I'm still in a daze, got home today, slept for 6 hours, made & ate dinner, will probably go back to sleep now. Bill is falling asleep as I write, I do believe. This is the Folklore Society's 50th year in existence and as Caroline Paton said on Friday, it was Old Home Week. So many wonderful friends who have shared these weekends over the years and in a lot of cases, over the decades. And then there were the people who have never been to a Getaway before and we're all crossing our fingers in hopes they'll be back soon. As always, there were more magic moments than I have words to tell about -- at least until I get some sleep. Love to every single person I hugged this weekend, and to all the people I missed. Abby Sales and I agreed this morning, that if we had spent even 15 minutes talking to every person we really wanted to chat with, we wouldn't have gotten in any music at all! |

Fortunately, I have not had a heart attack. But I missed the Getaway!!! I gave some consideration to postponing surgery until after t he Getaway, but my better thinking said that I shouldn't play around with it. Mly doctor said it all went well, but I may need another stent in the future. Obviously, recovery for the Getawayers is taking some time. I would love to hear all of the stories. Roger in Baltimore |

After delivering Canadian beer to the Getaway silent auction we stocked up on American craft beer in Syracuse. There were lots of great performances and memorable moments and rather than list them all and risk leaving people out, I will just mention two: Sarah White's unaccompanied ballad at the Sunday night concert and Don Stallone leading the Monday morning survivors in the Seaman's Hymn at breakfast. Thanks for the old friendships renewed and the new ones made. |

Made me want to cry from 'homesickness' even before I drove away. Has anyone mentioned yet that CET is now a Doctor? Thanks to everyone who brought and bought auction items and who tossed a buck or five in the hat for the Mummer's play. If I remember Charlie Baum's announcement correctly at the Sunday night concert (and I may not) 14 people were able to attend this year's Getaway because of the scholarship fund. Deepest thanks to you FSGW folks for inviting us each year, and for doing all the work, nearly year round, that goes into creating what is really a sacred space musically speaking. Re-entry into 'fake' life is always hard after a weekend of folk music life. Roger, I kept looking for you to arrive and you were definitely missed - but I'm glad you made the choice you did. We don't need to lose anyone else this year. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you to one and all for adding your sparks of magic born of the love of the music and the lore. There were new faces this year that delighted, and more than a few faces that were missed by this old hillbilly. |

Because you know what is coming... There's arriving when you first see a face that you haven't seen in a year and the hugs that follow. How can you be in a place where the warm, welcoming and just plain amazing hugs are the norm and not counted... And the weekend music hasn't even begun.... more to come. Lisa's Vocal Clinic, first thing Saturday morning, was stunning. As usual Lisa was great. And she invited Larry Hanks, Debra Robins, Mai Hernon and Alaska Mike to talk about various aspects of singing. I think I learned more about singing the way I would LIKE to sing in this one workshop than in my whole life before. So much more. I sort of floated through the weekend after that great beginning. |

Will post more as I process. But one highlight was Don Stallone leading Napoleon Bonaparte at the Sunday night concert as it's never been done before; including jaw harp and drum accompaniment. That was utterly brilliant. I hope someone recorded it. As I did last year, after my brain settles and the first crash of reentry adjustment meltdown is over, I will post a list of all the songs that I can remember hearing this weekend on a new thread, with wildly incorrect titles and corrections welcome (though this year my husband will be able to help with the titles since he was there for his first Getaway and is better at, like, details and clarity and stuff. Roger, I'm very glad you got your stents in, and did miss you though. Several of your songs last year were highlights for me (Little Green Buttons on her Birthday Suit, for one). |

Heading from the retreat center Saturady night we were sure we were going to the cabin and to bed... It was after 1am after all, but someone had left a string of lights in the distance and wait,was that a faint song in the darkness beckoning for exploration ? So Tami and I, with the aid of her trusty flashlight, passed the last cabin and walked into the darkness. Only to be joined by Linda and her trusty drum. The campfire on the point continued... So we squeezed in with Dani and Janie, Joe Offer and EJ ...and burning embers glowed. We looked over the fire at Amos and pleaded for one more song. Now perhaps the stars and the bay lent a hand to our song choice, but the teen angels surely looked down as we remebered their pathos. We toasted once again and moved on to creative song choices over the glow,'til nearly sung dry we smothered the fire and headed back to our beds We joined our roomy and compared our days for another hour or so ( okay the fun police tried to stop us but the joy was flowing)....we just missed the dawn before we closed our eyes... |

