we'll love it so.

4. In this life we labor hard to earn our meager fare. It's brought us trembling hands and failing eyes.
So I'll just rest there on the shore and turn my eyes away until you come, then, and we'll see Paradise.

I'LL NOT BE A STRANGER
By James Singleton. Learned from the singing of Traditional Grass on "I Believe in the Old Time Way." Adapted, edited, arranged © 2014 Susan O. Hinton for The Good News-Goodtime Band. Dedicated to Joanne Niles.

1. I'll not be a stranger when I get to that city (I'm acquainted with folks over there).
There'll be friends there to greet me, there'll be loved ones to meet me, at the gates of that city foursquare.

REFRAIN:
Through the years, through the tears, they've gone one by one. But they'll wait at the gate, until my race is run.
I'll not be a stranger when I get to that city. I'm acquainted with folks over there.

2. I'll not be a stranger when I get to that city; I've a home on the streets paved with gold.
I will feel right at home there, in that beautiful somewhere, with the loved ones whose memories I hold.

3. I'll not be a stranger when I get to that city; there'll be no lonely days over there.
There'll be no stormy weather, but a great time together on the streets of that city foursquare.

NINETY NINE AND A HALF WON'T DO!
Learned from the singing of Mollie O'Brien and the Hopeful Gospel Quartet courtesy of Greg Hinton and The Mudcat Cafe. Adapted, edited, arranged, v. 4 © 2006 Susan O. Hinton for The Good News-Goodtime Band. Dedicated to Julia Kewitt.

1. It's a rugged, uphill journey, gettin' sanctified. I'm tryin' to make a hundred, or I won't be satisfied.
Paul says to run it, no matter how hard the race, I don't want to quit, or even take second place. So I'm...

REFRAIN:
... a-runnin'; I'm trying to make a hundred. Ninety-nine and a half won't do!
Seventy— that won't make it! Eighty— Trying to fake it? Ninety— that's not close! Ninety-nine is only almost!
If you're running & you're trying to make a hundred-- ninety-nine and a half won't do!

2. Once I got religion, I started my race. Want to see my lovin' God, someday face to face.
Till I got religion, didn't know just where to start; bound to make a hundred if I give my whole heart. Well I'm...

3. John the Baptist-- the foreunner of Christ-- they cut off his head, and then they took his life.
Death came a-sudden, in the guardsman's blade; John looked at him & smiled 'cause his a-hundred was made. He was...

4. He's called us, every one, to do a job for Him. He sees it perfect, finished— we see it mighty dim.
You got to hear his 'structions, to ever get it done, that's the only way the top prize can be won. Well I'm...

COME INTO THE HOUSE OF THE LORD
By Marty Stuart, Kenny Ray Vaughn. Learned from the singing of KennyVaughn on "Souls' Chapel." Adapted, edited, arranged
© 2014 Susan O. Hinton for The Good News-Goodtime Band. Dedicated to Mike Vetter.

REFRAIN:
Come into the house of the Lord; come into the house of the Lord! There's love overflowing,
A joy that you'll be knowing when you come into the house of the Lord; come into the house of the Lord!

1. I got a friend Named Jesus-- He's everything, yes indeed. In your darkest hour you can call upon His power
'Cause He knows everything you need-- every little thing you need.

2. I was adrift out in a desert; I led a shameful life of sin. But in my dissipation, I had a revelation:
A friend took my hand and led me in-- that's when my redemption did begin.

3. You don't have to preach like John the Baptist, prophesy like Apostle Paul. If you just step inside Jesus will provide
Love and salvation for us all-- love and salvation for us all.

4. This song (book) isn't perfect, any more than you or me. But once you let Him in you'll know He bought your sin.
And then you really can relax and see, living as a prisoner set free.

PRAISE THE NAME OF JESUS

2. I need Thee every hour, most Holy One; O make me Thine indeed, Thou blessèd Son.

3. I need Thee every hour, stay Thou nearby; temptations lose their power when Thou art nigh.

4. I need Thee every hour, in joy or pain; come quickly and abide, or life is in vain.

5. We need Thee every hour; teach us Thy will; and Thy rich promises in us fulfill.

WIND, WIND
Learned from the singing of Ed and Edith Vetter, who brought this song back from Cursillo.

REFRAIN:
Wind, wind, blow on me. Wind, wind, set me free. Wind, wind, the Father sent the Blessed Holy Spirit.

1. Jesus told us all about You, how we could not live without You, with His blood the power bought to help us live the life He taught.
2. When we're weary You console us, when we're lonely You enfold us, when in danger You uphold us, Blessed Holy Spirit.
3. When unto the Church You came, it was not in Your own but Jesus' Name. Jesus Christ is still the same, He sends the Holy Spirit.
4. Set us free to love our brothers; set us free to live for others that the world the Son might see and Jesus' Name exalted be.
(repeat, as led by songleader)

GIVE THANKS
Learned from the singing of Ed and Edith Vetter, who brought this song back from Cursillo.

