Lyr ADD: Just One More Chorus (Davy Steele)

Our "In Harmony's Way" singaround in Auburn, California, closes every session with a parting song, chosen yearly. The song for 2014 was "Here Is My Home," by Si Kahn. We had the vote for the song for 2015, and the competition was stiff. Contenders were "Farewell to the House," Dave Webber's "Parting Song," "The Goodnight Song," Alan Bell's "So Here's to You," and "The Good in Living (Steven Sellors). All are worthy choices, but then somebody sang Davy Steele's "Just One More Chorus," and it won by a landslide.

I haven't found the lyrics for "Just One More Chorus," but I'll transcribe them tomorrow if nobody has them. But if you can save me the work, please post the lyrics in this thread.

Here's a link to a stunning performance of the song -

'Steele The Show' concert at Celtic Connections in Glasgow, 2011, to celebrate the life and songs of Davy Steele in the 10th year since his death in 2001. This is his last written song, performed by his youngest son, Jamie Steele with Siobhan Miller, Kathy Stewart, Sally Barker and Patsy Seddon. Also Andy Thorburn, Mary Macmaster, Donald Hay, Dick Gaughan, Eilidh Shaw and Mairearad Green. Introduced by Ian McCalman.

Just one more chorus before we depart,
        Just one more song we all sing from the heart;
The harmonies ring to the words we all know
Just one more song, then we'll go
What a wonderful song!

As far as I can tell, Davy Steele did not record this song. The only recordings I found on Spotify, was the one by his young son Jamie.

JUST ONE MORE CHORUS
(Davy Steele)
As sung by Jamie Steele on "Steele the Show" (2011)

1. The fiddlers are playing a tune in the bar
A slow air for those who've been banished afar
The music gets faster as the night it wears on
Soft through the air comes the strains of a song

CHORUS:
Just one more chorus before we depart
Just one more song we all sing from the heart
The harmonies ring to the words we all know
Just one more song then we'll go

2. At festival time on some cold draughty stair
Or smoky old back room the singers are there
When everyone else has packed up and gone
They'll still be trying for just one more song

3. No matter what accent no matter what tongue
When people love singing they all sound as one
This gathering of singers will go on and on
Join in the chorus of just one more song

4. And though we may part soon, our own ways to find
And though we may scatter like seeds on the wind
Whenever we meet on these gathering days
We'll still sing the songs as we've sung them always

This wonderful song is on the CD "Davy Steele - The Show" Greentrax CDTRAX358 which contains 16 of Davy's songs.

I'm delighted you like Davy's song. Martin Curtis in NZ learnt it from the group Stravaig (friends of mine and Davy's) and recorded it on his CD Sea to Summit otherwise I may not have been aware of it. It has become a favourite of many for singing at gatherings, particularly at the end of the night. Patsy

The lyrics are as Ian Hendrie has posted, tho' what looks like second verse is in fact the chorus, so would be sung after each of the next 3 verses. We sang this for some French friends who loved it ("no matter what accent, no matter what tongue" especially.)
The "cold draughty stair" almost certainly refers to the broad spiral staircase in Edinburgh Students' Union where Edinburgh Folk Festival used to be held: great acoustics there!
I was at the live "Steele the Show" concert in at Glasgow's Celtic Connections in 2011: it was a very emotional evening, with many well-known artists singing Davy's songs. Jamie took centre stage in the huge Fruitmarket venue to sing this song - no sign of nerves! (Davy had died 10 years previously). Davy's wife, Patsy Seddon had done a grand job of putting the show together. It was later reprised with many of the same artists at "Trad on the Tyne" in Haddington, East Lothian.
The whole CD is fantastic: see: Steele the Show

Thanks a lot for posting the lyrics, Ian.

Am I right in thinking that Davy Steele - The Show was ten years after Davy's death?

Did Davy Steele ever record "Just One More Chorus"?

From the wording of the post above by Patsy, I think it's fair to assume that Davy never recorded the song.

This is David, his eldest son. Dad did release the song. You can find it on an album called Leaving Friday Harbor by The Battlefield Band.

I've just listened to "One More Chorus" on the Battlefield Band album mentioned by David above. It is a different song. The song this thread is mainly about is called "Just One More Chorus". Understandable assumption that it's the same song given the similarity in the titles.

Well as Joe said in his original post, "Just One More Chorus" is right up there with the rest of all the "parting songs". It has caught the imagination of so many people.

And the Battlefield Band connection: the last time I saw Davy perform live was at Sidmouth Festival in the pouring rain at the outdoor arena with " The Batties". The band were under cover, but the audience weren't! I think this was not long before news of his illness came out.

Heard this song for the first time tonight, ably performed by Pete Grassby, at the virtual bodmin folk club.
It was the standout song of the evening, and there were some good uns.
Thanks Pete for bringing this song and pointing me in its direction.

I'll maybe do it at the next Mudcat Zoom session then: it's one I've been singing since I saw that Celtic Connections concert in 2011.

Here's the link to "One More Chorus / The Mason's Apron" by the Battlefield Band on the Leaving Friday Harbor album. It's on Spotify, so I don't know who can play it.

Here's a YouTube video of the same song, but I don't know who the performers are.

Some of the same lyrics, but not the same melody or verses.
