There are some from the wider conflict relating to that time. Some Scottish examples would be "The Bonnie Lass Of Fyvie" "The Battle Of Philiphaugh" and the tune to "All The Blue Bonnets Are Over The Border" which is "General Leslie's March To Marston Moor" |

I don't think the song it was based on 'Pretty Peggy of Derby' was even that old. There are no versions of BLOF older than c1820 when it was written. There are lots of ballads from that historical period that went into oral tradition but very few actually about the war itself that did. Of course there are lots of broadside ballads concerning the war. You would find them on the University of California's English ballads website in the Pepys/Roxburghe/Crawford etc. collections. This is the most comprehensive site where you would find such ballads. |

He had a record of them, roundhead songs on one side, Cavalier songs on the other. I don't remember the name. But I suspect it wouldn't be hard to find. Oh, and the last battle of the English Civil War was fought at St. Marye's City, Maryland. |

I'm still curious though as to what makes you think it even relates to the Civil War. I thought Peggy of Derby was 18th century, but I could easily check. It's based on a true story and there is a broadside describing the event, probably at the Bodleian. |

It has 21 tracks, including 'When cannons are roaring', 'When the King enjoys his own again', and 'Drink old England dry', as well as others you may recognise. A few of these also appear on the LP from the '70s, 'Songs and Music of the Redcoats', which you may be able to find second-hand. |

The Scottish royalist commander was Montrose with his army being mostly seasoned Irish troops (led by MacColla and Manus O'Cahan) and Highlanders. They sacked Aberdeen committing massacres in the process. Some of the force then marched on Fyvie where it was met by Scottish gvt troops led by Campbell of Argyll. Argyll was defeated but obviously the royalists suffered casualties too and retreated back to Aberdeen. You are right in that it is strange that a Jacobite obsessed 19thC Scotland would take an English song from the Jacobite period and transpose it back to the mid 17thC. |

On the other hand, what filtered back into oral tradition was a mighty fine song in the end. |

The original worlds evoke a folkloric world of hobgoblins and pilgrims. Very much a time in which science and magic overlap. A brilliant modern folk song is Steeleye Span's 'Montrose' it tells the tale of James Graham. A Scot and Charles's most competent general, a chivalric anachronism in his own time. |
