No details are available as yet, but Glenn was in his 80s and has not been in the best of health. It is hard to register that he is gone. There is a lot of stuff about Glenn on the internet for those who may be interested. The link below is to an interview that was done some years back at Glenn's house up on Dodd Mountain which is just south of Mountain View. The Castration of the Strawberry Roan is a good example of his singing. It's the real thing. He was a working cowboy, a rodeo cowboy, an artist, storyteller, singer, musician, and historian and recited poetry, and exceptional in every area. He was scheduled for the National Cowboy Poetry Gathering at the end of January. I hope that he was able to make it. I was happy, last spring when we were down, that Glenn was still at it. I first saw him in the 1960s sometime and have been a fan since then. For now here is a link to the National Endowment for Arts site and the comment there on Glenn. He made it out to the National Gathering and became ill and was hospitalized after returning home. He made it to Elko to get in one more show, made it home, and that's a good way to end a remarkable life. Glenn was doing the rodeo circuit in the 40s & 50s. He played at the Newport Folk Festival in 1963. I saw Tom Paxton some time back and asked if he remembered Glenn as he was at the same event. He replied, "I sure do!" and asked me to tell Glenn hi for him. Glenn wrote The Hell Bound Train, a study of cowboy songs and the history of rodeo. (University of Illinois Press, 1973). He recorded an LP of the same name in 1964 and was recording from then into the 90s. I think I have them all. If you look through Guy Logston's book, The Whorehouse Bells Were Ringing, you'll find that Glenn was the source for half the book. I pointed that out to him one time and he grinned and looked down and said in his deep voice, "Yeah, I know a lot of songs". He seemed to have a limitless memory for songs and names in the rodeo, both human and equine. Then there was his performing. He picked up some skills through the years and his timing was razor sharp. We would all be helpless with laughter. In recent years Glenn was very pleased to have met Brigid Reedy. I think someone calculated that they were born 72 years apart, Brigid being 10 at the time. Well they made for a lovely duet. I don't know if I am mourning the man or all the cowboy culture he carried inside him. All I know is it was so good to know him. We all loved him. Like many others, I treasure the time I was able to spend with Glenn, listening to his stories, sitting in awestruck attention while he rattled off song after song, and groaning when one of his shaggy dog tails finally reached the punchline. Think I'll trap my guitar and sing a couple verses in his honor. We sat and swilled and sweat in the 95 degree Ozarks steam and I listened as a couple of heroes told yarns and talked trail dust while passing tourists peered in then turned away. Glenn was one of those I think it was Wally McRae talked about who still had corners that hadn't got rounded off by civilizing influences. The world has just gotten smaller and I'll miss him. Did not know just how sick he was but knew that he was because he could barely put one foot in front of the other, he always spoke visited with those that sat near him and never complained. Found out just yesterday that he had taken his last ride up the mountain. He finally made his last trip home and there he peacefully passed. You will certainly be missed Glenn, thank you for what you gave to the world and to Mountain View. Sonja |
