From: Jim Dixon

I'm working my way up to the Rufus & Ben Quillan version; I thought I'd get some easier versions out of the way first. I realize these may not be the same song at all, just songs that happen to have the same or similar titles.

ALL IN, DOWN AND OUT BLUES (2:31)
As recorded by Uncle Dave Macon, 1937.

1. It is hippity hop to the bucket shop.
I lost all my money and now I have flopped.

CHORUS: It's hard times, pitiful* boy.
It's hard times, when you down and out.

2. Well, this is the truth and it cert'nly exposes,
Wall Street proposition was not all roses.

3. I put up my money to win some more.
I lost all I had and it left me so sore.

4. I thought I would drink to wear it off.
Bootleg so high that it left me worse off.

5. If they catch you with whiskey in your car,
You're handicapped and there you are.

6. They'll take you to jail and if you can't make bond,
Content yourself there, boy; you're cert'nly at home.

7. I've got no silver 'n' I've got no gold.
I'm almost naked and it done turned cold.

8. You ask that judge to treat you well.
You're all(?) for a hundred dollars, he'll send you to Atlanta.

*
The above recording appears on the albums:
"Hooked on Country Classics, Vol. 10"
"Hooked on Country Classics, Vol. 38"
"Legends Series Presents: The Voice of the Century, Uncle Dave Macon"
"Poor Man's Heaven: Blues and Tales of the Great Depression – When the Sun Goes Down Series"
"The Very Best of Uncle Dave Macon"

The following shorter version (1:11) appears on "Uncle Dave at Home."
*

1. It is hippity hop to the bucket shop.
I lost all my money and now I have flopped.

CHORUS: It's hard times, pitiful* boy.
It's hard times, when you down and out.

2. I've got no silver 'n' I've got no gold.
My clothes all ragged and it done turned cold.

3. Catch you with whiskey in your car,
You're handicapped, and there you are.

4. You ask that judge to treat you well.
You're all(?) for a hundred dollars, he'll send you to Atlanta.

* "Pitiful" is somewhat ambiguous; Steve James on "American Primitive" sings "pity poor boy", and Hesperus & Mike Seeger on "Crossing Over" sings "ain't it, poor boy?"

DOWN AND OUT BLUES
As sung by Jimmy Liggins and his Drops of Joy, on "Rough Weather Blues, Vol. 2" (from 1951)

{When/Yes} I woke up this mornin', I was all down and out. (2x)
My friends was all gone, and my money'd done run out.

[Yes,] I went to see my baby to try and get me a place to stay. (2x)
She said: "You all down and out; please don't bring your troubles this way."

[Yes,] I'm 'o' start out walkin' but I ain't got nowhere to go. (2x)
I thought of goin' back home, but mother, she don't live there no mo'.

Yes, I'm down and out; I ain't got nobody to turn to. (2x)
Oh, but if mother was just livin', Mother, nobody could take the place of you.

DOWN AND OUT BLUES
As sung by Scrapper Blackwell, 1928, as heard on "Scrapper Blackwell, Vol. 1 (1928-1932)" (Document Records, BDCD-6029)

Nobody knows you when I'm down and out. (2x)
If I ask them for a favor, they don't know what it's all about.

When I's down and in trouble, ev'rybody forsaken me. (2x)
Nobody knows the trouble that I did see.

When you down and out, you ain't got a friend in town. (2x)
And when I get money, they begin to come around.

Yeah, if you show ... have plenty money, too. (2x)
Someday I'll have money, and be up to date like you.

The sun's gonna shine in my back door someday. (2x)
I'm down and out now, but I won't be down and out always.

DOWN AND OUT BLUES
As sung by Jimmy Mesene on "Hits of the 1930s Vol. 1"

Got the blues; got the blues.
I've got the lonesome down-and-out blues.

When you're tired, lonesome, walkin' around the town,
And the rain comes uninvited in your shoes,
What are you going to say? What are you going to do?
Sing the down-and-out-blues.

All you possess in this great big world
Is an appetite that you're tryin' your best to lose.
What are you going to say? What are you going to do?
Sing the down-and-out blues.

§. When your dreams and schemes have gone astray,
And your pals and girls have left you on your own,
Laugh and the world laughs with you;
Weep and you weep alone.

What can you do? Where can you go to?
Beggars cannot choose,
Tired, lonesome, walkin' around the town,
Singin' the down-and-out blues.

[REPEAT FROM §.]

* Al Bowlly also recorded this, with Sid Colin and The Lew Stone Band. His recording can be heard on "By the Old Oak Tree." Flanagan & Allen also recorded this; it can be heard on "Greatest Hits."