At that point of the night? morning? it was a cozy group and the fire glowing embers and it fit my mood and the darkness allowed for the silly songs to come out, interspersed with beautiful ones; none I don't think of which I can remember! But it was all very jovial and convivial, and then as it got even later a light creature approached from the woods in a gently shambling manner; it turned out to be Joe who I guess had collected the light path and strung it about himself then returned for more songs. There were still several there singing when I wandered back to Peace. MMario, I really like the folk mash-up workshop idea. Also, I wonder if anyone has led a Townes workshop recently? |

When the Brigadoon glittering islands fades into the fog at the end of the weekend, you drive away with a head full of singing images, and colorful song sounds, and the echoes of laughter and greetings that could start all over again at the drop of the hat. Rooms full of people, singing songs in stunning improvised harmonies; dancing around a fire in a dark forest doing gospel songs; Dani leading the house into gales of laughter with her "Ballad of Siri and the Boyos"; Mai's enchanting Gaelic singing and the wild Cajun fiddling of Damina Boucher doing "Jolie Blonde"; Lonesome EJ doing his train song; and a thousand other plaintive, poignant, rousing and tempered voices threading together in a head-full of amazing moments. Safe travels to you all, and may we meet again in another year. |

That trip takes more and more out of me each year. But, two of my favorite women, Jacqui and Dani, ganged up on me and I was helpless to resist. Thank you both for talking me into it. If you are going through Port Jervis, avoid the Days Inn. The bed felt like it was stuffed with old Moose antlers, the coffee was not weak, it was helpless. However, the ROMA Italian restaurant was a real find. By the time we got to the Getaway, I was feeling quite unnecessary, but, that didn't last long. All of my favorite ladies made me feel welcome, and I have been assured that it's not the jacket! Amos, I too must say, this was the best Getaway of all. The food was much better, and the weather was gorgeous. A couple of highlights, I got to meet Larry Caplan, whom I have admired for years. My oldest best friend, Gordon took part in my Spoken word workshop. It's always a pleasure to work with him. It was great that he and his wife, Carol, were able to attend. Friday evening was a hoot,I forgot that I can no longer sing, but it sure was fun trying.When you have Amos, Big Mick and Sara Grey around you, you can't just sit there and absorb. Tinker saved my life again with her massage. My back is older than I am but she always brings it back to life. Thank you, Luv. We came away from home without my bedding, but another of my sweet ladies, Caroline Paton, had a quilt to spare. All I have to do is look helpless and what I need comes from somewhere every time. So many people that I like and admire were there, Gordon and Carol, Larry Caplan, Bob Zentz, Ed Trickett,Danny Black,Amos, Big Mick, I knew I shouldn't start this list, too many to count. There are many others, and YOU are among them. I'm still not "back to battery" so my head is not clear yet. I should go back to bed. Sorry about the length of this blather. |

I have to say that one of my favorite things about Getaway is getting to Getaway. Train travel (my favorite mode of travel), spending time with Tinker's family, food from Nauna's, and the one on one time with Tinker driving down to Getaway. Friday arrival: hugs, food, song, and renewing friendships. Saturday: gorgeous weather, more hugs, more music. Being called down to a small gathering by the water by the stains of Leave Her, Johnny played on concertina by Bob Zentz and Don Stallone and arriving just as the singing started to be welcomed by Mai sliding over and patting the bench beside her. Singing with Bob, Don, Jeanne, Mai, and the others drawn over by the music as I was. Listening with fascination as Don and Mai swapped their versions of that Napoleon song. Asking Bob to play Ocean Station Bravo and then having Mai sing The Last of the Great Whales to follow it. Wandering over to the same spot later in the day with Tinker to find Abby asleep on a bench and LEJ playing guitar and singing softly. Tinker and I joining LEJ in singing some of my favorite Neal Young and Johnny Cash songs. The late night after-the-concert session in the Retreat Center, wandering over to the fire with Tinker and Linda Goodman and finding Joe, Dani, Janie, LEJ, Amos, Heather, and Al Kehs there. Laughter and song until the wee hours there, and then heading to bed, only to continue to laugh and giggle with my roommates until we finally ran down at 4 AM. |

