16 Jun 15 - 07:32 PM (#3717055) Subject: RE: Martin Carthy to visit Ireland - June 2015 From: Hagman MC followed this with a fine evening at Whelan's in Dublin on Sunday night. |
17 Jun 15 - 02:26 AM (#3717076) Subject: RE: Martin Carthy to visit Ireland - June 2015 From: GUEST,Shimrod "A rare opportunity for those in ireland to see this legend." Pedantry Alert! Surely that should be: "A rare opportunity ... to HEAR this legend"? It's an elementary point but, surely, when music and musicians are involved the primary sense that is appealed to is hearing - not sight? |
17 Jun 15 - 02:43 AM (#3717078) Subject: RE: Martin Carthy to visit Ireland - June 2015 From: Hagman Hmmm, does one simply "hear" an opera or a concert? Common usage would be to choose "see" for both. We could "hear" the legend any time on disc, tape or radio, can't often "see" him. And being from Australia, it was an even rarer opportunity for me... |
17 Jun 15 - 06:12 AM (#3717091) Subject: RE: Martin Carthy to visit Ireland - June 2015 From: The Sandman it should be to hear and see this legend, |

18 Jun 15 - 01:23 AM (#3717223) Subject: RE: Martin Carthy to visit Ireland - June 2015 From: Hagman Careful - Shimrod will be pointing out that it should be "Martin's"... ! |
18 Jun 15 - 02:19 AM (#3717231) Subject: RE: Martin Carthy to visit Ireland - June 2015 From: GUEST,Shimrod Yes, exactly! "Martins' performance" implies the performances of several Martins! |
18 Jun 15 - 03:51 AM (#3717240) Subject: RE: Martin Carthy to visit Ireland - June 2015 From: The Sandman surely, Martin's is also inaccurate, because an apostrophe in that place can suggest a missing letter. |
18 Jun 15 - 10:19 AM (#3717295) Subject: RE: Martin Carthy to visit Ireland - June 2015 From: GUEST,Shimrod " ... Martin's is also inaccurate, because an apostrophe in that place can suggest a missing letter." Errrrr??? What???!!! |
18 Jun 15 - 03:44 PM (#3717368) Subject: RE: Martin Carthy to visit Ireland - June 2015 From: GUEST,SussexCarole A brilliant concert at Ballydehob (Fastnet Festival). The venue was sold out but that didn't detract from the friendly relaxed atmosphere which was made even more intimate by the lack of any microphone or amplification. |
18 Jun 15 - 05:16 PM (#3717382) Subject: RE: Martin Carthy to visit Ireland - June 2015 From: Thompson The 's suggests a missing two letters: "Martin his" = "Martin's". |
18 Jun 15 - 06:03 PM (#3717392) Subject: RE: Martin Carthy to visit Ireland - June 2015 From: SussexCarole Why don't you grammar pedants find something better to do. You really are so tiresome and juvenile. Whatever the grammar or spelling it's obvious what is being discussed. |
18 Jun 15 - 06:15 PM (#3717396) Subject: RE: Martin Carthy to visit Ireland - June 2015 From: Hagman Happy to stand in naughty corner for being tiresome, SussexCarole. But what's so "juvenile" about correct grammar and spelling? |
18 Jun 15 - 06:33 PM (#3717400) Subject: RE: Martin Carthy to visit Ireland - June 2015 From: SussexCarole There's nothing juvenile about correct grammar and spelling Hagman, but I reckon an adult should know when to discuss ideas rather than proofread other people's comments (note apostrophe). |
19 Jun 15 - 02:42 AM (#3717447) Subject: RE: Martin Carthy to visit Ireland - June 2015 From: GUEST,Shimrod No theirs nuthing rong with arsking four curect gramer and speling its' not a bigg arsk is it? |
19 Jun 15 - 03:29 AM (#3717452) Subject: RE: Martin Carthy to visit Ireland - June 2015 From: Hagman Apostrophe noted, SussexCarole, and nicely placed. ;-) How come there was no microphone or amplification at the Ballydehob gig? What was size of crowd? Sounds intriguing. (Did he encore with Harry Lime theme like he did at Whelan's?) |

19 Jun 15 - 04:01 AM (#3717459) Subject: RE: Martin Carthy to visit Ireland - June 2015 From: The Sandman Acoustics are exceptionally good in that particular room, which was why I chose the venue, A wooden floor and wooden ceiling. there was no bar, no extraneous noises it was a folk club type situation, a vocal microphone was available but Martin chose not to use it, the result was an intimate concert and an attentive and spellbound audience. it was a fine sunny evening, and one or two were listening outside, it was a memorable evening. |
19 Jun 15 - 05:03 PM (#3717602) Subject: RE: Martin Carthy to visit Ireland - June 2015 From: Hagman Sounds like it was a fantastic show, GSS. He was super enough at Whelan's, with an audience of about 100. I was lucky enough to grab a front-row seat against the low stage, so it was like being in his lounge-room. Bar noise was negligible and audience was very attentive. Appears we had similar experiences. Long may they continue. |
