Tech: GarageBand keeps quitting

Any Mac users can help, please? Every time I try to "share to iTunes", Garageband "quits unexpectedly". Very long error message which is all gobbledegook to me, and says report sent to Apple. Not happened before, but happened 5 times in a row last night, so I have still not successfully transfered the track to iTunes. Tried re-booting the computer, but still same results. The only good thing is that the Garageband track is still saved and the work not lost. Tried trawling the Apple forums, but not a lot of help. Any ideas, you clever people? (Pref in simple language, please!)

Have you downloaded the latest version? Both OSX and iOS have had a new update in the last few days.

I can do it on both iPad and iMac. iTunes has an update too, as do both operating systems. A recipe for disaster! Luckily I'm ok so can't help I'm afraid.

I don't know much about this, but what if you saved your file to a CD or thumb drive and then put it on iTunes from there? Inconvenient, but if something in the Garageband program had interfered with the transfer, then Garageband would not longer be involved. Maybe.

Hi Musket, I've checked for any updates available and none are showing: they usually DO show up in Apps or other alerts if there are any to be downloaded: but I'll check again. Will re-try later with a different file in case it just didn't like that particular track! I have recently updated iTunes. BUT
Well whaddaya know......just as I was typing this, an alert appeared on Apps, and guess what? One for OSX and one for Garageband - tho' the latter is more for drumming loops and hip-hop stuff - not my scene! But if I'm lucky there'll be some bug fixes too!

Leeneia, I use Garageband for uploading my own recordings from H4 Zoom and then edit starts and finishes so that I don't get any unwanted stuff before and after the actual tune: can also cut/copy/paste/rejoin (remove the bad bits!), which I don't think is possible on iTunes.

But thanks to both of you: will let you know once i've installed the updates!

Hallelujah! All working again after downloading and installing the updates - which were not there last night! They must take longer to reach Scotland! Tx again.

Congratulations. The good guy (you) prevails once more, even if it takes a little while.

Yes, got all the edits to 17 tracks done last night, converted to iTunes, sent to bandmates and CD burned!

Are you kidding me? I'm using this in March 2016 and it's still not fixed!

Guest 13 Jul 17 - I think Garageband can only handle one mic input at a time unless you incorporate your sources into what's called an aggregate device.

I found this article by Adam Weiss which may help - good luck!

Audio Midi Setup

I've been asked a number of times about this, and the answer is quite simple — though frustratingly hard to find.

The way to do it is through an application with the confusing name of Audio MIDI Setup (found in your Mac's Applications ? Utilities folder). This program can be used to combine any audio inputs on your computer into one "Super Input" (called an Aggregate Device be Apple) that can be used in any program.

The cool thing about this is that you can assign these inputs to be different channels of the Aggregate Device, so you still get the same control in Garageband that you would with a full set of inputs on a device like a firewire mixer. You can also use this Aggregate Device in iChat or Skype for multi-way chat — just select it as the audio input in the program's preferences.

Here are the specific directions from the Audio MIDI Setup help file:

To combine audio devices:

Open Audio Midi Setup in the Applications/Utilities folder.
Choose Audio > Open Aggregate Device Editor.
In the editor window, click the Add (+) button to create an aggregate device. You can select the device and rename it.
In the Aggregate Device Structure list, click the Use checkbox of each device you want to include in the aggregate device. The list shows the currently connected audio devices and the number of input and output channels for each.
To set the clock of one device as the master clock for all the combined devices, click the Clock radio button beside the device name.
After selecting the devices you want combined, click Done.
There are some more options to play around with in the program, but that should get you headed in the right direction.

Hmmmm thats sounds like really useful info Freddie. I'll certainly keep that in mind when fiddling around with Mac audio stuff.

Just wondering though if folks are having issues with Macs if it might be possible for folks to include info on what version of OSX is being used and what version of applications like Garageband etc? There are OS issues around out there and especially with some of the later OS upgrades.

Cheers,

Andrez