Give thanks with a grateful heart, give thanks to the Holy One. Give thanks because He's given Jesus Christ, His Son.

(repeat, as led by songleader)

BY THE RIVERS OF BABYLON
Traditional. Learned from the singing of Sheri Easter. Adapted, arranged © 2014 Susan O. Hinton for The Good News-Goodtime Band.
Dedicated to the Campbell family.

By the rivers of Babylon, where we sat down, and there we wept, when we remembered Zion.
By the rivers of Babylon, where we sat down, and there we wept, when we remembered Zion.
Oh the wicked carried us away in captivity, required of us a song,
But how can we sing the Lord's song in a strange land?
So, let the words of our mouths and the meditations of our hearts be acceptable in Thy sight, O God!

HE IS HERE
By Kirk Talley. Learned form the singing of Wes Hampton and the Gaither Vocal Band on "Greatly Blessed." Adapted, arranged
© 2014 Susan O. Hinton for The Good News-Goodtime Band. Dedicated to Bryan and Kim Robinson.

1. I sense an awesome moving of the Holy Spirit, and I see His countenance resting on your face.
I know that there are angels hovering all around us, for the presence of the Lord is in this place.

REFRAIN:
He is here, Hallelujah! He is here, Amen! He is here, Holy, Holy; I will bless His name again.
He is here, listen closely; hear Him calling out your name.
He is here, you can touch Him; you will never be the same.

2. I searched for peace among the shadows, dark and lonely; gave up on finding that strong and lasting love.
I tasted all the things that sin could think to offer me, but today I feast on manna from above.

IN THE SACRAMENT ADORE
Tune: Traditional, after Doc Watson's "Christmas Lullabye." Words: Susan O. Hinton. Learned from the singing of Doc Watson. Adapted, arranged, text © 2014 Susan O. and Gregory P. Hinton for The Good News-Goodtime Band. Dedicated to Richard and Nancy Stoving.

1. I will rise and go to Jesus; in the Sacrament, adore. He is waiting for our treasures, at His feet to lay our store.

2. Mother Mary stands beside Him, loving first but knowing all. Pointing to His precious Glory, hearing Him so softly Call.

3. All the angels gather 'round Him, singing praise their timeless care; we but join our voices to them in the Kingdom we here share.

4. Low-lie are we to His beauty; lower yet came He to we. lower shall we stoop to find Him, till He finds us on our knees.

IF JESUS GOES WITH ME, I'LL GO
Rev. F.C. Barnes. Learned from the singing of Janice Brown and the Rev. F.C. Barnes on "Rough Side of the Mountain." Adapted, edited, arranged, v. 2-5 © May 28, 2014 Susan O. Hinton for The Good News-Goodtime Band.

1. When I'm weak; when I'm strong;
In a crowd, when I'm all alone--
If Jesus goes with me, I'll go.
As I travel on life's way
You will always hear me say:
If Jesus goes with me, I'll go.

REFRAIN:
If Jesus goes with me, I'll go.
If Jesus goes with me, I'll go.
When I'm weak; when I'm strong;
In a crowd, or alone--
If Jesus goes with me, I'll go.

2. On the land, on the sea,
If Jesus just goes with me,
If Jesus goes with me, I'll go.
Hear my cry, hear my call,
Hold my hand lest I fall--
If Jesus goes with me, I'll go.

3. Into danger, into strife,
Into something that may cost my life,
If Jesus goes with me, I'll go.
For His plan, and for His sake,
Great risk I will undertake--
If Jesus goes with me, I'll go.
4. When the path seems dark and dim
I will always follow Him--
If Jesus goes with me, I'll go.
When I don't know where to turn,
He will give new steps to learn;
If Jesus goes with me, I'll go.

5. When I'm tempted to wayward paths,
His guidance I shall ask,
If Jesus goes with me, I'll go.
When I question what to do,
I will ask, "Lord, which way for You?"
And if Jesus goes with me, I'll go.

6. When my health seems to fail,
And the pain seems to dwell,
If Jesus goes with me, I'll go.
And at the end I will rise
To the Kingdom of the skies--
If Jesus goes with me, I'll go.

ALL AROUND THE WORLD
Words & music by Seay. Learned from the singing of Seay via WLIH Radio. Adapted, edited, arranged © May 28, 2014 Susan O. Hinton for The Good News-Goodtime Band.
REFRAIN:
Let there be hope! Let there be joy! Let there be peace all around the world!
Let there be love, let there be life--let there be Light all around the world!

1. All around the world
There's a sound of people praying.
All around the world,
Let there be peace on earth.

2. All around the world
There's a sound of people singing.
All around the world,
Let there be light on earth.
3. All around the world
A time of hope, a time of blessings,
All around the world,
A joining with The One.

4. All around the world
In every heart in every nation--
All around the world,
His season has begun.

THE GIFT OF LOVE
Words: Hal H. Hopson; Music: Traditional English melody ("The Water is Wide"). Dedicated to Joan Zuchowski.

