I've never thought of Joe Cocker as being associated with folk music, but I did enjoy many of his singing performances although his style was a bit bizarre at times. Sorry for his passing.

Joe Cocker's Big Blues played in Grimsby and Cleethorpes a lot in the mid 60s. Always a friendly man with a tight band and a fascinating range of material. Together with Dave (Crying Game) Berry and The Cruisers, also from Sheffield, he introduced me to some wonderful music.
I was so pleased to see him do well later, although I knew he had his problems, and I'm saddened to hear of his passing.
So long Vance Arnold RIP

A bit of a hero of mine. Whenever we played church halls etc around Sheffield years ago, it wasn't uncommon for the caretaker to remind us that "we had Joe Cocker play here once. Compared to him you're crap."

Usually followed by "I thought you'd be packed up and out by now. I fought in the war for the likes of you"

RIO Joe. I assume that thunder I hear is you!

Definately a one if a kind, when it came to his voice. I truly enjoyed his version of "I get by with a little help from my friends" as a teen in University- (I was toking in the back of a speeding car when I heard it first time, it was playing on the cars 8 track). Thanks for the music, and good memory-RIP.

In the early 1960's, Vance Arnold and The Avengers used to play at our Youth Club dances in Sheffield (we got special treatment because one of The Avengers lived nearby). The caretakers were right, they were a very good band - and he was a great singer.

It's a shame that he never had the opportunity to team up with the R&B group The Spaniels.

Marvellous singer and a lovely bloke with no side to him. When I lived in Sheffield my landlord was a big mate of his, they'd been in the cubs and scouts together, so Joe always looked him up when he went home. I remember one particularly boozy night with him that started in the Red House on Solly Street and ended drinking home brewed 'Old Walter' [named after the Archers' character Walter Gabriel whose catchphrase was 'Oh dear oh dear, oh dear !']
That was the first time I had ever drunk port and brandy as a 'warmer'.
Not many white guys could sing with that blues/soul feel Joe had and his music will be remembered - another good man gone. RIP .

As FB says, Joe Cocker and his Big Blues did play in Cleethorpes quite a bit. As I recall, they played alternate Friday nights at the Witch Doctor club in the Lifeboat Hotel - the other week it was The Rats from Hull (who went on the become the spiders From Mars).
