04 Apr 15 - 07:24 PM (#3699682) Subject: Folklore: Any Musical Jams/Sessions in NC areas From: Claymore I am requesting information for the areas specifically around Winston-Salem, and the Outer Banks in North Carolina. I am well aware of some of the festivals around Ashville and Henderson, but I wish to take my grandson to any of the jams in the areas I mentioned. I live in Shepherdstown, WV. the Cultural Hub of the Western Hemisphere, and Navel of the Universe, so I can go to a local jam literally any night of the week, centered around any form of music from Irish to Old Time, Bluegrass to Country. I go down to W-S and the OB during the summer months and around Christmas, and would like if possible, to introduce him to jam/session etiquette, and the concept of playing with others in an informal group setting. I'd like to keep this to informational and not editorial material, so I'm looking for locations and times, with contact information if possible. My grandson is learning to play classical flute and guitar; I play banjo, guitar, autoharp, lute, and craviola, in any style from hombo to strathspey. A session in Winston-Salem would be good for most of the year, while any sessions in the Outer Banks area would good for the summer. My thanks in advance for any information on the above. |

Also, Swaims Grocery, in Winston-Salem 336-725-9696, and Gibb's Hundred Brewing Co. 336-763-7087 apparently host semi-regular old-time jams and the owners/managers could likely put you in touch with some one from the Piedmont Old-Time Society. Don't know if you are on Facebook or not - they do have a Facebook page but no direct contact information on it other than a link to request a link to their website. In the event you are not on facebook I went ahead and requested the link just now, and will send it to you if and when they send it to me. |

If anyone hasn't said it, Merlefest is pretty famous, and there's one coming up soon (April 23-26th), and there's the Yadkin Bluegrass Convention on April 18th. There's a couple--I know theyre not at the outerbanks region, but it's better to know. |

I have passed the info to my daughter and will follow up with a personal call or email as seems fit. I started to join Facebook right after I got out of the VA in 2012 but the fact I was away so long and I was having to learn to walk, cook, and care for myself and later to relearn to drive meant I just could not keep up, due to erratic typing skills. One of my best friends created some form of a website which he updated frequently, and saved my girlfriend and my family from constantly answering how I was doing. It was pretty close in the beginning as I had less than 5% chances in all 9 health indices, and it took me three weeks to come out of the coma. My family was told to be there by the second night if they wanted to say goodbye in person. I just lucked out. In any case I will follow up on the info above and let you folks know how it goes. This info is one of the things the Mudcat does best; putting people in touch with music, everywhere. Thanks again! |

11 Apr 15 - 12:55 AM (#3701143) Subject: RE: Any Musical Jams/Sessions in NC areas From: Claymore I did attend in 05 and would like to do so again, but I understand that the Getaway changed venues and thus I will have to see what the world holds for me as that festival comes around in the fall. I still play a fair amount of autoharp and banjo but I have also picked up a real strange guitar called a Craviola (nylon strung, guitar tuned) but with a body like it was designed by Dali. Held with the neck straight up, the bass side looks like a lute while the treble side looks like a cutaway parlor guitar. It is great fun to play, with unequal access to the treble stings while projecting plenty of bass. I shall see about the Getaway as it occurs. Thanks, Claymore |
