Bootleg Beatles at Beverley Folk Festiva

Subject: Bootleg Beatles at Beverley Folk Festival?
From: GUEST,Sidewinder.

After Chas and Dave this year, it has now been announced that the Bootleg Beatles will be playing a "warm up gig" for the Beverley Folk Festival. As a massive Beatles fan; this is great news! Wonder what the "Folkies" of a traditional persuasion make of this development?

Regards

Sidewinder.

The Bootlegs are great although I preferred their previous 'George Harrison' who adhered more to the real Beatles, visually, instrumentally and in personality.

Chas and Dave have more to do with Folk than Beatles. IMNSHO.

I go through phases...

A few years complete indiference to the Beatles, then something might set me off
on rediscovering all the best things that I used to like about them...

Recently that was the Lennon Bio movie "Nowhere Boy" (2009)
concentrating on the teenage banjo & skiffle years..

and the Hi Def remastered "Hard Days Night"...

[what a great movie double bill]

Bootleg Beatles is better than no beatles, if yer in the mood...

Beatles may not be 'folk' but they are definitely 'heritage'...

Cheshire has the Fab 3, who perform in folk clubs (when not doing other folky things with other performers), and no-one says they shouldn't.

I do remember having a long discussion, with some purist folkies, many years ago. About; whether, or not, "Norwegian Wood" should be considered the best folk song ever written. Suffice to say; it didn't end well.

The festival organisers can book who they like and the customers can vote with their wallets.

From my own point of view, I am thinking of getting to more festivals now that I have retired but if Beverley is being turned in to a generic music festival rather than a folk festival then its one that I will pass on.

Doesn't it depend on the balance of acts, rather than just 1. Chester Festival often has a 'musical nostalgia' slot '50s / Beatles /music hall etc, but that's not the whole story and there are other things on at the same time.

If my money is paying for it, I choose the integrity of the event. That includes the integrity of the organisers. If Chris Wade is still running it she is very definitely a folkie, but a commercial realist. It still begs the question of what the event is called. Put the word folk in the title and there are expectations. Put the word "music" (or heritage) instead and we would know where it is heading.
If the pre-festival concert is a separately paid-for event then I would have no quarms about attending, and not paying for not folk. I do it with Towersey, and Sidmouth.
Beatles ain't folk they is commercial. Bootleg Beatles is copy commercial.

Is this the Crpredy effect? Where headliners have to be overpaid and obsolete pop bands? Thinking Ub40and Alice Copper of late.

integrity...................!

why do people who assume that working musicians have no integrity?

supppose its inevitable - 9 to fivers cast envious eyes at the apparent freedom of the gypsy lifestyle of pro musos. assume superiority because we have to please an audience - whereas the hobbyists can stick to their artistic vision of folk music.

but actually there is an integrity in going out and trying to divine what will please a roomful of strangers - folks, shall we say. by and large you get an honest and sometimes a brutally honest reaction.

in comparison, many folk clubs are quite indulgent - forgiving of people forgetting lyrics, inability to tune, etc. can these hobbyists claim to have approached their music with more integrity than even the bare minimum of competence that pro musicians employ.

Sidewinder said, in the original posting that it's a "warm up gig" for the Beverley Folk Festival. I've not been to Beverley for many years, but perhaps this is in the nature of the pre-festival events at, for example Sidmouth and Towersey, which are not necessarily intended to be folk gigs. Indeed, the Bootleg Beatles were at Towersey in August. A good night , a fun gig, it was before the festival started (though attracted a lot of festival goers) and did not compromise the integrity of the festival. Likewise Pam Ayres, Acker Bilk etc at Sidmouth's pre-festival events in recent years. If it helps to (a) bring in some extra cash and (b) attract a local audience who may not otherwise attend the "folk" festival - but expose that audience to the festival's venues - then ... why not?

This begins to sound like another list where we get coughed at if we talk about any dance form that is not Ceilidh.
To my mind dance is dance, and those who enjoy one form may well enjoy others and there will be crossfertilization, though we'll have our favourites.
And the same with music and musicians. I don't know about the Bootleg Beatles, but in Cheshire there are a bunch that at one moment will be playing something from Playford's English Dancing master (1651) at another performing in the Fab Three, or singing Musichall or Fifties songs, or playing traditional tunes for ceilidhs. Drawing on their development as musicians to connect with our personal history.

