(as in 6 of the 7 above) In recent years, I've not met anyone playing regularly who isn't familiar with Ashokan Farewell. Happy waltzing to yez! I'm not Joanne, but here are three: Rosbif Waltz (French Canadian) Emma's Waltz (Finnish. Discussed here a few months ago) Farewell Marianne (Welsh) These ought to be easy to find on the web. In addition, I just learned a beautiful waltz called 'My Lady of the Lake.' This was given to my by the leader of the local English Country Dance troupe, and all I know about it is that it says "Traditional English" where the composer ought to be. It was so lovely that we almost melted when we played it. Let me know if you are interested, and we'll think of a way to transfer the music from me to you. |

My favorite version is by Laurie Hart and Paul Marchand on Cobbler's Dream where it follows Derriere Chez Nous (can't find a link). She describes it as a 3-beat bourree and it sounds like and uptempo waltz. Funny, I can't find a version by Chabenat. |

When I went searching for it, I couldn't find any notated music - just lists of it being danced at various ECD events, the choreography for the dance, and a number of videos of it being danced. The tune did indeed sound lovely, and when I traced back on one band's website, the tune for the DANCE My Lady of the Lake was a recently composed waltz by a woman on the west coast - sorry I don't remember the name. I saw the dance listed in both classes of "newer" dances being taught AND for a Playford Ball, yet couldn't find a tune in any ECD historical resources I have. Two different tunes? I remain flummoxed, frustrated and vastly curious. (A caller friend thought it was worth pursuing) SOoooooo Leenia, if you do find a way to send the dots out for this waltz PLEASE send 'em to me as well? I'd be glad to reciprocate with one of my favorites from a local composer. I can't locate a Charlene Thomson who composes music, however. Even though the music is being played by groups around the country, I wouldn't want to disseminate Charlene's composition without hearing from her. I'll post an Origins thread about the tune. I did think that it would be all right to send it merely to you, CupofTea, but the Mudcat won't let me sign in! First it says it never heard of me, then when I click 'Join,' it gives me the Login page. Meanwhile, I should be finishing the taxes. Sorry about all this. |

For a dance, we sometimes switch between the two, but our pianist loves Flowers of the Thorn, and we're more likely to play that for an end of the evening waltz- as we will Friday night. The first tune is one *I* love, and loved to dance to when I was able to dance. It was the very first tune I figured out how to play when I had my hands on my first (borrowed) concertina. Is the first one the tune Pat Shaw composed? It's not listed that way in Barnes, and he's good about credit-where-due stuff. If there's a third tune, I'd love to know that. This thread is making me greedy for more tunes. Leenia's other thread tracing Charlene Thomson for her compositions also fascinating. Hope something comes of that. If you can't PM me on Mudcat, I use the same handle on aol as here, so that should give you my email address w/out giving it to spambots. Margerita's Waltz ( Wim Poesen ) Josephina's Waltz ( Scandinavian "Christening" waltz by Roger Tallroth , I believe ). Vals voor Polle Rantzen AKA "Wim's Waltz ( Wim Poesen ) Patrick Bouffard's Waltz Tommy Bhetty's Waltz ( Tommy McGuire ? ) not easy to "pick" on guitar, but I have managed it (in dropped d )as the fingering is similar to The Trumpet Hornpipe ( Captain Pugwash !)!!
