Need help identifying song - tune is Cielito Lindo

Subject: Need help identifying song
From: GUEST,lora

My mum used to sing a really nice song but my brother and
I can only remember a couple of snippets from the chorus. They were "Aye, aye, aye, aye, sing bane sorrow....gladdens the morrow"

The tune is the Mexican song "Cielto Lindo" but the words are different.

I've spent hours on the net searching for it but no luck.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi, Lora - I added a bit to the thread title to make it a little more identifiable. I looked all over, and couldn't find your song. But maybe somebody else will help. Keep checking this thread over the next few days.

There are several poems from the 19th C that use the phrase "gladden the morrow" but none are a match to the phrases you mention. See if you can come up with anymore snippets of the lyrics?

In the 50s charts there was an English language version of the song which was very popular, but it may have just been called Ay, Ay, Ay, Ay. Worth looking through the chart hit lists for that period.

The only bits that I can remember are
'We go together like peaches and cream and we are most wonderful people.' It may have been translated from the Spanish.

The tune was so popular at one time in Britain that it was adopted as a football terrace chant and can still be heard on the terraces.

The snippet from the OP sounds like a (free) translation of the original lyrics. "Sing and don't cry" or "Sing, and you won't cry" would be the literal meaning. See Wikipedia.

I assume that you don't mean the song "Waltz Me Around Again Willie" which is just a string of limericks with a chorus between each.

Steve G - I think it may have been called "You, Me and Us". The chorus was something like:

You, me and us: those are my favourite people
We both go together like peaches and cream
Or bells and a church and a steeple.

Thanks to the collective memories of previous posters, more information came to light:
"Cielito Lindo is a popular traditional song of Mexico, written in 1882 by Quirino Mendoza y Cortes (c. 1859-1957) and arranged for the mandolin by John Hayes of East Sussex, UK. If the tune sounds vaguely familiar to you it was turned into a song and recorded by Alma Cogan" Tom Cunliffe on Mandolin ...which led me to an eBay listing for a 78:

The song is credited to John Jerome for both words and music, but undoubtedly only the lyrics were actually his creation."

You Me And Us ( 1957 ) Lyrics John Jerome Music 1882 by Quirino Mendoza y Cortes (c. 1859-1957) as sung by Alma Cogan

YOU ME AND US
(Lyrics John Jerome, Music 1882 by Quirino Mendoza y Cortes)

You, me and us
We are my favourite people
We all go together like peaches and cream
Or bells with a church and a steeple

Some people I know, I'm fond of and so
All day I keep singing about them
For one of them's you and, Darling, it's true
I find that I can't live without them

You, me and us
We are my favourite people
We all go together like peaches and cream
Or bells with a church and a steeple

The stars were as bright as diamonds the night
We met and we danced and we flirted
With one look at you, my dream had come true
And nothing will ever divert it

You, me and us
We are my favourite people
We all go together like peaches and cream
Or bells with a church and a steeple

Now, outside of town we all settled down
Our place isn't big, but it's cosy
I know that you're mine and ev'rything's fine
Our future forever is rosy

You, me and us
We are my favourite people
We all go together like peaches and cream
Or bells with a church and a steeple

Yes, we all go together like peaches and cream
You, me and us!

Great find, Maeve. I wonder how many other songs we can find to the tune of "Cielito Lindo."

Anybody have any luck finding "Aye, aye, aye, aye, sing bane sorrow....gladdens the morrow" ?

From Sierra Moreno cielito lindo comes softly ...
Laughing eyes black and roguish cielito lindo beauty revealing
aye aye aye aye
sing, bane sorrow
to pass the hours lightly singing cielito lindo gladdens the morrow

this is all I remember, i put dots instead of the words I don't recall. hope this helps!

In Scotland Cielito Lindo used to be very popular for football (soccer) chants - there must be dozens around, perhaps not written down.

Joe Offer: The name of this thread would be more intelligible if you used a dash instead of that hyphen. What's a song-tune?
