Music in Remembrance of Black Lives Lost

This is an edited PermaThread®, used for a special project. This thread will be moderated by W y s i w y G !. Feel free to post to this thread, but remember that all messages posted here are subject to editing or deletion.
      -Joe Offer-

The purpose of this thread is to organize and post songs sung or played in remembrance of Black persons who lost their lives at the hands of US badge-wearers.

This sensitive subject was discussed in a recent THREAD, mostly with positivity and civility and amid a variety of US/UK cultural differences. I posted there the facts of dealing with US racism resulting from our history of legalized chattel slavery. That thread was closed at my request when positivity broke down.

As I continued to reflect about that, I established an "In Memoriam" project which is described AT MY BLOG.

Each week I co-lead the music for the service described at that blog, there are lyrics, soundclips, Youtube videos etc., to share here as links to already-posted songs and/or Lyric Add's. As I write about these at my blog, I'll include a link here to that week's entry, and links there to this thread.

I'd love to have some help finding suitable songs, especially if anyone has a name and story well-suited for a matchup. Offertories sung and Communion music played do not necessarily have to be gospel music or hymns.

A larger conversation among white USers of European heritage, about Race in the US, is taking place at a Facebook group in development, White Allies in Dismantling Racism. That conversation will not happen here, in this thread. I will respond as time permits to questions or comments made in good faith, via PM or email. (Non-members-- to contact me, please email Mudcat's registrar Joe Offer, who will forward your email to me: joe@mudcat.org.)

Offertory (announced as "in her memory of Kathryn Johsnton and departed members of the parish"): Lord, Send Your Angels

Shawn Mullins composed a song for Ms. Johnston and Atlanta, which appears on his album "Honeydew". Click here for the original lyrics, my adaptation, and a link to Mullins performing his song.

LORD SEND YOUR ANGELS (VIDEO)
Learned from the singing of Candy Christmas and Sheri Easter.
Adapted, edited, arranged , v. 3, 4 © 2014 Susan O. Hinton for The Good News-Goodtime Band.

1. When I'm alone and the light slowly fades, cold with the night closing in...
I know a shadow of Almighty wings. Lord won't you send them again?

REFRAIN:
Lord send your angels to watch over me; I'm so afraid of the dark!
Lord send your angels to watch over me... wrap me in sheltering arms.
Shield me! Keep me! Hold me safe in your arms!
Lord send your angels to watch over me... wrap me in sheltering arms.

2. Sometimes the child still inside of me cries, with fears of the dangers unseen...
And questions with answers I can't seem to find-- then you send your angels to me!

3. Deep in the darkness of winter's half light, wondering if Spring ever was...
I call Your Name and Your Light fills my heart-- You send Your angels to me!

4. And at the last, when eternal night beckons eternal day...
And as You gather me safe to Your heart, angels will sing all the way.

(Please PM me if you have been watching this thread.)

Many thanks to Joe offer for finding and restoring the above via cache. I'd like to learn how to do that!

Due to the recent Mudcat crash, though, a number of edits and new posts are missing above. When I can I'll catch up what I can. Thank you to whoever quietly restored some of the song-adds I'd listed above-- I'd love to know who, and how it was done.

We have changed the way these are being observed at our church, which I will write about as soon as I can-- and then start adding new posts with what we have been doing during Lent. Just because it's not showing here doesn't mean we stopped.

There were many, many anniversaries of these deaths during February, and March includes even more. Also, I recently received a database tallying hundreds and hundreds more, which provides links to the news stories for many of the people who died. This DB is searchable by city and state to make it possible to look at patterns of geography, patterns of incident-types, and patterns of ages. It should also tell me what months have tended to be the worst each year.

I'd have thought "summer," but the shorter list I've been working from really surprised me with February and March having been so often the months when these police mistakes occurred. I am in need of an Excel-savvy partner to help me look at all that. I'm also in need of some support-- this is nasty work better done in team fashion, and it is work worth doing... which I can describe via PM or (better) by phone.
