This is a pop song, (hence the non folk in the title)... pity I got the title wrong though

Heard it last night and it's bugging me...

chorus went along the lines of "people out there turning music into gold"

Sung by a man, backing vocals were definately Stevie Nicks.

Anyone know what the proper title is and who sang it..

John Stewart is the singer, I think the title maybe simply Gold. Stewart was a member of the Kingston Trio and went on to record many albums solo. Although it predates Gold, I recommend his "Phoenix Concerts-Live" album. I don't know if it is on cd, I played the vinyl to death. Interesting footnote, he wrote "Daydream Believer" that became a hit for the Monkees. John

Stevie Nicks and Lindsay Buckingham (I believe) in the background. The song is called "Gold" and is written and performed by Jon Stewart, from a 70's album with the intriguing title, "Bombs Away, Dream Babies". Jon was one of the original members of the Kingston Trio. Jon's written a lot of very fine songs; it's well worth catching up with his other stuff. Probably his best known song was one that was recorded by the Monkees - "Daydream Believer".
Sorry I don't have the complete lyrics for "gold" but here's what I have:

I remember hearing this on the radio however many years ago, and assuming that it was a Fleetwood Mac and/or Stevie Nicks song. I don't follow contemporary pop music closely enough to listen to the DJs if and when they identify a song's artist. (It's not like I'm gonna go shopping for the recordings.)

Definitely a catchy tune, nicely done and with a memorable lyric (even to someone who only catches the most obvious repeatred words). Nice to learn who's really responsible for it!

Just for info John Stewart died in January this year [I am bloodliner - John's email list].
Gold is a good pop song but nowhere near as good as his best songs. He is a true writer of what became to be called Americana. Try Mother Country for "folk" song.

I shouldn't like Fleetwood Mac. They're everything that's wrong with music of that era; bloated, corporate, hippy-lite, swinging, pharmaceutically enhanced, self-indulgent rock monsters and harpies. But they wrote stunningly good pop tunes. Buying old Eagles albums can only be a matter of time.
Mamas and the Papas are the masters of the genre and Michelle Phillips is still hot. Just thought I'd share.
