I do remember some of the words to "One Staff Officer Jumped Right Over the Other Staff Officers Back" though. |

That aside, I've mangaged to find 2 versions of "When this whatever war etc".. The first is in a book by Roy Palmer entitled "What A Lovely War". the second sung by Roy Harris (mentioned elsewhere here on the cat).. though I don't know from what cd/tape... The two being entirely different apart from the "the main phrase". I suspect that the version sung by Roy Harris has been toned down somewhat I too was left remembering " One Staff Officer..etc" from the film.. perhaps that is significant in some way .. like the fact that the military elite sent hundreds of thousands of men to their slaughter without a qualm, being more interested in promotion, stays embedded in the mind even after more than 80 years on. And even further back.. "Peter's Private Army".. apart from longing the chords, I'm curious to learn the "History" behind it.. obviously from the Pennisular wars, I'm wondering what the reference to Peter is all about. The fella that sang this to me, I believe, has been dead a few years now. The reference to the Brig Carthiginnian was where I first heard George sing this & Van Hope was in charge of its restoration. I don't know if the TraLaLa part was because George would not use sailor's lingo in what he called mixed company. I think it more likely that it's closer to what was posted above. Barry |

Like all good songs from the "trenches", they nick a well known tune.. it's a tradition that has quite a history.. in fact John Gay "stole" all the melodies he used in his Beggar's Opera A particular favourite of mine is the "D-Day Dodgers", penned to the melody of " Lilly of Laguna", which in turn was "converted" from an earlier song.. it's all good stuff.. And Susan.. thanks for lifting off the veil.. do you feel better for it?... and I agree re the futility of war " When will they ever learn".. I sometimes wonder about the number of songs/tunes written about the glory and anti-glory of war.. not so many are penned about the complete arseholes that are known as politicians who cause them in the first place.. Some people live in communities or towns with lovely names, such as Heart's Content, Sorrento or Moreton-in-Marsh, not me. Of course it could be worse, I could come from Dildo, Newfoundland. No offense to the wonderful citizens there, but you must admit its a pretty odd name for a town. |

As Dick's source for the text to Peter's Private Army I'm afraid I don't have the chords for the song. It was recorded by Johnny Collins on an album which I believe was entitled Peter's Private Army which might help

I lent a helping hand while there in the restoration in the late 70's. It was at this time I met an old Cape Horner George who same the song. George just switched the name from what ever it had been to the ship that was underfoot, he also did this to another song I got from him, the "Albertina" which he sang as the Carthiginnian. I later found a versioncollected by Hugill but never came close to find one that was what George sang. He would've have been a cabin boy around WW1, so he my have picked up "When My Spell Is Over" (my title, he never mentioned one) sometime later after he left the Baltic trade & went into the Cape Horn trade. I'm gonna go over what I have from George, after seeing the above song (Peter's Private Army) I think some of the words I have may make more sense (it holds very true to the same spirit) & maybe I can put more of it together. I am interested/intrigued that the melody was used not only for the land troops but those sailing the main Barry. It would be really nice to be able pinpoint the origins of these various adaptations.. i.e. D.Day Dodgers (sung to Lilly Marlene).. history has provided an author for this.. if only it were possible to do so for other songs And I'm still in hope of finding the chords and more info behind "Peter's Private Army".. perhaps I should have been more specific in my thread title.. mega SEG Mary..