DOWN AND OUT BLUES
As sung by Kokomo Arnold on "Kokomo Arnold, Vol. 2 (1935-1936)" (Document Records, DOCD-5038)

Says I ain't got no airplane; I ain't got no automobile.
I ain't got no money; I guess I have to rob and steal,
CHORUS: For when I wake up in the mornin', I can't eat a decent meal.
I had bad luck in my fam'ly; I guess you know just how I feel.

When I had money and plenty clothes,
These Chicago women followed me ... close(?).
CHORUS: Now when....

Says I asked my mama to take me back once more.
She said: "You ain't got no money, sweet papa; there is the door."
CHORUS: So when....

Now my women standin' on the corner with they weekly pay.
If they think I want to borry somethin', they turn and go another way,
CHORUS: For when....

When I make this payday and get my money in my hand,
You womens needn't come runnin'; just go and find you 'nother man.
CHORUS: For when I wake up in the mornin', I'm sure gon' eat a decent meal.
I been had bad luck in my fam'ly; now you know just how I feel.

SPOKEN: Ride it, Jackson! Get on it! Step on it, boy!

From the sheet music at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro:

ALL IN DOWN AND OUT
(Sorry I Ain't Got It, You Could Get It, If I Had It.)

Words by R. C. McPherson (Cecil Mack); music by Smith and Johnson and Elmer Bowman.
New York: Gotham-Attucks Music Pub. Co., ©1906.

1. I had a friend I thought was true,
But I've found out friends won't never do.
It seemed to me so awful strange
To get refused 'bout a little change.
Now this was all I said to him:
"Please lend me ten cents, won't you, Jim?"
It made me just as blue as blue could be,
To have my very best friend say to me:

CHORUS: Sorry I ain't got it; you could get it if I had it,
But I'm all in, down and out.
I could send you to a friend who'd be very glad to lend you,
But he's all in, down and out.
When I had money, I was crazy to lend,
But if I ever get my hands on a dollar again,
I'm goin' to hold onto it; it's your only friend
When you're all in, down and out.

2. I went and told my old friend Joe
What Jim had said the day before.
Said Joe to me: "Well, I'll be blamed
If that ain't a doggone measly shame!
Why didn't you come right down to me?
I could have lent you 'bout a "V."*
Of course I've got a few dollars left, you see,
But I couldn't spare a dime of that to NOBODY.

3. The moral here is plain to you:
If you ain't got, you can't get; "dat am true!"
The friends you had when you bought wine
Are hard to reach when you need a dime.
Don't figger on what you might "git."
You're only sure what's in your "mitt."
Don't be so keen to always go and lend,
'Cause you're li'ble for to lose both your money and friend.

---
* "V" probably refers to a 5-dollar bill. Bills were once printed with Roman numerals.

YouTube has 3 copies of recordings by Arthur Collins:

Edison cylinder 9492, issued 1907 (2:14)

Another copy of the same

Subject: Lyr Add: ALL IN DOWN AND OUT (Rufus & Ben Quillian
From: Jim Dixon

My transcription is full of holes, but I think this is the best I can do. Everything here should be regarded as uncertain.

ALL IN DOWN AND OUT
As sung by Rufus & Ben Quillian, a.k.a. Blue Harmony Boys, 1929.

SPOKEN: Now if Brother Jackson will step from the back of the church and give me authority to buy him a drink of liquor, I'll forgive him for puttin' that ten-cent piece in the collection box last Sunday mornin' that had a hole in it.

Thank you, Brother Jackson, thank you.

Now children, I'm going on till I tell you how Nicodemus found out how he had to be saved. It was way back yonder in them good old Bible times when Pharaoh used to run a little grocery store. One morning, when Pharaoh was behind the counter, when Nicodemus walked in.

Pharaoh says: "What do you want, Nicodemus? Do you want some of my three-day-old home brew?"

Nicodemus says: "No, Pharaoh; I don't want none of your three-day-old home brew."

So Pharaoh says: "What do you want then, Nicodemus?"

Nicodemus says: "Pharaoh, I want to know how to be saved."

Pharaoh says: "Nicodemus, you must be born again."

And Nicodemus jumped up into the air, clapped his heels nine times, he got down, grabbed a ham and three loaves o' bread and flew. And Pharaoh ain't seen Nicodemus since. Praise the Lord!

The congregation will now join in and sing "All In, Down and Out."

VERSE: I had an old friend that I thought was true,
But I found out that my friend won't do.
... money comin' down the street
Nothin' could 'a' been ... than my friend to meet.
I asked him to loan me one thin dime,
But at the same ... that he'd do all the time.
Ain't it a doggone ... shame,
... on the way to the game.

CHORUS: Sorry I ain't got it; if I had it, you could get it,
But I'm all in, down and out.
I would send you to a friend who'd be more than glad to lend you,
But he's all in, down and out.
Once I had a dollar, I was ready to spend,
But if I ever get my hands on a dollar again,
I'm gonna hold right to it 'cause it's my last friend
All in, down and out.

REPEAT CHORUS.
