Also I'm interested as to what "versions" of "When This Lousy/Bloody War Is Over" you may know.. the melody is commonly refered to as "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" As always many thanks you guys Mick |

27 Nov 99 - 11:02 PM (#141549) Subject: RE: Chords req: plus some other stuff From: Metchosin This may not help Mick, but it might get this back to the top again, all I can remember of "When this Lousy War is Over" is that it was one of the more profound songs in probably, one of the most underrated, masterful antiwar movies ever made, Oh What a Lovely War, starring Richard Attenbourgh. I do remember some of the words to "One Staff Officer Jumped Right Over the Other Staff Officers Back" though. |

Not all trench writers were famous. Not all were polite. So some very well known hymns took on very colourful lyrics. One was Joseph Scriven's What a friend we have in Jesus. From the trenches came When this lousy war is over:
When this lousy war is over no more soldiering for me,
(Repeat first two lines of first verse)

28 Nov 99 - 07:38 PM (#141868) Subject: RE: Chords req: plus some other stuff From: Mick Lowe Thanks "Metchosin".. I so hate talking to "pen names", what are we all so afraid of? That aside, I've mangaged to find 2 versions of "When this whatever war etc".. The first is in a book by Roy Palmer entitled "What A Lovely War". the second sung by Roy Harris (mentioned elsewhere here on the cat).. though I don't know from what cd/tape... The two being entirely different apart from the "the main phrase". I suspect that the version sung by Roy Harris has been toned down somewhat I too was left remembering " One Staff Officer..etc" from the film.. perhaps that is significant in some way .. like the fact that the military elite sent hundreds of thousands of men to their slaughter without a qualm, being more interested in promotion, stays embedded in the mind even after more than 80 years on. And even further back.. "Peter's Private Army".. apart from longing the chords, I'm curious to learn the "History" behind it.. obviously from the Pennisular wars, I'm wondering what the reference to Peter is all about. Cheers MIck

28 Nov 99 - 08:02 PM (#141885) Subject: RE: Chords req: plus some other stuff From: Metchosin As an afterthought, it may be a satire of the time as well. I'll try to see what I can dig up.. Susan |
28 Nov 99 - 08:19 PM (#141895) Subject: RE: Chords req: plus some other stuff From: Barry Finn "When my spell on the Carthaginian is over, no more sailoring for me And when I leave this God Damn hooker, oh how happy I will be . No more ham & eggs on Monday no more shining dirty brass You can go & tell Van Hope the skipper he can go & Tra La La La La La" I've never been able to get more than one other verse to this & found out, here, that it had the above relations. The fella that sang this to me, I believe, has been dead a few years now. The reference to the Brig Carthiginnian was where I first heard George sing this & Van Hope was in charge of its restoration. I don't know if the TraLaLa part was because George would not use sailor's lingo in what he called mixed company. I think it more likely that it's closer to what was posted above. Barry |
30 Nov 99 - 06:53 PM (#142862) Subject: RE: Chords req: plus some other stuff From: Mick Lowe Barry, You need to expound more.. i.e. what the "Carthiginnian" is/was.. Like all good songs from the "trenches", they nick a well known tune.. it's a tradition that has quite a history.. in fact John Gay "stole" all the melodies he used in his Beggar's Opera A particular favourite of mine is the "D-Day Dodgers", penned to the melody of " Lilly of Laguna", which in turn was "converted" from an earlier song.. it's all good stuff.. And Susan.. thanks for lifting off the veil.. do you feel better for it?... and I agree re the futility of war " When will they ever learn".. I sometimes wonder about the number of songs/tunes written about the glory and anti-glory of war.. not so many are penned about the complete arseholes that are known as politicians who cause them in the first place.. Perhaps I'm just a sceptic at heart Mick |
01 Dec 99 - 06:57 PM (#143394) Subject: RE: Chords req: plus some other stuff From: Metchosin It does feel better Mick considering "Metchosin" is the Coast Salish word for "stinking whale". |
02 Dec 99 - 08:10 PM (#143890) Subject: RE: Chords req: plus some other stuff From: Mick Lowe Susan.. I can't help but wonder why &Coast Salish& (and you need to explain that to me.. LOL) would come up with a word for a &stinking whale& and perhaps more so, why you should adopt that as your &pen name& I also take by the way of a lack of a reply that Barry you haven't checked this thread.. so I'm refreshing it so you can answer.. hopefully.. Also hopefully someone will come up with the info re &Peter's Private Army&.. I know.. I live in hope.. Mick |
02 Dec 99 - 08:45 PM (#143913) Subject: RE: Chords req: plus some other stuff From: Metchosin Metchosin is a west coast Indian word for the community where I live. Some people live in communities or towns with lovely names, such as Heart's Content, Sorrento or Moreton-in-Marsh, not me. Of course it could be worse, I could come from Dildo, Newfoundland. No offense to the wonderful citizens there, but you must admit its a pretty odd name for a town. |
04 Dec 99 - 07:52 PM (#144751) Subject: RE: Chords req: plus some other stuff From: Mick Lowe I'm laughing here Susan.. I'm also trying to get my head around why anyone should name a town/settlement "Dildo".. I don't know anyone from Newfoundland so I'm not sure whether I can express an opinion as to what they get up to in order to name a town thus. I am also intrigued as to why you included "Moreton in the Marsh" being in the Cotswolds, here in dear old Blighty, along with other N.American sites. And I fear no one is going to come up with the guitar chords for Peter's Private Army That's me done for this thread Mick

