George Orwell's Room 101 is a place that holds your worst fear, to be used against you when the system wants to coerce you into conforming to its wishes. The TV programme, on the other hand, treats it as a place to banish your worst fears, never to be seen again. I would have thought that the best things to send into Room 101 would be those that you really like but pretend that you hate. With a bit of accomplished acting and a few crocodile tears, you could have a whale of a time and get one over on the system. DC |

Speaking for myself, I make a dry rub for brisket, made from Demerara sugar, paprika, crushed garlic, salt and pepper. Wrap in cling film and leave overnight. Cook in the bottom of the aga for at least six hours, having given it all of 20 mins in the top oven, and have a small amount of stock in the bottom of the lidded casserole pot to prevent it drying before it's own juices take over. About half an hour before eating, take it out, drain off the stock to make a gravy and rest it on top of the aga with foil over it. The gravy is quite stunning, with the slight sweetness from the sugar and the kick from the paprika and garlic. If you tenderise meat, try buying a better cut instead or in the case of brisket, slow cook it longer and in all cases rest it more. It started out by fancying Nigella Lawson and went from there I suppose. |

22 Oct 14 - 08:56 PM (#3671394) Subject: RE: Room 101 From: Tattie Bogle Well if you're ever in Dublin and book to stay in the Parliament Hotel, just ask for Room 101 - it is absolutely MASSIVE! We were there a few years back with daughter, son-in-law, son and ourselves, and booked 2 ordinary rooms, but D + S-I-L got room 101. Apart from a king-size bed it had a conference table and numerous chairs around it. Our son was supposed to be in our room, but went out on the razz in his tatty jeans, forgot his room key, and therefore very nearly failed to get into the hotel again late night. Only when son-in-law went down to plead with night porter to let the toe-rag in, and he spent the night on the floor of Room 101! |
23 Oct 14 - 03:27 AM (#3671429) Subject: RE: Room 101 From: Musket Tattie Bogle's story reminds me. I recently did some work where I was given an office for when I needed it. I was pleasantly surprised to have one, as they didn't need to really. The offices had inventory numbers for estates purposes and the reason why the office was empty was that it was always the last one to be claimed. Room 101. Presumably used normally to drop a hint to an over promoted director. Hence free for outsiders to use.. Oh hang on. Nearly forgot. 🏨 |
