On now.
First chosen "Fields of Athenry"
Lots of discussion.

It is certainly a great Irish song. I know you mudcatters like to scoff but you are a miserable minority.

I love the song.

That's not how I remember the programme, Keith.
FoA was certainly included, but many more, of all stripes, were discussed and selected before and after.

The first song was actually Maggie Barry singing "She moved through the fair"!

Good to hear fellow mudcatter Liberty Boy talking about the sean nós tradition and providing examples.

Worth another listen.

The link below takes you to a page where as well as listening again (for those allowed to) you can hear the 20-odd songs included in the programme. Excellent!

It was just a quick post so others could listen Noreen.
Not intended as a summary.
Did they suggest the Gaelic version of Walk Through the Fair be entered?
Thanks for the link.
I will listen again.

I don't think everyone will understand the reference R4 which I suppose is BBC radio 4 (UK)

The title of this thread was "R4 Gt. Irish Songbook." I changed the title to BBC Radio 4 Great Irish Songbook, but I do wonder why the thread title couldn't be clear in the first place.

Quite often here, Mudcatters from the British Isles criticize our American desire for clarity as cultural illiteracy. But from our side of the pond, it seems like all you people talk in code. C'mon, give us a break and talk English, willya?

The program(me) is available in the US at this link (click). I just heard a clip from Jerry O'Reilly (Liberty Boy). I'm sorry I missed meeting him last time I was in Ireland, but I got lost...in the rain....and all those young people were vomiting on the streets of Dublin because it was a Friday....

I am sorry.
I posted in haste, and did not think it could be accessed outside UK.
I will do better next time.

The programme was recorded early in July and was first broadcast on July 27th (I think!). Yes, sorry not to have met you last time in Dublin Joe, next time perhaps?
