19 Nov 14 - 02:04 PM (#3678408) Subject: Tech: no video input on monitor From: GUEST,mg my older desktop computer was unplugged for a while, I plugged it in and monitor will not come on. it beeped several times. green light came on and it switched to orange light blinking with no video input message. i checked all connections, repowered, etc. it has not been moved or dropped..worked fine for a long time. i probably punched some of the buttons on the front...googled it and watched a couple of you tube videos. i am not going to be replacing video cards etc....will hopefully switch out cable tonight... any suggestions? i will also hit f8 a bunch of times as someone suggested...thatis about the extent of my skills.... |

If you can connect the monitor to another machine, that will show whether it's the video card or the monitor. Phil |

19 Nov 14 - 03:50 PM (#3678429) Subject: RE: Tech: no video input on monitor From: Joe Offer OK, so it sounds like your monitor is working, but it wouldn't hurt to plug it into your laptop to make sure. Seems to me that your computer is the problem, that it's not booting. It may be trying to boot from the CD in your drive, which is why you should try taking it out. If you had a "bootable" CD or a bootable flash drive, that would help testing. Does the computer sound normal when you turn it on? Can you hear the fan and the usual beeps and the hard drive working? Beyond those things, it's pretty hard to figure out what other tests we can talk you through. Good luck. -Joe- |

19 Nov 14 - 05:51 PM (#3678471) Subject: RE: Tech: no video input on monitor From: GUEST,Grishka When a computer starts up, it will try to send a signal to the graphics device (monitor) before addressing any CD or USB drive etc., which means that these are not involved at all. If your laptop has a plug into which the monitor cable fits, try it there. Use the key combination (with a key usually labeled "Fn") that activates the external monitor plug. (To make quite sure, you can borrow another monitor and try it as well, or try your monitor at another desktop computer.) If you still get "No video input", the cable is gone, e.g. a pin has broken. If the monitor works ok, the graphics card may be broken or have lost contact somehow. (NB I am not anything like an expert; all FWIW.) |

19 Nov 14 - 06:24 PM (#3678480) Subject: RE: Tech: no video input on monitor From: Stanron It's a long time since I did the computer maintainance course but if my memory serves me right one beep indicates no fault found and more than one beep indicates errors. Does your PC have a separate video card? Some PCs have a video chip and output on the motherboard and if a separate video card is added that has it's own video output as well. Only one of these will work so it is worth looking to see if there is another video output somewhere at the back of the machine and if there is checking that. |

19 Nov 14 - 09:07 PM (#3678526) Subject: RE: Tech: no video input on monitor From: GUEST,mg i will try these suggestions tonight and try a new cable if it is the right one. this is not a precious computer..refurbished, cheap..almost dropped it on my foot once so i am not fond of it...i am not going to put any money into repairing it...i have a newer laptop to use..just used this to copy my lullaby cds etc. but i also can not use my newer laptop for the genealogy program i like, which works on xp for sure and probably 2003..if anyone has one they want to sell really cheaply, let me know...i have given several of these away and now i wish i had kept one... |

20 Nov 14 - 06:00 PM (#3678773) Subject: RE: Tech: no video input on monitor From: GUEST,mg i swapped out the cable, listened to the beep code last night..it was 1 3 4 3 i think. cable did not do anything. i think i might have hit those buttons i never touch on the front of the monitor and thrown it into some mode...i will take pictures tonight of the buttons and also try to connect monitor to my laptop if i have the right cable to see if it is the monitor or the computer. |

The PC needed to be unplugged, and then the graphics card needed to be pushed firmly into it's slot. Reconected to the power supply,reboot, then it started working again as normal. Apparently, over time the card had vibrated slightly adrift from making good connection with the motherboard slot contacts. Also blasting with an air gun [my giotto rubber air bulb] to remove any dust from the contacts. This happened every few months afterwards, requiring the same solution. |
