Who wrote this song

This is the first verse and chorus of a song I've known for a long, long time. But I've forgotten who wrote it.
I can't find it in the digitrad or forum.

Father always told me,
Fame don't mean a thing.
Folks forget so easy,
That bum was once a king.

That's the way of the world my son
Yes I know, yes I know, yes I know.

Cheers

I once saw David perform at a folk music club in Liverpool UK in the 1960s.
He was very impressive. Had the audience in the palm of his hand..as they say.

Cheers all.   That's the name I was looking for.
I didn't know he was Guyanese.    From the words of the song I presumed he was American.