05 Dec 99 - 01:38 AM (#144853) Subject: RE: Chords req: plus some other stuff From: SingsIrish Songs Mick, Just in case you or anyone else hadn't checked, there are three songs (consecutively listed) in the database under W...two having midis that sound very similar...(and one tune is entitled "What a Friend We Have...") The third I don't know whether it is the same melody or not since there is no midi and I am not familiar with it... Just thought I'd add my own two cents worth. (And let me know if I need to supply the eggs...) Mary |
06 Dec 99 - 06:02 AM (#145330) Subject: Lyr Add: WHEN THIS BLASTED WAR IS OVER From: AndyG Hi Mick,
Sorry, I seem to have missed this thread. My thanks to SingsIrishSongs / Mary Kate for drawing it to my attention
As Dick's source for the text to Peter's Private Army I'm afraid I don't have the chords for the song. It was recorded by Johnny Collins on an album which I believe was entitled Peter's Private Army which might help
re: When this lousy war is over
WHEN THIS BLASTED WAR IS OVER I've also heard variants such as "blasted/lousy/bloody war" in the opening line and over similar changes, also a second half of the verse which runs;
No more church parades on Sunday,
a variant of which was, I think, used in the film Oh What a Lovely War

Further to Dildo, Newfoundland, while working in St. John's, I rented a car , to drive to the community just so I could claim I'd been there. To my surprise there was also an Upper Dildo too.... That really got me wondering what they did there! |
06 Dec 99 - 07:03 PM (#145693) Subject: RE: Chords req: plus some other stuff From: Mick Lowe Upper Dildo has certainly got me wondering... And yes I am reviewing this thread.. and yes Mary I didn't put a more succinct title to this thread as I was hoping to trawl lyrics/chords to more than one song.. so hopefully you'll forgive me.. As for lyrics to "When this lousy/insert whatever term you prefer here" war is over, I'm still going with Roy Harris's version that seems to have a lot more versesm than those quoted, albeit less profane... I'm still in want of the chords for "Peter's Private Army" which is a much older anti war song.. I appreciate all your help so far Mick |
06 Dec 99 - 07:55 PM (#145729) Subject: RE: Chords req: plus some other stuff From: Barry Finn Hi Mick, Carthiginnian is a restored brig tied up on the Island of Maui. I lent a helping hand while there in the restoration in the late 70's. It was at this time I met an old Cape Horner George who same the song. George just switched the name from what ever it had been to the ship that was underfoot, he also did this to another song I got from him, the "Albertina" which he sang as the Carthiginnian. I later found a versioncollected by Hugill but never came close to find one that was what George sang. He would've have been a cabin boy around WW1, so he my have picked up "When My Spell Is Over" (my title, he never mentioned one) sometime later after he left the Baltic trade & went into the Cape Horn trade. I'm gonna go over what I have from George, after seeing the above song (Peter's Private Army) I think some of the words I have may make more sense (it holds very true to the same spirit) & maybe I can put more of it together. My thanks in here too & thanks to you Mick. Barry |
08 Dec 99 - 08:27 PM (#146871) Subject: RE: Chords req: plus some other stuff From: Mick Lowe Thanks all I think I shall have toi take the time and trouble of transcribing the lyrics of "When this lousy war..etc" that I have and post it here. I am interested/intrigued that the melody was used not only for the land troops but those sailing the main Barry. It would be really nice to be able pinpoint the origins of these various adaptations.. i.e. D.Day Dodgers (sung to Lilly Marlene).. history has provided an author for this.. if only it were possible to do so for other songs And I'm still in hope of finding the chords and more info behind "Peter's Private Army".. perhaps I should have been more specific in my thread title.. mega SEG Mary.. 10 Dec 99 - 09:00 AM (#147515) Subject: RE: Chords req: plus some other stuff From: AndyG Hi Mick, I did a bit of a search and got the following; On this page you'll find the quote; "... contact Martin Graebe, 100 Cheltenham Road, Gloucester GL2 0LX (tel:01452 523861) ..."
Given that Dick has ascribed copyright for Peter's Private Army to a Martin Graebe this could be another avenue to follow.

11 Dec 99 - 06:17 PM (#148233) Subject: Lyr Add: WHEN THIS LOUSY WAR IS OVER From: Mick Lowe Thanks, Barry I assume that's the same "Jack in the Green" that Grand Union Morris sing (well one of them, possibly Andrew) on their latest album.. the title of which I love "Can't Get The Buggers Out"... Good tape, well worth listening to, and if I had it to hand I'd post the URL for their site here, but I don't, so I won't.. I'd offer to do it tomorrow but I've a feeling Mary will beat me to it. And just out of interest, I've transcribed the lyrics to "Lousy War" as sung by Roy Harris (well I think it's him singing it).. here goes.. WHEN THIS LOUSY WAR IS OVER tune (What a friend we have in Jesus) Chorus:- When this lousy war is over No more soldiering for me When I get my civvy clothes Oh how happy I shall be No more church parades on Sunday No more putting in for leave I will miss the sergeant-major How he'll miss me, how he'll grieve No more standing to in trenches Only one more church parade No more N.C.O.'s to curse us No more Tickler's marmalade chorus They all said when we enlisted Fame and medals we would win But the fame is in the guard room And those medals made of tin chorus Cheers Mick
