Does anyone have complete lyrics and/or more information about a World War One song about the shooting down of a Zeppelin airship while it was engaged in a bombing mission on the English East Coast city of Hull?
I came across reference to it in a book by Tom Jamison : Icarus Over The Humber The Last Flight of Airship R.38/ZR-2. On page 15 he talks about Zeppelin raids along the east coast during WW1 and says

'Typical of the times, an enterprising balladeer wrote new words to the popular tune Back Home in Tennesse to celebrate the downing of one Zeppelin. Printed on a postcard, it sold for 1d (One old penny). It commenced:

His home in Germany, that Zep will never see,
The British gunnery did bring it down you see.
All he could think about that night was setting
Hull alight........etc    '

Hi Geoff,
Yes I've seen this in the book and I have a collection of these WWI poetry postcards but mine all allude to army camps and the trenches. There is a good chance some may have survived. Have you tried all of the following? Postcard sellers online, Ebay.(Zeppelin), the exhibition down Whitefriargate, the people who put on the WWI exhibition at the Ferens recently( Susie Capes at Hull Museums)?

Thanks for coming to the concert on Saturday. Sorry I didn't get to chat with you both.

Steve

No German airships (commonly called Zeppelins) were shot down while raiding Hull. Only one was brought down over the North of England, L34 shot down over Hartlepool in November 1916 by 2nd Lt Pyott of 36 Squadron flying a BE2c.

Hull was not well supplied with anti-aircraft artillery either.

"No Zeppelins were ever shot down over Hull although many graphic eyewitness accounts exist. All refer to a single post-war accident when tens of thousands witnessed the R.38 explosion over the Humber in 1921."

Hertford was bombed by Zeppelin, and two were shot down nearby.