I drifted to the Peace Cabin to hear some beautiful harmonies done accapella by Rose, her son, the young Mr Day and Heather. Then, relaxed but eager for more, it was off to the Retreat center where Mick, Kendall, Amos and Mike were holding court, with a virtual KT dancing along to the music on a laptop screen. From there, Amos and I rambled off to the Campfire, singing loudly of the Boys of Bollyhobble. "They'll block yer hat and feed yer cat and never cause ye trouble and if vandals set yer home ablaze they'll be there on the double, they'll cut yer hair and give ye a shave and never leave no stubble, the finest lads in all the land are the Boys of Bollyhobble" After stumbling blindly into the sparkly lights on a hawthorne bush, we reached the campsite. There were Joe, Tami, Tink, Janie, and Dani standing around the glowing coals. I think we started on Moonlight bay, and maybe Shine on Harvest Moon, the Davey Crockett theme...I learned there was an actual limit to what was acceptable when I started in on Daniel Boone was a Man (yes a big Man)...and Amos looked at me and said "let's not get silly." Then the Teen Medley arrived, when the ladies began to sway in harmony and sing like the Shirelles. There were several songs concerning accidents on curves, railroad tracks etc in which the singer had to return to get a kiss, or his high school ring, or his letter jacket before the vehicle burst into flames. At last Amos gave out, I disgraced his D45 with a Stones song, then it was back to Peace, where the atmosphere was no longer calm accappella ballads, but a smoky mixture of Lucy and David tunes with some jazzier fare from John Hicks. Soon, fueled by Makers Mark, I added my country classics to the mix. Damian emerged, fiddle in hand, Ron showed up with viola, and at about 2:30, the Magic really kicked in. For me, it started when I did Fred Neil's Dolphins and I suddenly had this soaring string section backing me. The room began to vibrate in the peculiar way it does when it is very late and the music is very adventurous and just right and yet no one knows where it's going. We played until dawn, sang the sun up, went to bed at 8 and got about three hours sleep. Everyone seemed subdued and a bit tired, but we all exchanged smiles and brief words. Janie snapped my picture melting into the couch. Just another Saturday Night at the Getaway, and it came and went like a meteor over the Chesapeake. You had to be there... |

Without my notes: - The peculiar German pre WWII string-box thing and the story that went with it in Bob Zentz' instrument session. Same session, Bob on Hurdy-Gurdy and Jeanne sublime on recorder (she was rather splendid even without recorder). - Meeting people who are known names and voices face to face for the first time, like Bob Zentz & Anne Mayo Muir. Also putting faces and voices to Mudcat names. - Faces and voices of friends seldom seen, Caroline Paton, Carly Gwirtz... and the voices and humor of those long adored but seldom seen like Ed Trickett, Gordon Bok, and the wondrous Heather Wood (I've a vivid memory of the time when she was sitting in the Nature Center in such a way that the antlers from the beastie skull behind her looked like they came right out of her head!) Lots of time to talk and sing with Caroline - to the wee hours. - Folks heard and met for the first time - the lovely YOUNG lass who sang at the Irish session and Sunday night - oh, my, I look forward to what she'll do in the future (gotta look up her name in my notes) - Big Mick having us shaking with laughter as he told Irish festival musician stories. - Quiet time to talk with several people, both known and new, about music, faith, social justice, poverty & making do (from a personal point of view), the Great lakes in general and Cleveland in particular. - the astonishingly loud ruckus that the large flock of geese made at sundown. - the incredible bliss of being in a group of singers who would sing full-tilt on songs I'm used to singing alone at home, particularly when they'd join in on the chorus. I've so much gratitude for all the folks who got me to the Getaway, all the folks who so generously shared their beloved songs and stories. The solo drive home took 2 hours longer than the drive there - stops for naps seemed prudent for getting me home safely. The beauty of the travel through changing colors and the weekend's summer weather gave an extra depth to the bittersweet feeling of transience that such fleeting, intense events as the Getaway evoke for me. Summer is past, the Getaway is past, and I'm hoping the richness of memories of the experience can warm me through a winter threatening to be severe. Joanne back in Cleveland |

My head feels like it's stuffed with kapok. Amos did a really nice version of Saint Olaf's gate. Mai and her guitarist did a beautiful series of Irish songs. Dani brought the house down with her account of the trip with Joe, Amos and Abby. I think she should do more. The ability is surely there. Sara and her lovely banjo helped to make my evening. I love her singing and playing.Mike, that song you did about the treatment of the native Americans gave me chills. Great job. I gave the words to David Mallett's song Phil Brown to Amos and Big Mick. This year was......magical. After a hard summer all of you there gave me beauty and love and silliness, just what I needed. I would like to share one moment that will stay with me the rest of my days. I was walking to my cabin at some early hour before the dawn, when a voice from Peace cabin soared out into the night air and stopped me in my tracks. The beautiful clear voice of a young singer new to the Getaway, Sarah White, sang out the same version (and possibly in the same key!) of "Over The Water To Charlie" that Merle and I had sung at our first Getaway in ( good lord!) 1971. I felt such joy, and certainty that this music that we all cherish will go on long after I am gone, and wistfulness that Merle was six states away, and satisfaction in the knowledge that all the stuff that happens to make the Getaway happen is well worth it, and awe at all the wonderful people who have come into my life through this music (many of whom I met at a Getaway.) All this from one song! Magic, indeed! |

