Bainbridge Island Compilation CD

***Warning***: The following message contains shameless self-promotion and may not be suitable for some readers.

December 12th is slated to be the official release date for the first ever compilation CD of Bainbridge Island musicians. There are five folk singers (including little ole me!!), a flatpicker, a full-moon drum circle, a couple of jazz emsembles, a classical pianist, a Debbie Gibson-type pop vocalist, a high school christian rock band (which is actually pretty good), and the Senior Center chorus. And probably someone else I forgot about. Portlanders should note that Tom Herring, son of the well-loved Merritt Herring, is also one of the featured folkies. Bainbridge Island is in the Puget Sound, just a ferryride west of Seattle. I've only been here a little over a year, but I've been really impressed with the local music scene. We've got folkies comin' out of the woodwork here, and they seem to be constantly pushing each other to new levels of awesomeness. I got a chance to hear most of the CD, and it's exciting, fresh, raw, beautiful stuff.

Anyway, we're having a concert at 2pm Sunday, December 12th, at Island Center Hall. Anyone in the Seattle area should feel free to write to me for directions; I'd love to see you there! If you can't make it to the concert but you're interested in the CD, you can write to producer Don Clifton at dclifton@krl.org and tell him that Emily sentchya.

under "Carrigdhoun". Yes, it's a wav file and takes forever to load. My sincerest apologies.

I used to live a couple miles from there (northeast of East Bremerton, near Illahee), before Lou Killen moved to the island. I don't see his name among the featured. My sister moved away from the island (north end) about 3 years ago, so I can't get info from her.

I don't know the names of all the performers, but the folkies are: Karena Forbes, Eddie Williams, Brent Grossman, Mike Sharp, Tom Herring, and Emily Groff. Is Lou Killen not a folk musician? If so, you can write to Don (address above) and ask if he's on the CD.

Lou Killen has since moved...(to Minnesota or somehwere like that.) so he would not be among 'em

He also lurks on a list that Art is on. I have his e-mail address, but that tells nothing about where he might live now. Poulsbo is a long walk (about 2 hrs) from Bainbridge Island.

He was sighted fixing a concertina near the Pillar's Of Hercules just before some say singing for Sirens but he still wouldn't reveal where he'd been or where he was going. Barry whose suspicious about these kinds of sighting.

Lou has a web page at http://members.aol.com/folktrad/louiskillen/index.html. There's very little on it, but there's a clicky to send e-mail. I'm also pretty sure he said he was living in Minnesota when he was here in October. It's a moot point - if he's not on the CD, he's not on it. He sure would make a nice guest on Prarie Home Companion, though.

Sounds a lively community, (or the tv reception is poor!).The drum circle sounds interesting, do they moon outwards at the audience or inwards at each other? :o)

Gads! All this talk abut Lou Killen and no one has mentioned how sweetly Emily sings! Keep singing, Emily. I am jealous of your pure straight tones. Margo

One of my favorite CDs is "Victory at Sea" by the Victory collective. It has a song on it called I think Haul on the Anchor Chain which tells about the ferry ride from Seattle to/from Bainbridge.

One verse goes.

Oh the turn around from Bainbridge is an hour fourty flat. You can listen to Even Steven and that lovely singing Cat! Oh its haul on the anchor chain and pull on the oar. And we'll raise a glass together when we reach the other shore.

Great song. Do you know who wrote it??? Are any of the musicians also associated with the Victory collective???

JAB

hey, neat! i've never heard that song.

hmmm, associated with the victory collective... good question. my guess is no, however i can ask on sunday. tom herring would have been a good bet, but i don't think he ever actually joined. karena's boyfriend (who wasn't a part of the cd, being a seattle resident) might be a member. yeah, i'll ask. now i'm curious too. : )

i wonder who even steven and that lovely singing cat are? i know several folks who jam together on their way to work downtown... but not by those names.

good luck with the concert & CD!

The lovely singing cat is no doubt Kat Eggleston, half of the Ferryboat Musicians, and I do believe the other half was Steve but I can't recall his last name. And they did busk on the Washington State Ferries in the 80's. Don't believe they are still together; in fact, I think Kat wrote a song about that. Kat is a wonderful songwriter, guitarist and singer, whose songs have been played on the WKSU folk music website. If I get a chance I'll post the link; it came from an old thread about folk music on the Web. This all reminds me of how great the Western Washington folk scene was, from Bellingham down to Olympia. Sigh...

Mark Cohen

Here's the link to the WKSU folk music site, which has a good archive of folk music radio shows, with an emphasis on contemporary singer-songwriters. Emily, I would love to bop over to Bainbridge for the concert, but it's an awfully long ferry ride from Hilo!

Emily, I left Seattle in 1990, so I don't know if Kat is still around. You might try contacting somebody at Victory Music in Tacoma (that's a link to their website). Victory used to sponsor a weekly open mike at the Antique Sandwich in Tacoma. I hope Kat is still around. She's worth hearing. One of these days I would love to get back to the Northwest to sing and hang out. In the meantime, I'm still looking for a song circle here. Somebody said there's one in Lahaina on Maui...Speaking of which, Margo, Tom actually went to Ilo, on the coast of Peru ("Oh Hilo town is in Peru"). But this is a nice place anyway. (Not Margo from Victoria?)
