26 Aug 14 - 12:28 PM (#3654300) Subject: RE: Folk in Whitby From: GUEST,Raggytash Hi Mo, No it's where old folkies come to die! I'm sure the existence of the festival has something to do with a number of folkies moving here over the years but it is a good place to live away, for the most part, from the troubles of the inner cities. Yes we do have our own "issues" to deal with like folkies who take over the town during folk week but by and large they're not insurmountable!! All in all it's a good place to live. The north sea on one side and the moors on the other make a very convivial location as I'm sure you and many other people realise. The Tuesday sessions in the Elsinore are great and the Wednesday sessions in the Fleece will surely catch up given a few weeks. |

13 Sep 14 - 04:02 AM (#3659813) Subject: RE: Folk in Whitby From: GUEST,Raggytash It is, but people must like diddly diddly. There might be one or two songs in a long session, great musicians for the most part though. |

18 Sep 14 - 03:33 PM (#3661594) Subject: RE: Folk in Whitby From: Mo the caller It's a fairly descriptive name for fast jigs. |
18 Sep 14 - 03:41 PM (#3661596) Subject: RE: Folk in Whitby From: GUEST Yes, if one can lilt in correct time!!???A jig , reel, hornpipe etc are surely played in the time suitable for a decent dancer, the timing and dancer are a unit. |
18 Sep 14 - 07:06 PM (#3661647) Subject: RE: Folk in Whitby From: GUEST,Raggytash Roisin, I had no intention to offend but how does ones describe the music. There are not just jigs, reels and hornpipes, there is a wonderful array of tunes, far beyond my comprehension. If that is your particular bent it is a superb afternoon. As I said there are some wonderful musicians attend, my individual attention span for that style of music lasts for between 30 and 40 minutes. It was not meant as a criticism. |