Worth it, though! Thanks to all who came to the 2014 FSGW Getaway! It really is the people who make it what it is. What a terrific bunch of folks! I was particularly happy to see Max -- it's been a while! I was struck by the number of parent/child units we had this year: Sara Grey/Kieron Means, Rose Sheehan/Colin de la Barre, Ann Muir/Christina Muir (briefly), Bill Day & Rita Ferrara/Darriel Day, Pete & Grace Kraemer/Will Kraemer, Annie Storr/Jesse Greer, Janice Cole/Eric Cole, Glenn Lehman & Alice Van Buren/Nathaniel & Bea Lehman, and -- of course -- me/Dan Schatz and HIS son Kiran Schatz. I think this means we are doing something right! Several people have mentioned Sarah White, who absolutely electrified everybody with her beautiful voice and excellent presentation. She's about 20 years old, never been to the Getaway before, but saw the publicity for it (FSGW Newsletter?) and decided to come by herself. I sure hope we'll see more of her -- she's a real treasure. We just handle the logistics. But then, we don't have to drive so far. It all works out. Haven't made my count yet this year, but for the last couple of Getaways our attendees have been about 50% local and 50% from away. Makes for a real good mix. Dani, thank you so much for posting your song! Now I can catch all the little nuances I missed before. I think maybe one of these years we should have a workshop on songs people have written about the Getaway. We would probably have more than we'd have time for, considering all the laughing we'd have to fit in. Roger -- I meant to say before -- So very glad your procedure went well, and trust you're feeling pretty good by now. We definitely missed you (I heard "Mama Fried" in connection with your name more than once), so make sure you get here next time around. Bill, you really do need to get going on that cloning workshop. Reading all the memories here and seeing all the pictures here and on FB have made me realize how much I missed! Well, we work on the better-too-much-than-too-little model, and sometimes it makes for some hard choices. Lots of fun singing a few old favorites (my own "Donuts Donuts" in the Retrospective and "Through a Child's Eyes" in Jewish Songs; Frank Hayes' "When I Was a Boy" in Humorous Songs) and a couple of new things (like "Highway 66 Blues" in Peace Cabin on Saturday night). Great to see the Getaway Gang again. Especially great to have Big Mick and Alaska Mike back raising the West River rafters. I hesitate to mention any one person. However, over the past few years I have fallen in love with the versatility of Rose Sheehan, not to mention her warmth. She alone, or with her son, sing beautiful trad ballads, and she can also belt out a blues, roots or swing tune in the finest manner! And she has found the perfect partner for some of those gutsy tunes in John Hicks. Own aspect of the Getaway I appreciate beyond measure is so many people who are fine, accomplished musicians and vocalists appreciate being in the middle of a bunch of people there for the love of the music, and listen and encourage anyone else. Tain't about performing. Tis about joining together. I found my voice again at the Getaway, starting 14 years ago, and while never was or would have been a great singer or musician, my voice developed, and I was motivated to develop it beyond what I knew or had the confidence was possible. I have since lost it again for unclear medical reasons and can barely croak out a song, and then only occasionally. But the magic of the space goes beyond any one voice or any one person's musicality. Even mouthing the words on a chorus in a whispered voice fills the heart and soul with gladness and a sense of belonging and sharing in our common humanity. Because I have been going so long, I think, I also occasionally will croak out something I know is hard to listen to, and feel respected for making the effort, and validated when people join in the chorus (if they can manage the basement key.) The Getaway (meaning the collective presence of close to a couple of hundred people with common purpose to simply be joyfully together in celebration of what folk music brings to each of our lives empowers the music in every person's soul to be released and revealed. That is true magic. Don't mean to be smarmy, but thank you to each and every person who shows up. |

So many great workshops and not enough time! Some I wanted to get to but ended up taking a nap and missing out - got to do something about warding off sleep until the weekend is over. Catching up, even for only a short time, with all my Getaway friends and hearing so much good music makes the journey down from Maine really worthwhile. A special thanks to the Mummers Play performers. That was such fun! You all did amazingly well and I think everyone on the stage had as much, or even more fun, as the audience. Courtesy of iPad I was able to let Claire join in on part of the proceedings and having KT there via Skype was wonderful. Technology, used in the right way, can do great things. This was my 11th Getaway, the first being, effectively, our honeymoon and so this gathering has an extra special meaning for me. I will always remember how welcome I was made back then and what an experience it was to be part of such an event. I must add my thanks to the Getaway committee who work so hard to get this all up and running. I guess, sometimes, it must feel a bit like herding cats, but the end result is a blissful weekend in a beautiful location. Looking forward to next year already............ |
