Once, in a long ago lifetime, I saw pelicans plunge for fish next to a Navy destroyer; yes, they make a very "fearsome smack" indeed! I didn't get to see the moment when they picked up a fish, and hadn't thought about the stun factor, but it should have been obvious. |

Stopped on a bridge and there were loads of big trout in the deep hole below the bridge (that's how you build a bridge... with a deep hole to slow the water flow). The old man (RCAF instructor in such) dropped an M-36 in. They saw the bottom of the stream. They saw fish in the air, although they couldn't really tell the fish from the water on accounta the grenade blew everything to shit. Bro said he remembered Dad sayin, "Get in the fuckin car! Get in the fuckin car!" Then there's the story about blowin the beaver dam... Bro and Elgy (late teens) were told to go blow the dam on the road to the camp. When they got there, Bro asked how many sticks of TNT? Elgy says, "I guess all of em." Not good.... y had to fix the camp roof and it was a 1/4 of a mile away. |

It might also be possible to mix certain gas-producing chemicals in a well-sealed quart jar and cause it to explode underwater. I don't know this for sure, of course, and you'll have to figure it out for yourself |

When I was in my 'teens, he and I used to get up in the wee, small hours of the morning, drive up to Mukilteo (small town about thirty miles north of Seattle), rent a sixteen foot boat at Haynes' boat rental, and go in search of the wily salmon. Dad had a 10 hp. Johnson "Sea Horse" outboard motor which he would affix to the rental boat, and off we'd go for a day of fishing. On one occasion, we had been out for several hours with no luck. The outboard was about out of gas, so he turned it off to refuel it from a separate can of gasoline he had brought. As we sat there drifting with the tide, our fishing lines (which we had neglected to reel in prior to shutting the motor off) sank to the bottom. As we took off again, my pole bent severely and line started reeling out. Dad shut the engine off and opined that my line was probably fouled with seaweed. I started reeling it in, and met a lot of resistance. It took several minutes of reeling in line and lifting. There was something quite heavy on my line. When I had most of it reeled in, Dad looked over the side of the boat, shrank back, and said "Omigod!!" I peered over the side and saw, just a few feet under the surface, a huge open mouth equipped with a forest of teeth, and wide, staring eyes. It was a "We're gonna need a bigger boat!" moment! A ling cod! Bottom feeder who had pounce on my lure when it had sunk. We finally managed to horse it on board and Dad finished it off with a two-foot length of baseball bat he kept for the purpose. I've forgotten how much it weight, but it measure just an inch or two under five feet! Ling cod. Ling cod are real good eating, and we got quite a few meals out of that fish! On another occasion we were out fishing off the west side of Whidbey Island, and having no luck at all. Suddenly, tall, black dorsal fins surface all around us. Orca! Dozens of them! One of them "breached" (leapt out of the water not more than thirty feet away, rolled on its side revealing its white underbelly, and flopped back into the water. Our small boat (another sixteen footer) rocked severely. Orca breaching. Dad said, "Well, that does it for today. When those things show up, all the salmon head for the top of Mount Rainier!" Suddenly his reel started to run out, run out FAST. He grabbed and tried to reel it in, but couldn't. Whatever it was wasn't slowed for a moment -- it stripped every bit of line (125 feet, braided nylon) from the reel, ruined the brake and gears, and kept on going. There are some BIG suckers in them there rivers. More recently, my nephew was fishing in an old Missouri gravel pit with my brother and a friend. Nephew got a fish on and pulled it in -- a paddlefish weighing in (by the Rangers -- it was in a MO state park) at 67 pounds 3 oz. As it was still alive they let it go, and the only explanation anyone had was that it must have been trapped when the place was last flooded by the Mississippi. |

So they got some geneticists to combine the DNA of a Coho Salmon, a Walleye and a Muskie in the hopes of getting a real good fighting fish. Instead, they got a Kowalski. And they had to teach it to swim. |

I caught 4 big Arctic Char and 5 Rock Cod (the Rock Cod is another great story). Nain is 13 miles "inland" through channel islands. The tide head builds up and rushes in. So, I was standing on a boulder when the flat oily ca'm water washed over my boots. It was waves from very large "fish"... a dorsal fin about 8' out of the water about 100 yards away. Now, Orcas don't kill humans, according to the TV and whatnot but I was scared. I grabbed the fish, slung them over my back and turned to get back to shore. The boulders were covered with the tide water and the sun was glinting off them. I felt around with my fishing rod and managed to get "closer to shore" by jumping from boulder to boulder as I had done to get out as far as I did. Then, I lost my trail back and decided to swim the last 30' or so. I got to shore and scrambled up the rock beach. It was a good thing I decided to swim on accounta nobody back at the construction camp could tell I pissed my pants... from the cold water. >;-) Now... when I plopped the Rock Cod on Cooky's kitchen floor? Well, that is when things got REALLY scary! Cooky knew how to hurt a fellah with his broom whilst chasing him out of the kitchen with Rock Cod in tow! Apparently, Rock Cod are not to a Newf's liking. (Cooky was 73 and leather tough.) He did cook the char. I never got a bite of it! |

That was a hell of a trip. Flew 40 miles into Quebec on a Beaver. Stayed a day and a half at a log camp with the chinks missing. Had to smoke the camp to keep the skeeters out so we could sleep. SOBs took us there ILLEGALLY because they knew the PQ government had evacuated the area because of a forest fire. I had been close to forest fires before and I knew early the second day that we were in danger. When the pickup arrived, I had to swim out to the Beaver and latch a rope on to get the other guys out because the pilot couldn't get close enough to the "dock". Makes fer great stories but it wasn't fun at the time. Shoulda not even gotten on it when it arrived to pick us up at the start and ran into shore because the rudder cable was broken. Buddy says, "No problem, me zon, me zon. Me young fellah will be back from the 'ardware store with new cable roight quick like". The lad came back with clothesline wire. I nearly lost my life five times in Labrador... and I am not counting that fishing trip. That was just fun. Just another story. By gosh! Let's here some fishing stories! |

Some of his buddies convinced him to come snorkeling and shark hunting (with a powerhead -- a .45 caliber cartridge slammed against a shark by hand). So he did. Swimming out about 200 yards he jammed the powerhead against a shark about six feet long, tied onto the tail, and swam to shore with it. When he got to shore only the tail was left and the other sharks were swimming away. THAT was something he only did once. |

Caught em on a fifty dollar bill at the Coop grocery. Had to go out the back door on accounta the guy who sold em to me woulda been strung up fer sellin em to a mainlander if anyone saw me get them (Labrador is not considered "mainland" by most Newfs). |
