However, if I stop it in order to play something else, and then try to go back to it by cliccking on the file, I get: "Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have permissions to access the item." DVDs don't appear to have this problem. Ideas apprecitated. Thank you, Ed Windows 7, Admin login |

Is this a commercial audio CD (CDA) or a CDROM with audio files on it? Is this a particular CD or any CD? If it's a CDROM are you comparing it with a DVDROM or a commercial DVD? Did it start playing automatically or did you click something? |

21 Aug 15 - 05:45 AM (#3732020) Subject: RE: Tech: Trouble playing a CD on a laptop From: GUEST,JHW I have a very good Arcam CD deck which will play any CD start to finish but is fussy about finding a particular place on CDs with masses of tracks and indeed can never find a track on a recorded rather than pressed CD (or similarly go back to where it was as you are trying). Just puts up 'Error' which is much as your Windows message is saying. On my Arcam its just the vintage of the machine that never envisaged later technology. |

The original CDs - CDDA (not CDA as I wrote above) or 'Red Book' CDs - and CD ROMs. CDROMs are computer file systems, like hard disks. CDDAs are not, and don't contain 'files', though operating systems often present the tracks as if they are. There are also several types of CD which are both - 'extended CDs' - which are not (or shouldn't be) labelled 'Compact Disc Digital Audio' (but sometimes are) and contain both at once, or are non-standard - e.g. they include track names. Some of them used to include deliberate flaws to inhibit copying by computers. Sony famously once included malware on theirs. Early CD players only played CDDAs. Later ones would play some audio files on CDROMs too. I have some 'extended' CDs which won't play in my older CD players. I've noticed that most CDs I buy don't say whether they're CDDA - so I assume they're some sort of extended format. What a computer operating system or a media player might make of some of these hybrid CDs could be quite variable. In Linux I can imagine it might start playing the CDDA part under one user - 'nobody' - but not give another user the permission to read the filesystem part. But I'm just guessing. |
