Filmed and broadcast on BBC in 1997, its release to home viewers was delayed by copyright issues until this year, but it is now available in all its glory. Any connoisseur of traditional music will appreciate the achievement here: the very best of players and singers from Britain, Ireland and the US brought together at various hotels in the Scottish highlands to be recorded, basically, jamming on their favorite songs and tunes. I'd watch it if there were no one but the house band - Aly Bain, Jerry Douglas, Russ Barenberg, Danny Thompson to name a few - but the icing on the cake are the featured guests who on this disc include Paul Brady, Rosanne Cash, Nanci Griffith, John Martyn, Maura O'Connell, Eddi Reader, Donald Shaw, Karen Matheson, Sharon Shannon, Ricky Skaggs and more. The series has been criticized by folk purists for being too polished, too produced. I say that's nonsense. These people were together for no more than a few days and shot the program with minimal rehearsals. That the finished product looks and sounds so stunning is due to the stellar musicianship and the skills of the technicians. There are now six seasons of this brilliant show available on CD and DVD. The video discs are Region 0 and so will not play in a regular player in the US, but they will play just fine on your computer. And the original pair of TS2 cds (long unavailable) has recently been remastered, and repackaged into an expanded 3-volume set complete with an extra 17 tracks! Irresistible.. It's a magnificent franchise, and contains some highly treasurable individual performances as well as some consistently brilliant ensemble work. It's all too easy to take this kind of excellence for granted these days, but these Sessions really do refresh the parts... with their genuine feelgood spirit that cuts right through to the viewer/listener. Every single release in the series (dvd and cd alike) is worth your investment. And by the way, some of the cds also contain bonus tracks of equivalent quality. Many hours of pleasure guaranteed! |

The different TV format PAL/NTSC 'might' be an issue but a computer should be able to get over this. It seems easier 'this way' in that US dvds play OK (generally) on UK players of all sorts (unless ancient). There is freeware software called VLC from www.videolan.oeg that I know from experience works on UK discs in the US if you have problems. Nick |

I love the sound of Transatlantic and really enjoy myself when I go, but why are there hardly ever women in the main band? More often than not the ladies come out in pretty dresses to sing a song at the front - they often play their instruments, of course, and some sit with the band for a few (aka Julie Fowlis), but is it really the case that in all these years, none of them have ever met a female instrumentalist who would be good enough to join the regular band? Appreciate there have been exceptions over the years, but generally I'm right. Am I the only one who suspects it's a bit of a boy's club? |
