BS: Trash TV

What are your guilty secrets? We all know terrible TV is bad for your brain but rather like junk food it can be somehow, horribly entertaining. Right now I've stumbled onto one such horrible form of trash TV entertainment called "My Fat Obnoxious Fiance" which is funny purely for the fact of the 'fiance' (an actor) being an obtuse dork and the money-hungry bland humourless contestant being essentially herself.

Anyone want to share their guilty trash TV temptations?

I watch "Strictly Come Dancing". As a red-blooded boy I enjoy the long legs etcetc (the girls are bonny too!), I must admit to admiration for those who don't win but seem to master the steps. Snobbily I can't abide TOWIE etc and almost any "reality TV". Keep Dancing.

My spouse watches quite a bit of the TV junk, including so called reality programs and Coronation Street daily (I often ask her why she is interested in the boring the lives of British people? :).

While we subscribe to many Cable TV channels, I dont watch much of it-not even the sports, except for Boxing, which I understand many folks find distasteful.

""Is there some part of TV, however miniscule, that isn't trash?""

Possibly elements of the local daily weather forecast, though it is mostly available on the internet?

I get a kick out of the tv traffic reports-as if folks watch tv while driving their car in rush hour:)

Quiz programmes for me. Did once go on Fifteen to One, but fell at the first fence. ("The questions are really easy if you know the answers" - I got 2 in a row that I didn't know!) Weakest Link, Eggheads, Mastermind, even Pointless and Perfection had/have me captivated and shouting at the TV screen. I do draw the line at John whatisname and that Pressure cooker game!
There will be many in Scotland with NO TV since the referendum, having cancelled their licences in protest against what they saw as biased reporting by the BBC,

Project Runway, which is partly about sewing, at leat that's what I tell myself. It's a contest to see who can design the best outfit each week. There's a a lot of foolishness about the designers being catty about each other, which takes away from the fun stuff about fabric, and design.

We used to have some wonderful drama on TV, remember the Wednesday Play series, and the Play for Today.

Suppose it all boils down to money, but I still remember how much I was affected by "Cathy come Home" "Yorkie" "Clay, Smeddum and Greenden" by Grassic Gibbon, Bleasdale's "Boys from the black stuff", Dennis Potter's "Pennys from Heaven", "Nuts in May"......anyone remember Candice Maree?

All and any Law and Order / Bones / CSI / NCIS / all day long on several channels so I never see commercials.

I often watch the British motoring show, 'Top Gear'. I have no interest in cars whatsoever (these days I don't even drive due to health problems). By all normal standards TG is a disgrace - silly, irreverant and politically incorrect ... but it does make me laugh - it's so outrageously 'laddish' and stupid! If I mention it to some of my friends, I am usually greeted by a shocked silence or gasps of horror.

Stilly, I don't think you're quite getting into the spirit of the thread.. ;-)

Mr. likes Top Gear for the laddish stupidity, and also for the deliberately naughty non-PCness, which reminds me of a child saying 'bum' a lot.

I saw an episode of Naked and Afraid, I might try another one just to figure out why the hell these people want to do it? The one I watched wasn't so much about 'survival' as 'slowly dying of starvation', just as well they got pulled out after 21 days really.

I have watched Strictly and X Factor in the past, though no longer. I'm rather more fascinated by bizarre and horribly exploitative US productions. I can't say I'd watch that kind of thing everyday, but occasional dips into the bottom of the barrel can be strangely compelling o.O

The programs I like and watch aren't guilty pleasures. There isn't anything I can think of on TV that I watch that I consider something to generally be quiet about because it's somehow so odd or trashy or whatever that I wouldn't share with others that I enjoy it.

There are programs that I consider colossally stupid. Some folks are naming their favorite high-calibre programming - I doubt they consider them "guilty." I picked up part of your premise, CS. I identified what I consider to be trash TV. I just don't waste my time watching it. Now if you had asked only for "guilty pleasures," you might have gotten a different answer from several of us.

I think modern TV comedy is the worst, brutish, foul, appealing to the lowest common denominator, always delivered to a baying audience of idiots.

Does the great British public really think that cursing or talking about sex in the most gross detail is remotely funny?

Or are we being "groomed" by the media?

That was certainly a dog leg in the conversation.

