I'm aware this is a cover but the tune sounds familiar, like a folk melody but could be me.

A jazz song first released in 1939 I remember dad had the Harry James orchestra playing it. I can't detect any folk tune in it but other than Scottish music dad didn't do much folk, his band played Scottish and big band stuff right through the war up till the late sixties. Sorry can't be more help.

I don't recognize it as a folk tune, but thanks for posting. It's a good tune.

The page you linked, Runrig Fan, led me to a version by Ella Fitzgerald. I'm struck by the differences between the present-day video and the old one. The video of the present day features unhealthy-looking young people looking creepy while being vaguely threatening.

The old one simply shows Ella's face, looking charming. I won't get started on the horrors that the people of 1939 were facing.

Makes one wonder, don't it?

For the record, Wikipedia informs -

"T'ain't What You Do (It's the Way That You Do It)" is a song written by jazz musicians Melvin "Sy" Oliver and James "Trummy" Young. It was first recorded in 1939 by Jimmie Lunceford, Harry James, and Ella Fitzgerald

Odd that a typo in thread title should recall the late-lamented Princess of Wales.

Can't say I find the tune redolent of any particular folk air.

I'm struck by the differences between the present-day video and the old one.

The link isn't to a present-day video. The Fun Boys Three/Bananarama version was released more than 30 years ago and the video has that distinct '80s look. A present-day video would have scantily clad girls cavorting round and would be closer to soft porn.

Also, the Ella Fitzgerald version is an audio track rather than a video and whoever uploaded it has chosen a, presumably, unrelated still photo to give the listener something to look at. It doesn't really reflect 1939 values.

Show me 1939 advertising art with adolescents looking like corpses.
