"A rare opportunity for those in ireland to see this legend."

Pedantry Alert!

Surely that should be: "A rare opportunity ... to HEAR this legend"?

It's an elementary point but, surely, when music and musicians are involved the primary sense that is appealed to is hearing - not sight?

Subject: RE: Martin Carthy to visit Ireland - June 2015
From: Hagman

Hmmm, does one simply "hear" an opera or a concert? Common usage would be to choose "see" for both.

We could "hear" the legend any time on disc, tape or radio, can't often "see" him.

And being from Australia, it was an even rarer opportunity for me...

Yes, exactly! "Martins' performance" implies the performances of several Martins!

surely, Martin's is also inaccurate, because an apostrophe in that place can suggest a missing letter.

A brilliant concert at Ballydehob (Fastnet Festival). The venue was sold out but that didn't detract from the friendly relaxed atmosphere which was made even more intimate by the lack of any microphone or amplification.

The 's suggests a missing two letters: "Martin his" = "Martin's".

Why don't you grammar pedants find something better to do. You really are so tiresome and juvenile. Whatever the grammar or spelling it's obvious what is being discussed.

Happy to stand in naughty corner for being tiresome, SussexCarole.

But what's so "juvenile" about correct grammar and spelling?

There's nothing juvenile about correct grammar and spelling Hagman, but I reckon an adult should know when to discuss ideas rather than proofread other people's comments (note apostrophe).

Apostrophe noted, SussexCarole, and nicely placed. ;-)

How come there was no microphone or amplification at the Ballydehob gig? What was size of crowd? Sounds intriguing. (Did he encore with Harry Lime theme like he did at Whelan's?)

Acoustics are exceptionally good in that particular room, which was why I chose the venue, A wooden floor and wooden ceiling.
there was no bar, no extraneous noises it was a folk club type situation, a vocal microphone was available but Martin chose not to use it, the result was an intimate concert and an attentive and spellbound audience.
it was a fine sunny evening, and one or two were listening outside, it was a memorable evening.

Sounds like it was a fantastic show, GSS. He was super enough at Whelan's, with an audience of about 100. I was lucky enough to grab a front-row seat against the low stage, so it was like being in his lounge-room. Bar noise was negligible and audience was very attentive. Appears we had similar experiences. Long may they continue.
