26 Nov 99 - 02:10 PM (#140990) Subject: Apple Mac Question From: Ed Pellow I want to buy my sister and brother-in-law a modem, and connect them to the Internet, as a Chistmas present. They use a fairly old (4 years?) Mac. Whilst I use, know and understand Windows very well, I know very little about Macs. I have a few technical queries. I'm posting this message in the hope of finding a Mac expert who would be kind enough to give me some advice via email (I don't think the discussion would be appropriate for this group)as I try to understand how I can give a Christmas present that actually works. Modems for Macs are about the same as those for Windows machines--it's the driver (software) and perhaps the cable where the difference is. One concern is whether their Mac has enough memory to run a web browser and enough hard drive space for the program and any downloaded programs and data. --some only moderately informed opinion from seed |

The best modem to use for an Apple is probably a Global Village. What Mac are they using? It shouldn't be a problem - the Mac I have is about 5 or 6 years old, with 20Mb ram, and runs the internet ok. where are you based - I can probably tell you where your nearest Mac dealer is! corinna |

She spends all the time she could spend cooking pondering Mac-L and other related lists. If she doesn't know, it's not a question that can be asked. Write her at daly@san.rr.com and she'll help you out. Mac dealers can be neophytes depending on the store -- you might stirke it lucky. A lil ol IMac does everything your relatives could want at a very reasonable price and does it lickety split, with far fewer confusing ewwow messages than you might get from Windoze variants. Not that they haven't gotten better lately. Amos