1. Though I may speak with bravest fire, and have the gift to all inspire,
And have not love, my words are vain, as sounding brass, and hopeless gain.

2. Though I may give all I possess, and striving so my love profess,
But not be given by love within, the profit soon turns strangely thin.

3. Come, Spirit, come, our hearts control, our spirits long to be made whole.
Let inward love guide every deed; by this we worship, and are freed.

4. A--men, a--men. A--men, a--men. A--men, a--men. A--men, a--men.

GOD ON THE MOUNTAIN
Tracy Dartt. Learned from the singing of Lynda Randle on "Timeless." Adapted, edited, arranged, v. 2 © 2014 Susan O. Hinton for
The Good News-Goodtime Band. Dedicated to the Rev. Janis Yskamp.

1. Life is easy, when you're up on the mountain, and you've got peace of mind, like you've never known.
But things change, when you're down in the valley. Don't lose faith, for you're never alone.

E D I T O R ' S   P R E F A C E

Greg and I have loved serving at St. Paul's/Wellsboro these last 20-odd years, and one of our favorite shared ministries has been the Saturday Night Service. We never thought, when we started by xeroxing a few songsheets, that we would end up producing any songbooks, much less Green, Christmas Blue, Advent Purple, Yellow, Pink, Orange, and Silver. How well I remember the excitement of finding and learning all those songs! And how sure I was that we had run out of colors for songbook covers, but also new songs worth the work of putting together another songbook. I was wrong, as I often am.
In April, 2014 (working on our Southern Ohio, "vacation-maybe-retirement" home), I fell into a deep well of new music. I brought enough home for a song-booklet like our other little books, and since a lot of it was of Bluegrass origin it made sense to make a blue song-booklet. Ed said, "But we already have Blue!!!" "We have light Blue," I replied. And we were off. The nice people at Tioga Office Supply even had (used and cheap) the binders
we would need. I took home a big 'un, and started filling it up with texts to adapt, edit, and arrange.
I knew at once that I'd want to add Ed and Mike's songs from their repertoires, and thought how handy it would be to have a real songbook for them to use while we vacationed. So the envisioned song-booklet became a songbook, Green-sized..... Maybe just "a little bigger." Greg's offertories you all know by now...
Then I "came across," in God's good time, a huge backlog of songs I'd found before-- but was never healthy enough to adapt, edit, and arrange. So… it got "a little bigger." (A few more I'd been scared to try....)
Some of the songs I brought back from Ohio (and some of the songs I'd saved up) were secular songs lending themselves to a Gospel interpretation. So it got "a little bigger."
Then one day the vision for the cover, in my mind, changed completely. This arose from two of God's hints I'd been pursuing for a long time... and one day, those two tracks converged:

One track is that every believer I know has had (and still sometimes has) doubts about our faith. These can come before we find the Lord, or before He finds us; and they can come in the midst of our faith journey, at any time. I give thanks that in the Episcopal Church we are given space to let God work these out in us. Some of the songs I've included reflect this, so the songbook got… "a little bigger."

The other track? Some of the songs reflect the diversity of God's people in ways that compel me to mention that ALL of His children are welcome at His table because if there is only one God, then we are ALL brothers and sisters. One Father-- One Family. I believe this is true of His entire creation, not only of the "saved" people some denominations "allow" which others "exclude." The cover of this now-pretty-big songbook reflects this, with its rainbow of hands reaching to Him.

A funny thing about this book is that for a long time, I'd felt like I was making our songbooks by myself. Eventually I learned how to ask for (and welcome) help. Thanks to all those who helped; you know who you are. Today I finally realized that the whole Communion of Saints, especially those who have "graduated" from our Saturday pews, have been with me all along. And of course Jesus has, too. So this "last" St. Paul's Songbook is dedicated to Jesus and the Communion of Saints.

Because I've been asked, so often, where our songs have come from, I've included as much information as I have, for as many of them as I could.

Love,

~Susan Oldberg Hinton

(BCP 1979)

O Gracious Light Phos hilaron
O gracious Light, pure brightness of the everliving Father in heaven, O Jesus Christ, holy and blessed! Now as we come to the setting of the sun, and our eyes behold the vesper light, we sing your praises, O God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. You are worthy at all times to be praised by happy voices, O Son of God, O Giver of life, and to be glorified through all the worlds. Amen. (Alleluia, except during Lent)

The General Confession (Officiant and People)
Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

The Sanctus (Celebrant and People)
Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest!

The Lord's Prayer (People and Officiant)
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as
it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom,
and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Prayer After Communion (People and Celebrant)
Eternal God, heavenly Father, you have graciously accepted us as living members of your Son our
Savior Jesus Christ, and you have fed us with spiritual food in the Sacrament of his Body and Blood.
Send us now into the world in peace, and grant us strength and courage to love and serve you with gladness
and singleness of heart; through Christ our Lord. Amen.
