December 12th is slated to be the official release date for the first ever compilation CD of Bainbridge Island musicians. There are five folk singers (including little ole me!!), a flatpicker, a full-moon drum circle, a couple of jazz emsembles, a classical pianist, a Debbie Gibson-type pop vocalist, a high school christian rock band (which is actually pretty good), and the Senior Center chorus. And probably someone else I forgot about. Portlanders should note that Tom Herring, son of the well-loved Merritt Herring, is also one of the featured folkies. Bainbridge Island is in the Puget Sound, just a ferryride west of Seattle. I've only been here a little over a year, but I've been really impressed with the local music scene. We've got folkies comin' out of the woodwork here, and they seem to be constantly pushing each other to new levels of awesomeness. I got a chance to hear most of the CD, and it's exciting, fresh, raw, beautiful stuff. Anyway, we're having a concert at 2pm Sunday, December 12th, at Island Center Hall. Anyone in the Seattle area should feel free to write to me for directions; I'd love to see you there! I don't see his name among the featured. My sister moved away from the island (north end) about 3 years ago, so I can't get info from her. |

It has a song on it called I think Haul on the Anchor Chain which tells about the ferry ride from Seattle to/from Bainbridge. One verse goes. Oh the turn around from Bainbridge is an hour fourty flat. You can listen to Even Steven and that lovely singing Cat! Oh its haul on the anchor chain and pull on the oar. And they did busk on the Washington State Ferries in the 80's. Don't believe they are still together; in fact, I think Kat wrote a song about that. Kat is a wonderful songwriter, guitarist and singer, whose songs have been played on the WKSU folk music website. If I get a chance I'll post the link; it came from an old thread about folk music on the Web. This all reminds me of how great the Western Washington folk scene was, from Bellingham down to Olympia. You might try contacting somebody at Victory Music in Tacoma (that's a link to their website). Victory used to sponsor a weekly open mike at the Antique Sandwich in Tacoma. I hope Kat is still around. She's worth hearing. One of these days I would love to get back to the Northwest to sing and hang out. In the meantime, I'm still looking for a song circle here. Somebody said there's one in Lahaina on Maui...Speaking of which, Margo, Tom actually went to Ilo, on the coast of Peru ("Oh Hilo town is in Peru"). But this is a nice place anyway.