I wonder how the Beatles would feel about being (a) used to bring in extra cash and (b) to expose a local audience to a folk festival? I recall them being quite precious about how their music was going to be utilised in the future.

Apple have been, and as far as I know still are, highly defensive of the original recordings.

They obviously can't stop anyone singing the songs though. Nor, I imagine, would they wish to.

There are a lot worse Beatles songs than Yellow Submarine and obviously hundreds of better ones. All, one day, will probably pass into the realms of Folk.

These big name acts are there to attract funding and put bums on seats. The local yuppies will pay the inflated prices and down gallons of booze. Only drawback is if they put decent folk acts on the same concert the yuppies talk loudly all the way through and keep getting up to go to the bar in the middle of songs. The festival itself is still very much grass-roots folk and it works and it's not going down the pan. All power to Chris's elbow. I can't believe I wrote that!

I figure a large percentage of Beatles songs could now be claimed to be Folk Songs. As, they are widely performed in Folk Clubs around the world.

Richard - I agree. I knew them (sort of) back in the ,pool as the Huyton Quarrymen and they did a couple of gigs at a mates dad's pub. Noisy & definitely not folk. They just happened to be in the right place etc. There were far better musicians and groups in Liverpool around that time.
Still, if its just a case of putting bums on seats to pay for other musical genres. then ok, but not for me.

Ignoring the fact that they're not part of the festival proper, I see more and more 'pop' performers appearing at folk festivals.

Whilst I like Beatles stuff I really don't expect (or want) to hear it at a folk festival I go to.

The Proclaimers (for example) are very popular - but in my opinion they're a pop group, not a folk group and have no place at a folk festival...in MY opinion.

The nostalgia industry rolls on and on, eh? And it's not even the jaded remnants of one of those 60s pop bands that are still hanging on but a copy band!

The WEAVERS disbanded in 1964 highly unlikely that they covered any Beatles songs

Presumably, as The Beatles had taken on the mantle of master songwriters by 1964, they felt that; the game was up for them?

Tosh The Beatles were hardly master songwriters in 1964.
They improved immensely with the help of George Martin.Idonot think the Spinners ever covered any of their songs either, where do you dream this stuff up.

welllll... that's easily accommodated...

While everyone else is enjoying a communal good time live music experience,
you can sit all alone in your grumpy pants listening to your Beatles gramophone recordings...

Now let's think of all the reaallly good post 1966 last tour songs the Beatles never got to perform in public,
that the most accomplished tribute bands can at least give us a very accurate representation
of what they might have sounded like if the real Beatles
had continued playing live on stage...

We are talking about a group that disbanded 45 years ago and enriched the lives of millions with their catchy songs and humour and performances. This is the crux of the issue; can they now be considered or accepted as "Folk" (among other musical idioms)? After attending hundreds of singarounds and hearing Beatles songs performed on numerous occasions- je donc oui!

The organisers of these small-town festivals have integrity and business sense. One way of balancing the books is to pull in non-folkie local punters. If it means the difference between having a festival with a pop group to get bums on seats, and no festival at all, I'd go for the first option.

I have far more of an issue with has-been pop-stars who were once on the folk scene, who are absolute dross (IMHO), singing 60s hits thrashing it out on 2 rhythm acoustic guitars, being booked at same festival 2 years running.

This is not prejudice. One of these 2 singers did an absolutely brilliant concert at the same place 3 years ago singing mostly folk material backed by brilliant musicians. You can't get the staff these days!

Got nice editions of Pepper's and Revolver for Xmas. Love Revolver especially - Tomorrow Never Knows sets the mood a whole psyche-folk-drone aesthetic and still sounds like it was recorded next year.

When I was a kid I my folk epiphany came (aged 6) when I flipped over my mum's copy of All You Need is Love and just melted to Lennon's modal clavioline on Baby You're a Rich Man which said it all. As Camus said : "A man's work is nothing but this slow trek to rediscover, through the detours of art, those two or three great and simple images in whose presence his heart first opened." That was my first...

The Beatles may not be folk in the folkie sense (thank God) but they're a huge part of the folklore of British traditional culture these past 50+ years. Our local Beatles tribute act Jepps - virtuoso Waits in the timeless tradition of doing what they'd paid to do excellently - were a regular at Fylde Festival in its latter years, even getting the celebrated Organiser up and dancing...

Folk is as folk does.
