Blues singer banned - discrimination!

I was recently outraged and ashamed that a great blues singer and guitarist from our area has been denied access to a local public house.

The artist in question - a member of the Boots family of singers - was raised in the Adur delta area of Sussex (in the UK) and spent his formative years sharecropping on a smallholding on the banks of that river. As a child he tied chicken wire to the door handle of a barn and sang old roundelays while pulling and plucking on the wire. His father, recognising the boy's natural talent, bought him a cheap plywood guitar - and a legend was born. The boy grew into a gifted young man who used to practice his art while standing ankle deep in mud by the river band - getting himself the nickname of "Muddy" as he was always walking around the place with dirty shoes.

Over the years, he became famous in the Adur delta area and in localities further afield, but was not always treated well. Discrimination has always been present and haunts him right up until the present day.

Which was why I was saddened to see a notice pinned to the door of my local pub:

"PLEASE LEAVE MUDDY BOOTS OUTSIDE"

Outrageous!

Why outrageous? You are politely asked to leave him outside should he happen to accompany you. You'll probably start a fight in the pub if you come in with him...

So just let him enter the pub alone.

Could it be you're polishing off too many of those bottles, Will?

I woke up this moanin'
Blues all around my bed
Yes I woke up this moanin'
Blues runnin' 'round my head
Muddy Boots can't get in here
And neither can the Grateful Dead

That kind of discrimination is a dirty shame, Will.

Now I'm going to find out what a roundelay is.

A roundelay is something that was sung just as the tide was flowing

Try taking a Howling Wolf into a pub and see what sort of a reaction you get.

Come to think of it, I once saw Little Walter being refused service in a pub. They thought he was under age.

A "roundelay" comes from the French "ronde de lait" which, in colloquial English, means a milk round - which was what Muddy used to do to supplement his income...

Of course from time to time, Muddy would help his Italian cousin Concrete in his duties...

It has often been my pleasure to see Woody rambling round the creeks of the Adur Delta. He is easy to spot at a distance giving ample opportunity to nip off down a side road and avoid meeting him completely. His presence outside a pub is also useful warning that there are likely to be equally disreputable (if cleaner) characters inside.

Glad you've spotted Woody - but have you ever run into Muddy?

You were probably going to complain that Will was 8 days late with the original post....

Not run into Muddy but he once ran into me on his milk cart.