"Reality television" is supposedly much cheaper to produce because there is a lot less scripting and they don't need to hire real actors. Since the target is the lowest common denominator, there are all sorts of reasons why this is a great waste of air time.

Assuming what is titled as such, is totally unscripted, and involve those who are not promped, in one away or another, as actors (grade b, c or otherwise) would be? I suspevt defining what us and is not scripted woukd be complex. Editing oodles of footage to make a program "entertaining" can, I suspect, be taxing, and expensive.

Those re-runs of English mystery series are the brighter spots.

When I flip around the channels, there seem to be a lot of shows wit ghosts, hauntings, zombies, etc. but all snooze-fare. None of the old classics.

Hey, nobody has mentioned Monday Night Football. Or the Sunday Football.

I have vision problems, and flickering, fast moving video bothers me. But I do like to go on YouTube and watch old TV variety shows, such as Danny Kaye, Dean Martin, Bing Crosby and the like.

The shows are lively, but they're peaceful somehow, because they don't flicker and flash.

I almost forgot to mention my favorite guy - Donald O'Connor!

Quite a bit here about shows not being as good as they used to be.

I don't watch much telly, never have. Although my addiction to Top Gear, Wheeler Dealers etc belies my acceptance that I too watch some telly, and to be fair, yes, its trashy ish..

However, on the very odd occasion I see something from say, the '70s being rerun and think "I used to enjoy that," I often find that it is more a case of me accepting less trash rather than today's programmes being worse. I used to watch some cheesy shit, judging by some of the re runs..

Television has cleaned up its act over here. There is far less TV that is boorish or inflammatory. Back in the '70s we had sit coms such as Love Thy neighbour, all about a bigot hating a black neighbour and call it comedy. We had disgraceful stains on light entertainment such as the "comic" Bernard Maning, rattling on about "Pakis" and "nig nogs" and jokes about how to hate them. Television has cleaned up its act in many ways.

is it better? Well, in the '60s, it was all Dr Who, talent shows and err....

Oh bollocks.

Trash TV? The Bread-and-Circuses of the New Neronic Age. And there I was thinking it was named for Boy George...come to think of it, can't think of a single transvestite folkie.

Still, when the Welsh refugees of Patagonia run David Cameron's mate out of town with several thousand in hot pursuit, I know there is yet one place in the world with some common sense.

And bloody Maning still hasn't paid me for the Sumo joke he nicked. It was credited to me, guess he must have thought I was long dead, the company I'm alongside.

Some folks like to tell people that they don't watch TV. I think it makes them feel good about themselves. Strange that when I vist these people, they have a TV in their main living room. Some even have two (or even more) TVs. I do know a few households that have no TV, but the average Canadian household has more than two.

Our household has a TV and my wife and I watch "Blue Bloods" together.
We really miss shows like "Fire On The Mountain", "Nashville North",
Connie Kaldor's "Wood River Hall", "At The Ryman"...

I guess my guilty pleasure when it comes to TRASH TV would have to be "Trailer Park Boys". I really enjoy it, but it must be the uncensored version.

Bernard Manning on Caroline Ahern's Chat show, being given stick by Caroline for "racist" jokes.

Bernard..."why don't you come to one of my shows and see for yourself?"
Caroline...."if I was at a show and you came on, I would get up and walk out!!"
Bernard...Oh Christ, don't do that lass....you're Irish....when you leave, EVERYBODY leaves!!!    Now that's funny.

Revenge is mine. Soapy plots (longlost kids, disputed parentage, implausible wealth) dreadfully overwritten dialogue "I have gubernatorial aspirations". Houses that seem to maintain themselves with no housework or housekeepers. People in danger but anyone can walk into their houses. Instant recovery from life-threatening injuries but... I have a soft spot for actress Emily Vancamp trying to rise over all the tosh, she makes her charater almost believable.

It seems that most of the programs these days seem to be presented in such a trashy way whether it is a reality show or so called variety. Recently I have been watching Mr.Selfridge because the topic the program seemed so promising showing the rise of the departmental store and the quality of retail service of a bygone age. It has also acted as a bit of a catwalk for women's clothes of that era from the sales assistants to the 'upper' classes and I found it fascinating looking at all the outfits and wishing that feminine style and sumptuous materials would come back. I do wonder if the staff would have been treated as well as that back then in reality though.
