The recording is also available from the Library of Congress: This is from the The John and Ruby Lomax 1939 Southern States Recording Trip. There are usually transcriptions available for these recordings - try here (click)

This is seven fox - a hunting song, learned from a Negro woman who "helped me when I was thataway"
This is the seven fox we have roused from the rocks
He is making for the water, we'll turn to my home
So I'll leave the fox alone
And rouse him early Monday morning, God knows.

I put my horn to my mouth, blowed West, East, North and South,
My hounds don't seem to hear me, but we'll return to my home
And goin' leave the old fox alone
And rouse him early Monday morning, God Knows.

I've looked and looked, Abby, and couldn't find anything related to this at all.

Um... seven fox?   like lucky 7?
And fox hunting songs.... English? maybe?

My great grandad was English and he used to hum it. So when I heard it in the Library of Congress I got excited. :) Thanks for looking about for me! This one's a tough one. I guess some just slip through the cracks.... -abby

Sounds like a slavery-escape reference to me…?
A quick online search finds that Josephine Baker had either a song or a band called Seven Fox Blues - results aren't clear. Any deepsouthians out there who can clarify this?

Lomax's notes say that Mrs. Griffin stated:
This is seven fox - a hunting song, learned from a Negro woman who "helped me when I was thataway"
so, slave reference is possible.   There is a seven fox grocery, seven fox clothing line, seven fox neighborhood, seven fox dry cleaners..... so it's prob. a reference to "something".
