Hobgoblin Music, Crawley shop to close

I was buying some bits from Hobgoblin Music in Crawley recently and was told that this branch will be closing at the end of January - not enough custom in the area.

Local Hobgoblin business will be centered around Brighton. Not surprising - whenever I've used the Crawley shop in the past, I've been the only customer in it.

Oh that's a shame. It was easy to get to and to park as well

Indeed, Sarah - 25 minutes from me and easy, free parking just outside the shop. It's been there since 1977. Nobby, the manager, is hoping to look after the Brighton shop, but it's a worrying time for him - and also for the other people who work there.

That's where I bought, thirty-five years ago, the anglo concertina I've been using ever since. Even back then I wondered, "Why in Crawley"!

It is a bit off the beaten track, nowhere near the main shopping centre in Crawley. Matt works there and he says that it is always a bit of a sleepy day there. Whereas the new Brighton shop is very central and is busy all the time on the days when he is working in Brighton.

I think that the Crawley shop was kept as a bit of sentiment because that is where Hobgoblin started out. A huge proportion of their trade including nearly all the strings, capos other accessories are now handled on-line from their Worthing warehouse.

Previous managers include Nigel Chippindale and Steve Turner.

You can get all your accessories from The Music Company that are only three doors up and they are always really friendly and helpful. Least that way you still can get free parking and they do a lot more accessories.

I believe that their Brighton branch (a location that makes much more sense) only opened fairly recently, so really won't they be going back to the same number of shops as a few years before?

Sorry for any staff affected of course. Hobgoblin do a great job really, I'm sure many people have been encouraged into playing folk instruments by browsing their stock.
